Beaton threshold on kicking, stamping and the rest

We deservedly lost at Ibrox on Saturday, so it would have been inappropriate to apportion any responsibility towards referee John Beaton, for the free reign Newco player Alfredo Morelos had to kick Scott Brown, stamp on Anthony Ralston and assault the genitals of Ryan Christie during the game.

These things occasionally happen in football (although seldom in such quantities) and are picked up by the SFA review process.  What is exceptional about these circumstances is that the review process is unable to act as the referee claims to have witnessed each incident and determined no action was worthy of a caution or more.

Beaton will have mitigated his decisions with some or other explanation, perhaps with “It wasn’t that bad a stamp” type comment.  This is how the process works.  The system is rightly designed to protect referees and allow them latitude to make decisions, including the occasional mistake.

It is not always easy to view common assault for what it is, in fact, it is easy to get carried away with an occasion and raise your threshold for such matters.  It is only human to be affected this way.  But this is bad refereeing.

Beaton could have taken the easy route out and claimed he missed one or more of the incidents, each was off the ball, after all.  That would have allowed the review panel to dispassionately decide if such attacks are to be prohibited, or encouraged, in our game.  Instead, he affirmed that in his view, there was nothing in Morelos behaviour worthy of a caution.

I have no idea what Dedryck Boyata said to earn his red card from John Beaton against St Johnstone earlier this season but I defended the referee’s decision that day.  You have to trust match officials to competently carry out their duties.  Do I still trust John Beaton’s views on kicking players, stamping, genital punching and the like?  No.  His views and significantly out of line with mine.

I don’t see a conspiracy in what happened this week, just a referee who was not up to the job.  A good referee would have cautioned Morelos for the first incident (kick on Brown).  This may have prevented the more serious attacks on Ralston and Christie, but the Newco player was not even spoken to after any of the incidents.

These are not easy games to officiate but this was not a game full of controversy or incident, only one player and one referee lost the plot.

  1. Celtic40Me – Football without fans is nothing. A blog without readers likewise. Many years ago, when Paul began the blog, we flocked to it. His opinions were interesting and often inspired debate. Debate he used to hang about for half-an-hour or so to participate in.

I imagine the number of people using the site has dropped considerably since its heyday. Probably for a variety of reasons including the ads and now the alignment of the editorial content to never criticize the board (the manager was fair game to Paul earlier in the year though).

Does anyone know if Paul regularly reads the comments anymore? Some of you guys must know him – has he nothing to say about the demise of the blog’s usability? Is it now more a commercial venture for him than a labour of love?

His comments on Beaton are so out of touch with every fan I know it defies belief.

What a stark contrast to a year or so ago when he brazenly questioned the suitability of a ref for a game against Sevco for his gambling problem. A claim he never backed up or expanded on mind you.

It begs the question what you’re doing on here then. Maybe I’m a big old-fashioned but your post strikes me as a little bit rude and disrespectful.

What am i doing on here then?

What are you looking for? A mobile version of the Celtic View? Because that is exactly what you’ve got.Blogs like this were set up to give fans a voice, and alternative views to create a talking shop. The lead articles on here during contentious times, like now, either ignore the main issue of the day,or we are drop fed the party line a few days after, like today’s nonsense.I will continue to contribute, but not sure for how much longer ,if that’s ok with you?

    Roome and Madden are friends.

They played football together at u/21s.

Of course, you are right about finding 4 Celtic minded officials, indeed can you imagine Willie Collum going for a pint in The Brazen Head after refereeing a Glasgow Derby which Celtic won, the press, SFA, Secvco and their fans would demand that he was sine die.

    Hail Hail

  7. Don’t want to make any wild accusations, Paul67, about yourself being a mouthpiece for a Celtic Board, who won’t stand up for the team or the support. I do, however, wonder how you can really defend your article today.

To me, it was obvious from the moment that the 4 officials were nominated, that, by hook or by crook, we were not going to be allowed to get anything from that game.

Imo, the SFA are conniving to make sure the deid team win this league. Most of the other clubs seem to have acquiesed in this. The only person I have been aware of who has raised any questions on the cheating is Levein.

How Beaton is not being held accountable for his “incompetence” and why Celtic have not demanded he be sanctioned sickens me.

We have NOT been paranoid enough.

