Beaton threshold on kicking, stamping and the rest

1148

We deservedly lost at Ibrox on Saturday, so it would have been inappropriate to apportion any responsibility towards referee John Beaton, for the free reign Newco player Alfredo Morelos had to kick Scott Brown, stamp on Anthony Ralston and assault the genitals of Ryan Christie during the game.

These things occasionally happen in football (although seldom in such quantities) and are picked up by the SFA review process.  What is exceptional about these circumstances is that the review process is unable to act as the referee claims to have witnessed each incident and determined no action was worthy of a caution or more.

Beaton will have mitigated his decisions with some or other explanation, perhaps with “It wasn’t that bad a stamp” type comment.  This is how the process works.  The system is rightly designed to protect referees and allow them latitude to make decisions, including the occasional mistake.

It is not always easy to view common assault for what it is, in fact, it is easy to get carried away with an occasion and raise your threshold for such matters.  It is only human to be affected this way.  But this is bad refereeing.

Beaton could have taken the easy route out and claimed he missed one or more of the incidents, each was off the ball, after all.  That would have allowed the review panel to dispassionately decide if such attacks are to be prohibited, or encouraged, in our game.  Instead, he affirmed that in his view, there was nothing in Morelos behaviour worthy of a caution.

I have no idea what Dedryck Boyata said to earn his red card from John Beaton against St Johnstone earlier this season but I defended the referee’s decision that day.  You have to trust match officials to competently carry out their duties.  Do I still trust John Beaton’s views on kicking players, stamping, genital punching and the like?  No.  His views and significantly out of line with mine.

I don’t see a conspiracy in what happened this week, just a referee who was not up to the job.  A good referee would have cautioned Morelos for the first incident (kick on Brown).  This may have prevented the more serious attacks on Ralston and Christie, but the Newco player was not even spoken to after any of the incidents.

These are not easy games to officiate but this was not a game full of controversy or incident, only one player and one referee lost the plot.

The late, great Jock Stein once famously said, football without fans is nothing. Absolutely correct. Now then, if we expand on that, then who really does have the power at our beloved football club? Is it the Board, the manager, the players, no! We do and really always have, we just don’t see it.

Like any business, customers are king, without which there would be no business at all, sorry for stating the blindingly obvious. What use are the board, manager, the players if the fans don;t pay to watch? No fans, no football club.

Ask if we are using that power, not really are we? As a support, we are 100% taken for granted, the board well knowing that we are the ones who really love our club, not them, their god is the silver dollar.

For whatever reason known only to the directors, we the fans are suffering the bile and cheating and blatant discrimination at the hands of the “establishment”, week in, week out, year in, year out and despite many many promptings, our board continue to do nothing, why? and that my friends just ain’t right. On top of that , there are bullets in the post to our manager, assaults on the manager and team bus attacked at bigotdome, the list goes on and on.

We have of course, known this for decades, yet we get fobbed off at every turn, year after year. Just look at the brilliant work the Res 12 guys did and the painstaking work they put into that, yet our board just kicked it into the long grass.

So , what can we do then? I’m a tad too old to be leading a revolution but as I see it, the way to make our board see we have the power , is for us to use our financial muscle. Whether this is done by not renewing season tickets, boycotts, I know not, but ask yourselves this. Who is the constant at Celtic, us the fans. The board and managers and players are custodians and transient and nothing changes.

If we want change then it is up to us to make it happen, failing that, then sit back and be treated like the idiots we possibly are.

We also need a much more open board who keep us informed with the actual day to day running of our club. Something like a weekly statement to the fans would be a start.

    Anyway, sorry for going on.

“the approach he takes to all things Celtic is unique, measured, considered and informed. I know this makes him unpopular”

I think it’s a stretch to make the claim you have. Paul has rightly criticised BR at times in the past and it has been worthy of discussion- BR has in various games (not solely this season) made errors in selection and formation and Paul has written an article on it.

However, has Paul once criticised the board or PL specifically? There have been enough opportunities (certainly justified) to criticise, disagree or even rebuke the board for their actions (or more often that not, inaction). Has Paul once come close to doing so? I certainly can’t remember.

So forgive me if I fail to recognise Paul’s approach as measured and considered. To me, Paul is partisan and produces a narrative supporting one party (notwithstanding their actions).

Whether there is an issue with Paul being partisan on his own blog is another discussion (I don’t think there is, provided parties recognise him as such); but let’s not try and view him as an impartial commentator.

