Beaton threshold on kicking, stamping and the rest

1148

We deservedly lost at Ibrox on Saturday, so it would have been inappropriate to apportion any responsibility towards referee John Beaton, for the free reign Newco player Alfredo Morelos had to kick Scott Brown, stamp on Anthony Ralston and assault the genitals of Ryan Christie during the game.

These things occasionally happen in football (although seldom in such quantities) and are picked up by the SFA review process.  What is exceptional about these circumstances is that the review process is unable to act as the referee claims to have witnessed each incident and determined no action was worthy of a caution or more.

Beaton will have mitigated his decisions with some or other explanation, perhaps with “It wasn’t that bad a stamp” type comment.  This is how the process works.  The system is rightly designed to protect referees and allow them latitude to make decisions, including the occasional mistake.

It is not always easy to view common assault for what it is, in fact, it is easy to get carried away with an occasion and raise your threshold for such matters.  It is only human to be affected this way.  But this is bad refereeing.

Beaton could have taken the easy route out and claimed he missed one or more of the incidents, each was off the ball, after all.  That would have allowed the review panel to dispassionately decide if such attacks are to be prohibited, or encouraged, in our game.  Instead, he affirmed that in his view, there was nothing in Morelos behaviour worthy of a caution.

I have no idea what Dedryck Boyata said to earn his red card from John Beaton against St Johnstone earlier this season but I defended the referee’s decision that day.  You have to trust match officials to competently carry out their duties.  Do I still trust John Beaton’s views on kicking players, stamping, genital punching and the like?  No.  His views and significantly out of line with mine.

I don’t see a conspiracy in what happened this week, just a referee who was not up to the job.  A good referee would have cautioned Morelos for the first incident (kick on Brown).  This may have prevented the more serious attacks on Ralston and Christie, but the Newco player was not even spoken to after any of the incidents.

These are not easy games to officiate but this was not a game full of controversy or incident, only one player and one referee lost the plot.

Acres of empty seat at Celtic park looks like apathy, not a protest. Why punish Celtic?

    ————————————————————————————————————————–

The likely attendance at that match will be every low due in part to the timing of the game, the standard of the opposition and this will be portrayed as apathy in any event. However, a near empty stadium will be regarded as a tangible sign that our supporters are no longer prepared to sit at the back of the bus.

It will also send a message to other clubs that if we can boycott a match at CP then we can do the same at their middens. In addition, their corporate sponsors and TV broadcasters won’t be too happy with half-empty away grounds when we play. Finally, it will also send a message to our own board who I feel were forced to make the statement because of the fans fury.

We have want they want and it’s called the green pound. The longer we keep it in our wallets, the greater the chance we will see real action being taken as the club’s statement has to be backed up with positive action.

If we keep on paying then they keep on cheating.

  5. THE BIG QUESTION: WHY WAS McKENNA PUNISHED WHILE MORELOS ESCAPED?

I have just read this article and only 3 Morales incidents are mentioned, when there were actually 4, this being the forearm smash on Ryan Christie which was possibly the worst of the lot. The video had been put up here a couple of days ago but when I went to view it again yesterday it had been removed due to copyright issues, strange huh?

I’ve been banging that drum for days, when the media etc all started talking about 3 incidents, I suspected he would be let off.

The most obvious red card is the incident you mention and, of course, that was the one that it looks like Beaton didn’t see, so he couldn’t use the get out clause, that was used for the other 3 incidents.

At least 4 other member clubs have issued statements about refs this year, nothing said about it. Gerrard in his first league game, at Pittodrie, called out the refs, nothing.

  9. Maxwell can get stuffed with his respect appeal, when as it has been shown and for which there is evidence that his organisation and its contractors in the form of referees and office bearers have many questions over their judgement and conduct to answer and for years, I appeal to Celtic and all interested clubs and fans to demand that this smokescreen about beaton is not allowed to stop this process, and that investigations must take place by an outside agency, cheats cannot be allowed to win

Well all 3 Celtic deals appear to be very near completion so you worriers can relax as we move on to other players. In my opinion we will get a minimum of another two in before the window closes a centre back and a right back. H.H.

    The consensus was .

    He is going to Besiktas.

That he was a tough defender.

He has played 1 match for them this season ,despite being fit for selection.

He is not a good enough footballer to play for PSV.

I don’t know if there was any truth in the rumour ,but it would appear the guy is not that good.

  23. Praise for Lennybhoy of this parish.

I saw the other day a poster saying that they did not trust the MSM or the internet sources with regards to transfer stories.

That they would prefer to trust in the posts from Lennybhoy and another poster.

I don’t know the other poster ,but I do know Lennybhoy.

He is one of the finest human beings to don a Celtic scarf.

A Celtic supporter ,who attends the matches.

    Not just a Celtic fan,but a supporter.

He lives out the charitable ethos of Celtic also.

    A 10 out of 10 Bhoy.

I have communicated directly with Lennybhoy my views on his previous inside knowledge of Celtics transfer actions.

His source is either very poor or taking info from the likes of Celtic News Now and passing it on.

For 4 transfer windows Lennybhoy was communicating transfer news that was already in the public domain via the web news agencies and click bait sites.

The success rate of his posts was no higher that the click bait sites.

Therefore his source could claim some success ,but most of the tips never happened.

I suggested after the last window that he should not trust his source as being credible.

I’m delighted to see that he isn’t being fooled this window .

    Well done Lennybhoy.

” Weah, son of Liberian legend George, is on his way to Dubai to catch up with his new team-mates after his club agreed another temporary transfer for one of their hottest prospects – but this time there will be no “right-to-buy” clause in his six-month contract.”

    We didn’t get it .

Therefore the money from player sales is needed to offset losses.”

We had £40m in the bank before we sold Dembele. We had a net transfer spend of zero last year before we sold Dembele. We then received a further £20m for the sale of Dembele.

When we have money in the bank, we can’t spend it because it is being saved up for a rainy day. When the rainy day arrives we sell players in any event, in addition to hoarding the huge cash reserves we have. It makes you wonder, what is the point of having all this cash if we refuse to spend it come what may?

Our failure to invest in the team will invariably lead to more rainy days; we are talking about being in a title race this year, nevermind the challenge of qualifying for the CL next year. We had the opportunity to make 3 CL group stages in a row with a little bit of investment- we failed to do it.

Time and again, our short sightedness backfires. Even now we are talking about making 3 signings, two of whom will be gone by summer. It’s patch work on top of patch work.
