Beaton threshold on kicking, stamping and the rest

1148

We deservedly lost at Ibrox on Saturday, so it would have been inappropriate to apportion any responsibility towards referee John Beaton, for the free reign Newco player Alfredo Morelos had to kick Scott Brown, stamp on Anthony Ralston and assault the genitals of Ryan Christie during the game.

These things occasionally happen in football (although seldom in such quantities) and are picked up by the SFA review process.  What is exceptional about these circumstances is that the review process is unable to act as the referee claims to have witnessed each incident and determined no action was worthy of a caution or more.

Beaton will have mitigated his decisions with some or other explanation, perhaps with “It wasn’t that bad a stamp” type comment.  This is how the process works.  The system is rightly designed to protect referees and allow them latitude to make decisions, including the occasional mistake.

It is not always easy to view common assault for what it is, in fact, it is easy to get carried away with an occasion and raise your threshold for such matters.  It is only human to be affected this way.  But this is bad refereeing.

Beaton could have taken the easy route out and claimed he missed one or more of the incidents, each was off the ball, after all.  That would have allowed the review panel to dispassionately decide if such attacks are to be prohibited, or encouraged, in our game.  Instead, he affirmed that in his view, there was nothing in Morelos behaviour worthy of a caution.

I have no idea what Dedryck Boyata said to earn his red card from John Beaton against St Johnstone earlier this season but I defended the referee’s decision that day.  You have to trust match officials to competently carry out their duties.  Do I still trust John Beaton’s views on kicking players, stamping, genital punching and the like?  No.  His views and significantly out of line with mine.

I don’t see a conspiracy in what happened this week, just a referee who was not up to the job.  A good referee would have cautioned Morelos for the first incident (kick on Brown).  This may have prevented the more serious attacks on Ralston and Christie, but the Newco player was not even spoken to after any of the incidents.

These are not easy games to officiate but this was not a game full of controversy or incident, only one player and one referee lost the plot.

  1. It’s amazing what a bit more of the ole injustice can do for Blog traffic.

Injustice of the small potatoes variety in comparison to the underlying fraud that Celtic fans will

never forget, anything else since 2012 and the hurried ushering in, of Sevco now Rainjurz again,

can only be chicken feed after the big hoose stayed open.

Sevco beat Celtic for the first time in the league, four days of a transfer market, and John Beaton

preceded by Willie Collum ( don’t forget Pittodrie ) conspire to cheat Celtic in consecutive games, in

a manor the SFA used David Syme, Bobby Tait, Kenny Clark, Stuart Dougal, Hugh Dallas all Grand masters

    of mibbery.

  2. My opinion for what it is worth….we witness yet again how corrupt Scottish football is under this SFA/SPL. For the umpteenth time they demonstrate a GIRUY attitude towards Celtic and our support…. IT WILL NOT CHANGE… until maybe those who finance Scottish football wake up and force change… i.e. The Celtic Support particularly the away support… !!!! Not the PLC or any other club ( they will never support us in the required change of the SFA)….This is not sport we are watching it is RIGGED !!!

If we really want change It will not be brought about by constantly moaning about injustice and appealing to governing bodies…We have a choice …..

A TOTAL boycott of AWAY and SFA/SPL games will force change …. without the Green pound the game is unsustainable …..or

We Continue with status quo….and if we do ….we will have to live with life as it is constantly complaining about refs, masons and injustices and forever remain at the back of the bus …..

I’ve been critical of the CSA recently but to be fair that letter is a belter.

  6. Well.

If you believe that this blog is a mouthpiece for PL and The Board, then you must also entertain the possibilty that the various expressions of disgust and disbelief here this afternoon might have played a part in the timing and release of that statement.

Perhaps the reactions and comments/views on here were used to gauge the level of feeling amongst an element of the fans.

Too good to be true ? We might never know for sure.

Good to see the statement, but the reality is we are completely on our own here. The other clubs don’t give a hoot. Until it happens to them. Then they come out and have a blast about how the “old firm” (sic) get all the decisions.

