Beaton threshold on kicking, stamping and the rest

1148

We deservedly lost at Ibrox on Saturday, so it would have been inappropriate to apportion any responsibility towards referee John Beaton, for the free reign Newco player Alfredo Morelos had to kick Scott Brown, stamp on Anthony Ralston and assault the genitals of Ryan Christie during the game.

These things occasionally happen in football (although seldom in such quantities) and are picked up by the SFA review process.  What is exceptional about these circumstances is that the review process is unable to act as the referee claims to have witnessed each incident and determined no action was worthy of a caution or more.

Beaton will have mitigated his decisions with some or other explanation, perhaps with “It wasn’t that bad a stamp” type comment.  This is how the process works.  The system is rightly designed to protect referees and allow them latitude to make decisions, including the occasional mistake.

It is not always easy to view common assault for what it is, in fact, it is easy to get carried away with an occasion and raise your threshold for such matters.  It is only human to be affected this way.  But this is bad refereeing.

Beaton could have taken the easy route out and claimed he missed one or more of the incidents, each was off the ball, after all.  That would have allowed the review panel to dispassionately decide if such attacks are to be prohibited, or encouraged, in our game.  Instead, he affirmed that in his view, there was nothing in Morelos behaviour worthy of a caution.

I have no idea what Dedryck Boyata said to earn his red card from John Beaton against St Johnstone earlier this season but I defended the referee’s decision that day.  You have to trust match officials to competently carry out their duties.  Do I still trust John Beaton’s views on kicking players, stamping, genital punching and the like?  No.  His views and significantly out of line with mine.

I don’t see a conspiracy in what happened this week, just a referee who was not up to the job.  A good referee would have cautioned Morelos for the first incident (kick on Brown).  This may have prevented the more serious attacks on Ralston and Christie, but the Newco player was not even spoken to after any of the incidents.

These are not easy games to officiate but this was not a game full of controversy or incident, only one player and one referee lost the plot.

In the interests of accuracy i believe Armstrong was sold for circa 7 million and The sell on clause for VVD netted somewhere around 6 million.

That would mean the club was 28 million up.

  2. CELTIC40ME @ 1:41 PM,

Well as I’m not an accountant I tend to go with Paul67s leaders as to our fiscal policy. Of course insight by fholk like TBB and BRT&H are also illuminating but these insights are few and far between these days and things move on.

So I’ll bow to your greater knowledge.

My point was though that for many Seasons we have made a profit on player sales and have had European Football often after New Year…

This hasn’t lead to greater overall spend in the transfer market, in fact during the success in the transfer market and UCL during Lenny’s tenure he wasn’t backed. To the point that he couldn’t even offer Gary Hooper the contract he wanted to, to entice him to stay.

This has been the situation season after season…

We get in dozens of Mo Banguras, Amido Baldes and waste transfer budget and resources…

We get in Guidettis and Denayers by the score…

When we get a quality player in and they gain intrinsic value… Wanyama, VvD, Dembele… We sell them as soon as.

That is why we have been unable to build a Celtic squad worthy of the name since Rangers died.

    TINYTIM @ 1:40 PM,

Well yes, I’m sure one, two or three of them will go in the Summer anyway… even if we are correct and we don’t spend big.

Surely in this window we should be spending the Dembele money and not the Kieran Tierney money… one for BSR;)

We have tried to bring in the ex superstars during Strachan and Mowbray’s time with little success, I wouldn’t like to see us go back there.

Although I must admit, with Sevco in the position they’re in they are making some sensible signings. I can see them dropping a lot less points this half of the season… they are preparing to succeed…

Broonie, what can you say, unless he takes that pay cut… thank you, you are a Legend, hope you have a golden Indian summer in Oz… (I’d prefer this scenario in any event)

    Hail Hail

  3. If we sign Weah and Bayo plus the addition of Burke it would suggest that Brendan has recognized the need for pace in our slow tempo team.

Excited at the prospect of the flying Celts.

  4. FAN-A-TIC @ 2:32 PM,

  6. My understanding of accounts is poor so i would like someone to explain this to me. we qualified for the c/l group stages for 2 years and manage to build up income to 40 million (before sale of dembele).

We failed to qualified for c/l this season so will now make huge loss… so how were we able to build up 40 million in the first place?

we did not qualify for c/l group so i suspect bonuses to manager and staff will be much lower and will fall in like with e/l bonuses. celtic have still made a lot of money from this and seem to manage the bioks just fine.

Would be delighted to see a first choice rightback and centreback signed up this windiw. If we do sign boyo, we will have eduard and griffith too.. More than enough so have no problem with short term loans to cover us in the meantime.

  7. GlassTwoThirdsFull on

Maybe over-analysing this but two six month loans and a Kolo Toure signing gives a whiff of a “Brendan’s for the off” window. Anyway, hope I’m wrong and still 25 days to go so let’s see how things look at the end of the month.

  8. CHAIRBHOY

I can’t see any evidence of it being a fact.Sterling at Liverpool and Sinclair at Swansea and us in his first season for sure.

But in this and last season pace has been notably absent.

Maybe the new guys will face in a forward direction :-)

  9. hi ghuys, looks like its gonna be loan deals and the odd player we buy from now on, as you know im from the lions era, when we bought, joe McBride/willie Wallace/harry hood/dixie deans etc. but life does move on I suppose.hh.

  10. All the Financial wizards here who hand pick a few sales & advise us that there is 20/30/40 or 50 million just sitting in the Bank.