  8. While I don’t agree with Pauls main article I`ll get over it.Surely a blog is about differing opinions and being tolerant of them.I prefer this to some sort of fanzine were everybody is singing from the same hymnsheet.Remember anyone flouncing the wearing of the pink tutu is obligatory.

I’m not sure that’s why Paul set up CQN, but I wouldn’t presume to know for sure

I wouldn’t tell you what you can post and when, I’m not sure why you think it’s ok to be so rude about Paul posting his own opinions on his own blog.

I’ve been reading CQN long enough to know, for sure, his opinions are his own, and the approach he takes to all things Celtic is unique, measured, considered and informed. I know this makes him unpopular, but if he listened to what everyone was telling him in the comments section we’d end up with a poorer place

I include myself in this – It’s starting to feel a lot like August !!!!!!!

Back then I convinced myself PL had everything under control and the reinforcements were on the way

If we are to believe reports today PL is at it again penny pinching with the club in Slovakia

I have no idea if Bayo is the answer or not – but if we offer £1.75m (as reported) and it’s turned down

If we want him then give them the £2m now

For 250k it gets him in early and it stops any potential bidding war

But sadly I fear PL will deliberate, stall then fall

    Why ??

I do not know but will give a couple of views next

All bought cheaply all sold for good profit

This brought good cheer to PL

I think (but not sure) all of the above came via John Park (I know he also had some horror stories)

But PL trusted him (as far as PL trusts anyone)

Since then (Dembele apart) and I’m not sure if Park had anything to do with Dembele we have not created that buy cheap sell for a fortune player

Now there is probably someone I have missed but I hope you get my point

Since BR arrived one or two of our buys have not worked out

I hope PL as not lost faith in BR and as such is stalling on buying players

Does PL miss John Park ??

Or am I just full of Paranoia

    Any help welcome

We have had hotels , helping a club in Ireland through some partnership arrangement, a club website that if it is not trying to sell you something it wants money from your pay packet for the Foundation, someone in there is ripping the goodwill out of the support, it will have consequences and soon.

Spend money on the first team squad now, on experienced quality, if nothing happens this window Rodgers is off or he has already told the board he is off and they wont spend anything other than loans.

This 3.5 million set aside for onerous contracts starts to make sense.

  21. I am finding it increasingly difficult to give Celtic plc the benefit of the doubt.

I have long held the view that if I don`t KNOW enough about something then I would be unlikely to comment upon it. Simultaneously, I have allowed for the possibility that there may well be a good reason why Celtic plc have to keep quiet about various and obvious biases against Celtic and in favour of Sevco.

Unlike many on here, I am happy with my team`s performance on the park and can accept the occasional, if fair ,defeat. I am less than happy with the Club`s communication with its supporters.

I have occasionally contacted John Paul Taylor —the Club`s Supporter Liaison Officer–and he has responded reasonably well. In some cases he has, at my request, forwarded my email to ` The Board`. I have never had a response from said body. That lack of connect with the support may well lead to a groundswell of protest that Establishment Scotland would love whilst we, the protesters ,would detest doing what we would feel we had been driven to undertake.

Beaton`s astonishing performance, followed by his seeming willingness to be seen on Social Media drinking with his fellow Sevco fans after the game, may well lead to something positive from an organised Celtic Support. That, my fellow supporters, is the big problem. Is there anyone on here who can take up that mantle and create a body of support that has enough clout to ensure The Board fights on our behalf?

I know I don`t have the energy for such a fight but I would certainly join anyone who put him/herself forward.

Its P67’s blog so he posts what he likes and rightly so, he gave us a portal to vent, unfortunately it seems that certain pieces are straight from the PLC book of tricks.

I can see the logic in the CB issue being the main resolution, especially if whoever they are, were of the same quality as Benkovic and not the Jack Hendry types (god forbid if its Scott McKenna) todays article reeks of PLC collusion in having the great unwashed competing.

Day 4 of the transfer window doesnt have me panicking, signings of Defoe and Davies doesnt either (though i think they’re the wrong side of decent but still good additions), bosmans of Jones and Kamara doesnt either, in fact no one that they buy has me quaking.