They will be delighted with an “old firm” “title race”. Brings more attention to the game here. More money so they can sit back on their fat, lazy backsides and feed off the scraps of the extra trickle down. That way they don’t have to put any effort or investment into developing their own clubs.

The MSM are the same, only with the added dimension of having a favoured dog in the fight. Sure, they will pretend they are glad to see Kilmarnock in the mix. But the fact they were talking about Celtic going six points clear tells you all you need to know.

Oh, anyone know who the white-haired guy at the right is during the cup presentation (1.08-2.00)? Looks even more sick than Strong Rangers McRae! Maybe they ate something bad?

For sure he is, question is why, if it’s down to trust, whatever way you look at it that is not a very good state of affairs, I don’t have a clue, I wish the support had more of a notion of what is happening, we don’t so it’s a divide and rule within the support, again imo not a great state of affairs, we need unity not division.

    Corkcelt, TET,

I read your comments on Paul’s leader today and also thought it was a strange line to take.

It certainly waken the blog from it’s post festivities torpor.

The subsequent statement from the club, for me, put an alternative slant on the debate.

What if it was a case of Paul having foreknowledge of Celtic’s statement and was leaving the way clear, thereby placing the focus on Celtic v the SFA, without CQN being quoted as the instigators of an attack on one of Scotland’s finest referees.

As it was, there was a lot of empty noise voiced on here, including boycotting the club, etc.

I posted earlier about the Celtic support being asleep for the past 6 years, while all this chicanery was unfolding.

As TET also reminded the blog, it was supporters of other clubs who threw a spanner in the works.

    Ask not……..

  16. Right statement oot he way.

    Have we signed anyone yet?

    Naw didnae think so.

  17. Sitting watching Vikings last night, wish we had some of them in our team now, and Mrs TT is on her i-pad, probably one of the Dumbarton sites she frequents.

All of a sudden i hear “Oh my God”, thinking something had happened tae one of her family I asked what was wrong.

her sister-in-law had posted the picture of Broonie getting kicked in the hips and haws, did you see this she asks, he just kicked him where it hurts, quite eloquently put for a wee lassie that went tae a convent school.

She had no idea it was sevco or who the player is. When i explained about that and other instances she said is he no black, in other words if he’s no fae Scotland or the black north why the hatred, she did say on looking at the photie he knew what he was doing.

I then told her he was Colombian, “are they no supposed tae be Catholics, aye I replied but so was Pablo Escobar and no matter how much a Robin Hood he was portrayed he was still a wrong yin and it was all about the coke and money.

She’s still not getting it and wonders why a black Catholic would hate us so much, money I replied plus he’s allegedly fond of the marching powder so might have been coked up prior to the game.

So here we have a wee Dumbarton lassie that’s lived over here for 40+ years from a rabid Tim family and lots of nieces, nephews and cousins at hame still following the bhoys aghast that in this day and age what she used tae hear her da and later on me complaining about is still occurring.

Thankfully the support have made enough noise tae ensure our club, and it is ours not just DD’s are trying tae dae something about it.

  18. Glad that Celtic have said something. However, I’d also look for them to tell us once they have spoken to Maxwell and Fleming and what the outcome was. The statement mentions transparency so let’s involve us in that too……

  19. While I don’t attend away games anymore, I would be all for our boycotting those matches. I would also try and refuse a ticket for Hampden, if we get to the semi or even final of the Cup, even if means not witnessing the treble treble. We have to show the SFA that we mean business. We will no longer tolerate their cheating for and favouritism of the deid team.

  20. Dexter P. Bampot on

    Is this overly conspiratorial?

BR made no secret of his ire at the complete bollocks made of the last transfer window.

BR has made it clear we need to bring in new players this transfer window.

Celtic have not hit the ground running by signing anyone early, suggestive of a lack of real work to address BR’s reasonable demands.