The club will tell you you get the chance to communicate via the View the SLO and the AGM, however if anything is raised that puts them on the spot e.g. Res 12 they have a plant ready to ask about sectarian singing, cold pies etc, nothing more than a token gesture to company requirements is the AGM, the block votes have it sewn up.

We also end up with a Chairman Bankier who has just been given a 60% pay increase, who is keen to criticise the Celtic support, and in my opinion does nothing else.

  10. Celtic Football Club is surprised that there will be no disciplinary action taken by the Scottish FA regarding the incidents during the match on December 29, which have been widely addressed in the media.

It is reported that no action was taken because the match referee saw all of the incidents in question.

Given that the referee took no action at the time, this tends to suggest that such conduct, which in one instance led to a Celtic player, Anthony Ralston, being injured, is acceptable in Scottish football. That cannot be right.

On the day, Celtic did not play well enough to win the match, something we accept. However, this issue goes beyond the result of the match.

Celtic is not the only club this season to raise concerns regarding the standard of officiating at matches in

Scotland, concerns which have also been shared by many commentators on the game.

In order to fully understand what is going on, Celtic, our supporters, Scottish clubs and the general Scottish football public need transparency in these matters, and we therefore call on the Scottish FA to allow the referee, John Beaton, to explain these decisions publicly as well as any match officials involved in other similar circumstances.

In the meantime, we have requested a meeting with Scottish FA Chief Executive, Ian Maxwell, and the Association’s Head of Refereeing.

It’s very difficult to quantify things like standards of behavior (I know Paul, for example, would always look for measurables before making a statement) but in my opinion the level of what is acceptable in the internet has changed a lot for the worse over the last few years.

Maybe I’m getting old, but nothing grinds my gears more than seeing outright disrespect for Paul from people posting on the website he set up himself. I can’t really get my head around why anyone would do it

The person responsible for scouting Vic, VvD and a couple of others was a bloke called Neil McGuinness, he was one of the IT support guys at Celtic Park and then got a job scouting, all he did was video analysis, he recommended them to his then boss John Park who was head of scouting and took all the kudos.

A fair few of the natives are restless by the looks of things.

Well, if you will persist in contributing to the corrupt game they will continue to cheat you, it really isny rocket science, starve them of the green pound, you will be surprised how quickly things will change if that were to happen.

Think back, it was the threat of depriving a couple of clubs season ticket money that forced the sfa/spl to feck the huns into the bottom league, had they not stood up to them the hun would have gone straight back into the top league, that was only the threat of depriving them of money, just think about that for a minute.

The Sheep and Dun Utd were the clubs, the Celtic support were too busy gloating and gorging on jelly and ice cream, some things come back to haunt us so they do.

If they keep getting away with it, where will it all end you have to ask yourself, is a short term pain worth the long term gain, it’s down to you people, withhold your money and you will get what you want.

Celts for Change 2019, has a ring to it so it does.

    Cheerio from me.

It seems we have started to move up the bus . Let’s hope it’s just the start . The only thing that galls me slightly is that it has come after a defeat , and to Sevco at that. It would have been better to have come after the last Sevco game (McGregor’s stamp) , Hearts game (Naismith) or Livi (Menga headbutt). Let’s hope this is just the first volley fired in the siege of castle corrupt.

Lots of talk about super defoe 36 year old game changer and his great scoring record of 4 goals in 30+ games over two seasons. I suspect that why the southsiders can get him, cause no one else want him, well unless you read scottish media. lucky If davis has played 30 games over the last two seasons, jones looks fast but is very hit or miss and the boy kamara has been poor anytime I have watched him.

  26. I hope this doesn’t become a half arsed appeal.

Celtic representatives need to go for the jugular on this one.

At the meeting with the chief of referee’s, he should be made to sit and watch a full re-run of every decision that Beaton turned a blind eye to. Every freekick that Rangers got that was soft (and there were many). And every freekick we didn’t get when there was a blatant foul by Rangers player.

Not John Beaton, but the chief of referee’s should be made to explain what he see’s. Provide some sort of justification / explanation to events.

When you add in Beatons public flaunting in a Rangers Supporters Bar, then for me there is enough evidence floating around in order to get Beaton sacked. It’s that simple.

We need to achieve exposure of corruption on the scale of Fergus McCann / Jim Farry.

Don’t stop now Celtic. Lay it in to them.
