Bedwetters, antacids and transfer articles of faith

525

I love this time of year.  As we publish, 60 hours of the transfer window remain.  Celtic have gaps to fill in the squad, we have targets for each position, each target has his own target destination clubs, and the potential selling clubs all want to hold out for as long as possible to get top price – and some do not want to sell at all.

There are options for several positions we could have concluded on Monday.  These were not top of anyone’s list, of course, and not cheap either.  Hospital facilities are reserved in cities across Europe, most awaiting medicals that will not happen, but may be required before Friday evening.

How long should we wait for top targets?  You certainly wait this late in the window.  Bedwetters signing players early in the window to relieve anxiety symptoms is a sight to behold.  If you have that knot in your stomach right now, just go pop an antacid and let those with a seasoned constitution cope with stressful negotiating situations.

Every transfer window follows the same rules.  Players want the most money possible and the best stage to enhance their subsequent contract.  Clubs do not want to sell valuable players with a lengthy period left on their contracts.  When a sale looks inevitable, they employ agents to entice more bidders into the market.

If more than one bidder is involved, stalemate can run until deadline day.  People who ask, “Why are we not signing players earlier?” occupy that special peak at the top of the Dunning-Kruger chart.  None of this is news, we all know and accept this as an absolute article of faith.

So why all the angst?  This is the game, let the enormity of what Celtic are attempting to achieve over the next two days sit with you for a few moments and you might begin to enjoy the unfolding drama.  It sure beats wearing adult nappies (I’m led to believe).

  1. Don’t watch them but grandson was watching it upstairs and convinced me to put it on at 5-1.

McCoist and Co, its a good thing they got beat.

Won’t be saying that in the board room.

    Their tears are delicious.

Embdy fancy a few beers on Friday in the Shipbank? 12 midday onwards. If not, why not?🤔

  3. Some FF comments:-

A tanking in the CL again, if it wasn’t for Butland it could have been 8-1, we are too narrow we gave their wide men FAR too much space, Cantwell had his poorest game for us..To many embarrassing defeats now in this CL, as a poster said, we are a pot 3 club, maybe even worse?

For some reason we did happily give up the flanks. I was hoping there was some tactical genius in it I wasn’t seeing. There wasn’t.

We’re closer to an even keel with them than all but one Scottish side is with us, yet at least they compete. That was an absolute embarrassment against a team who themselves are likely to struggle in the CL. We’re not talking a Man City, PSG or Bayern here. PSV are not on a different stratosphere. We should at least be competing, but we looked disjointed and utterly clueless at times. Frankly the scoreline flattered us and but for Butland, it could easily have been 7 or 8.

Man for man they are much better than us and they were on top of there game, granted we lost some very poor goals, if all our players are on there game at home in the SPL you will get the same outcome.

So did most of the teams we’ve beaten in Europe on our way to seville. We’re poorly coached. Can’t press, can’t pass, can’t pick up players in the box, don’t play with pace. The least we can ask for is heart and 100% commitment for 90 mins. Didn’t even get that, the usual suspects presided over another arse collapse after it went 3-1.

As soon as I watched psv destroy the Austrians I had a fear this early could be the same for us if we had to chase the game.

Psv are the same level as Ajax if not actually better this year. They will win their league and do well in the CL.

They have £50m players strutting about and at our worst parts tonight it shows.

Europa league isn’t easy but at least we can compete and rebuild some confidence.

Hopefully we can reset for Sunday. Playing the poets is the game you would want after tonight.

His only ” qualification’ for the job was his previous connection with the Club….if he hadn’t already been here a guy with his record at QPR would have been nowhere on our radar….in the same way as Gio only got the job imo, because he once played for us…..a Man U supporting pal said the same thing about Solskjaer…..anyone with his record in management shouldn’t have been close to the MU job but he used to play there and the fans loved him.

That’s the way forward, though late in the day. Unfortunately skilful and technical players are no more than targets for the hammer throwers that Scottish teams rely on.