Why not do the simple thing & look up the last audited accounts & you will get the exact figures. For those who say the audited Accounts are massaged, that is bull shit. Celtic is a PLC the standard set for the production & approval of Accounts is of the highest degree. We make money on headline sales but there are deductions & fees, agents & players get a cut, none of us know the exact details. Whilst we make big money on one player we lose money on others & month after month we have a huge salary pay out.

Burke & Weah Freebies, they are in my arse, they will come with loan fees & wages.

We are in a strong Financial position Thank God & long may it remain so.

The Huns are gambling big time to win this League, if they fail they will be in trouble for years, Even at this stage I wouldn’t rule out them selling El Buffalo this window to try & keep the lights on.

I believe they are capable of giving us a genuine fight for this years Title but equally I believe that we will win the 8th in a row.

  11. CORKCELT on 6TH JANUARY 2019 2:58 PM

So you think that the accounts cant be massaged, ever heard of deferred payments ect… Good way to put money owed out of sight for business for years at a time.

I have no doubt celtic have 40 million or So in the bank. Does not mean celtic dont need to balance books. 7 players are out of contract this summer or about 5 million a years wages, clearly it makes sense to allow these players to leave before adding to it.

Ps if celtic was bringing in a couple of free transfers from spl clubs and a 34 and 36 years old we would be going mental.

Playing at pace is more than just about having pacy players. We have played quickly in some games this season and got good results.

Where we struggle is when teams defend deep and in numbers. Then it is more about moving the ball quickly. McGregor playing deeper helps to get it forward quicker, but sometimes it slows down again in the final 25 yards.

Here it is all about fast movement, combination plays, overloads, dummy runs, anything to try to open up the defence and create gaps. Roberts could do this. Would beat a player, another would leave his position to close him down. Bingo – two defenders out of the game and space for a striker or midfield runner.

Hopefully they new guys can do this. Would like a new right back who can get forward more. Too many of our attacks come down the left.

  16. One nondescript statement from the club and the media are going berserk, they are doing the clubs work for them, by trying to discredit us they are highlighting the corruption to what hopefully results in a strike.

To those who advocate the club keep their powder dry and shouldn’t be making statements, this is the power we have, we could destroy the game if we wished, we now need to keep up the pressure if we really want reform, or else we should just hand over the trophies and walk away.

  17. Steph Bhoy if there are deferred payments they are listed and any Accountant worth his salt knows exactly how the Company stands. By the way at jLast Accounts ,Cash Figure Net of Bank Borrowing was 36.1 million.

Movement off the ball allows variation of pace and passing. We are not so good at this but hopefully the new guys are.

Also the body position when receiving passes can make a huge difference in options available to player.

JF and SS are two prime examples whose body positions often reduce options and nullify their own pace.

Instead of constantly facing backwards and as someone suggested the other day after watching a good passing team if they just put their back to the touchline they would have a 180 degree of field rather than the limited view they generally have now.

Our best performance in my opinion was 6-0 away at St Johnstone when Ed played left and JF right with Griff up top.We had lots of interchangeable movement and JF and Ed constantly attacked the space Griff created by dragging defenders out of position.JF since the international break has resumed to hiding and facing backwards to return ball where it came from.Time coach had a word and showed him footage of that game where he scored 4.

We play with a passive body language and it’s time to get on the front foot

“Compper, Hendry, Hayes, Gamboa, DDV, there’s £5M investment gone in front of your eyes, sell Moussa Dembele and the Club comes out £15,000,000 up. The investment is there, its just that some chose not to see it, and prefer fag packet economics…”

Except the players you mention were all purchased in the financial year(s) prior to Moussa being sold, so the fees paid for them were built into the accounts already. The club had a net spend of zero prior to Moussa being sold.

Also, I think experience has now taught us that buying £1m players is not worth it; it’s a waste of a transfer fee and wages. Fewer, more expensive signings have to be the way to go.

Last accounts did not include dembele money and i am sure did not include all money gained from ddv or amstrong sale due to deferred payments. Might actually have been myself! I have been noticing how Sterling and Sane at Man City play. Always tight on the touchline and with backs to stands.

They face the same sort of problems as us, but move the ball so much quicker in the final 25 yards. I know they have better players but I think we could do better.

Agree about the St Johnstone game.

Also, I think we could use our quick players better in European games (where we have less of the ball) by playing more of a counter-attacking game. Instead of an isolated one up front, play a front three who start deeper but break as a three so there are more options when we are in the opponents half.

“We are in a strong Financial position Thank God & long may it remain so.”

We are indeed, but only because we invested in a fantastic manager in BR on the orders of DD (thank god for that bigot, Gilligan, abusing DD at the semi-final; where would we be without him?).

Our strong financial position could wither and dissipate as quickly as the seasons change if we do not keep investment up.

Case and point, within the period of two (financial) years we have gone from have a turnover of £52m, what would have been a loss of £5m but for player sales and net cash at the bank of £3.6m to a turnover of £101.6m, a profit of £17.3m (without significant depletion of the first team) and net cash at the bank of £36.1m; we have also won every domestic trophy.

Now, for some reason we seem to be stalling on investment and the team has been regressing. We need to arrest this trend as otherwise we may find ourselves back in the position we were so recently in.

There’s no argument especially with fag packet stuff, we’re millions up and we’re all waiting on significant spend, the same as most were last summer, its all a question degrees and amounts of investment which vary between supporters.

It won’t be in a January market because very few in the price range the supporter thinks we are in, change clubs mid season, and the consequence is loan, and punt.

We now allegedly have a manager with one eye on his exit door, meaning he’s even less likely to be handed a blank cheque after Christmas for 9 and beyond, assuming we do 8.

BR to kind to him, hasn’t spent particularly well and if we don’t shop from the more expensive market, we’re in a mud fight with Sevco as the Ibrokes result proved.