Celtic’s transfer policy and dealings however, scare the life out of me. we’ve seen how this pans out so many times and despite our hope that BR has taken some control over the process i fear, and rightly so, that PL will contrive to mess this up again, its on his watch again and if he thinks he’ll get away with it, then he is sadly wrong, as is our host. My barometer for this? I even agreed with Ernie (thats a few times now)

Letter sent to Ian Maxwell regards latest.

    Postby Joe O’Rourke » Fri Jan 04, 2019 12:05 pm

Below is a letter sent today to Ian Maxwell with regards to the latest shenanigans from the SFA. it’s really getting to the stage when we must ask ourselves how long we can put up with the cheating within Scottish Football, all for the benefit of one club to the detriment of all the rest.

    Mr Maxwell,

The last time I wrote to you regarding most match officials and their competence, or rather lack of it, and why they were not allowed, or willing to explain their decisions, you never replied, so I don’t expect a reply to this letter either.

I remember an interview on television given by the late Paul McBride QC about 7/8 years ago, he said “I think officially today we now know the SFA to be the laughing stock of world football, the decisions are incoherent, they are on the face of it thoroughly dishonest, and I never thought they were biased or prejudiced, now hearing what they have done today it’s very hard to escape that conclusion”

That statement was made after the disciplinary hearing following the famous fall-out between Neil Lennon and Ally McCoist, but it could also have been made after the latest decision concerning Alfredo Morelos. The whole disciplinary system within the SFA reeks of Arrogance and Dishonesty, and that is a view held by many ordinary football fans, and you are now part of that process.

Why all the secrecy? Why aren’t officials allowed to explain their decisions after a match? Why do the former referees who sit on the Disciplinary Panel remain anonymous? What happened to the promise of Transparency & Accountability? If these people are truly impartial then why should they not be named? Strange how jurors at the High Court can be responsible for one or more people spending the rest of their live in prison, but they are not afforded the option of anonymity, except in extreme cases, I don’t think we can class a football match as an extreme case.

If match official John Beaton stated that he saw all the incidents involving Morelos and deemed that no action was required, then he is either a “Liar or a Blatant Cheat” or Both, quite a number of former professional footballers saw the incidents and stated quite clearly action should have been taken on at least two occasions, I wonder what your opinion would have been if the incidents had happened last season against Partick Thistle, instead of this season against Celtic.

I was advised when you started your role at the SFA you were a decent and honest man, I was happy with that assertion, well I think that I have changed my mind on that now. I thought anyone would be an improvement on your predecessor, but I’m afraid by your silence and inaction you are just the same as Mr Regan.

Last Saturday at Ibrox Stadium the Celtic Supporters attending, and the watching television audience were treated to two hours of Bigotry & Offensive chanting by the home fans, a lot of it directed at the Greatest Manager in Scottish Football history, the late Jock Stein. There was also extremely offensive banners displayed regarding Big Jock, which must surely distress any of his family watching.

The other main target of the morons appeared to be Leigh Griffiths, now anyone who doesn’t have sympathy with another human being with fairly serious medical issues, I would suggest those people are less than human themselves. The whole match was the worst I’ve experienced in terms of offensive behaviour, and let me state for the record that the best team won on the day.

The most annoying thing for me and many others, is that not one single word of condemnation has come from you or anyone else at the SFA/SPFL. The whole watching football audience must now believe that type of behaviour is acceptable at football matches in Scotland. I’ll quote Paul McBride once again “The laughing stock of world football” well done Mr Maxwell, Honesty, Integrity, and Transparency, the Missing Ingredients from Scottish Football.

And finally Mr Maxwell, I note that there has been no update on the progress of the Judicial Panel Disciplinary Tribunal appointed to examine the circumstances surrounding the awarding of a UEFA Licence to Oldco Rangers in 2011. I would just remind you, that the Resolution 12 people will not be going away, let’s hope it’s not another whitewash or cover up.

I thought is was for that kind of reason but I don`t like to reinforce the myth that, because Rangers were (and Sevco is) a Protestant Club, then Celtic must be portrayed as a Catholic Club.

Here , in Arbroath, I have a good and intelligent mate ( a Dundee United fan) who, in spite of knowing that there is not one Catholic among the good few Celtic supporters he knows, still uses the Huns Protestant;Celtic Catholic argument to help promote the popular ` two cheeks of the same arse` myth .