If this window is another failure could this be a deliberate ploy to push BR out and get a yes man in?

Jeez, you were doing so well till your last five words……:-)

” What if it was a case of Paul having foreknowledge of Celtic’s statement and was leaving the way clear, thereby placing the focus on Celtic v the SFA, without CQN being quoted as the instigators of an attack on one of Scotland’s finest referees.”

You may well be right tho, we can only speculate since we are in the dark about most things, I am happy they were roused from their slumber but unhappy it was so wishy washy, I very much doubt there will be any follow up, what is the sfa gonna do or say, aye we will sort it, not a hope, the only way they can sort it is money, referees are like everyone else, they like the money they get, demote them for mistakes and thus deprive them of the money, make them spend weeks without the juicy cheque, it will change their minds quick enough imo.

  23. Dexter P. Bampot on

Can we request a meeting with Peter and Desmond to demand answers as to why Celtic haven’t effing signed any players?

  24. I don’t know ThomtheTim maybe Paul did know something and was playing silly beggars with us.

However all any of us can do is to respond to what we see in front of us.

As you are probably aware I am one of the more mild Poster’s on the site and I certainly don;t make a habit of having a go at Paul but today’s Leader was a step too far even for me.

It just beggars belief that any self respecting referee could clearly see all the incidents that Morelos was involved in and take no action, even the super gardener Sally was calling out Morelos for his shenannigans.

  25. FAO THE MODERATORS..

    Right back at you Jimthetim53.

  26. It’s time Fleming was removed. He has had several years to develop referees and failed.

His is a symptom of the wider SFA incompetence where failure is tolerated / encouraged as long it helps the Huns.

Beaton is a ned and should not be allowed to referee games involving the Ibrox club or ourselves.

Maxwell has to show what he is made of or is he another unconscious incompetent like McRae or in cahoots with the Ibrox club like Ogilvie etc

Celtic need to go for jugular and bring in QC with associated costs for both parties.

Ps no Celtic player should represent HFA XI until the alki tax cheat is gone

  27. Maybe P67s article was to dip the club’s toe in the water, and seen water boarding was taking place.

    Corkcelt/TET,

I recognise you and TET as being amongst the most measured and mild posters on the blog.( It’s maybe an age thing !)

This alone means that your views should be respected.

I don’t think Celtic’s statement should have been firing from the hip.

Hopefully that will come in a face to face confrontation, armed with enough evidence to sink the Bismark, again.

My own favoured outcome is for the Scottish Refs Assoc. to call an all out strike.

  29. Good to see each non incident shown on BBC Scotland news tonight reporting the call to allow the referee to explain his decisions.

  30. IF Beaton was asked by ANY Celtic player immediately after the assaults by the Drug Induced Ugly Kid… ” Ref, that must be at lkeast a Yellow card etc etc”…and IF Beaton responded by saying that ” HE didnt SEE or didnt have a clear view etc, then I want ANY Celtic Player ( IF they were told this by Beaton), to step forward and tell us ? IF Beaton DID say anything like the above to ANY Celtic player or Coaching Staff…then that would impact on his ” Statement” to The SFA that he SAW all the incidents ?

In other words he has also LIED , knowing that to some extent it would tie up the Compliance Officers hands !

  31. What is the Stars on

By the way while all the weeping wailing and gnashing of teeth is going on about all tbe things that Dastardly Lawwell does and doesn’t do some have seemed dismissive of the proposal to link up with Shamrock Rovers.

Personally I think it could be a very good move

Rovers have invested a lot of time and effort into developing their schoolboy/underage/academy set up. Probably the first League of Ireland to properly do so.For the last 5 years Rovers have finished 3rd in the League behind Cork and Dundalk who have both invested heavily in their first team players.

So it could be that Rovers have some potential coming through the ranks

Damien Duff was a big part of the set up

    Lets see what happens

  32. just for the sake of clarity, I disagree with Pauls “leader” 100%….but I could never liken his views to those of Barry Ned Ferguson.