Totally agree mate. Until the attitude changes from top to bottom is Scotland, we’ll be forever stuck in this cycle. Maybe explains why some of our lads have been doing well abroad. Whole different mindset.

Scottish football for me is Ian Durrant being taken out because he had class and was running the show. We haven’t moved on from then.

Big downside is the Barasic injury.

Possibly not available on Sunday to be left standing by Abada.

  5. Much as Cantwell is a horrible cheat, his energy, movement and passing are likely to cause our current midfield and defence problems. Without Hatate, DT should not start. A man down the last two games .

  6. Play 4 51 be disciplined and attack with purpose, a narow 3 or diamond to compete centrally , McG Iwata O Riley 2 wide pacy breakers Yang and Palma Kyogo to press Goldson all the game, dont throw the full backs forward every attack be sensible and press Tavernier non stop a hopeless defender.

We can all mump n moan about signings but tonight shows why it’s important to win our league domestically (stay ahead of the Huns) and as far away fae these qualifiers as possible

Domestic fitba is so important to get us into the CL then hopefully progress

  14. We have started the season slowly (not firing, Matt O’R could have had s hattrick on Saturday) the Huns have beat Morton & Ross County and trail us in the league …

    Yet

For a fan base that doesn’t pay any attention to the “media” a lot of us but into their hype …

We might not win on Sunday, that’s fitba, but I think we will … comfortably

Buzzing for the the CL draw at 4.30pm tomorrow, might be shoiting myself after it … but would rather be in it than not … just aim to beat our 3rd seed home and away and get 3rd … it’s that easy = European fitba after Christmas

    St Tams

If I may continue our earlier discussion …

I said the impact of Sevco not qualifying is “huge”.

    Pray allow me to elaborate.

Prepare to be underwhelmed BTW. Much of this has already been said.

Direct benefit to Celtic – only c. £2m but that is nailed on. We’re c. £2m richer for them not qualifying. Guaranteed.

Financial impact for them is sizeable.

Good post earlier about prize money difference of almost €20m.

Make that €15m. Sevco will get a compensation payment of €5m for being papped oot tonight.

Sevco CAN bridge that €15m gap by a combination of better results in EL group stages (they got zilch in CL last year) and advancing from the group … thus playing more home games.

But, by my fag packet arithmetic, they’d need to reach the Europa League Quarter Final or the Semifinal of Conference League (after dropping out of EL) to recoup lost CL earnings.

    Hold that thought.

Are they capable of the above? Who knows?

If they aren’t – cash deficit remains.

    If they are ….

    – More games and tougher ones post Christmas when they are (allegedly) competing for the title. Strain on the squad.

Games on Sunday. Should not be underestimated.

At least 6 and possibly 8, 10, 12 or more. Momentum and psychology are massive in a league title race. Celtic play first often. Their job just got harder.

Couple of final points If I may.

    1. The SMSM are highly likey to wail and grind teeth about the “coefficient” and the damage to the game in Scotland.

    Arithmetically this is bollocks.

Sevco will garner the same or more coefficient points in EL than they would for bonus qualification points plus zero performance points in CL.

Scotland will have three (possibly four) teams competing in groups.

Between them they should make a dent.

    2. If I were a betting man? Sevco 3-game ticket packages for Europa League home games will be priced higher than our Champions League equivalent.

    Watch this space.

    One more Frank Carson joke

Guy loses his wedding tackle in an industrial accident.

After surgery, the doctor comes round and tells him they couldn’t save it, but they do replacements as a private (sorry) arrangement that can be paid for by his compensation money.

Guy expresses an interest and the doctor opens up his case and shows him a range of alternatives.

You can have 4” narrow girth for £10,000, 6” regular for £20,000 or the delux 12” wide girth in mahogany for £30,000.

The guy says to the doctor “I’ll ask my wife what she would like as it will affect her more than me. Come back and see me after the visiting hour”

The doctor comes back and says “ What has your wife decided?”

    “She wants a fitted kitchen”

  22. If we win on Sunday, it will be down the wings. They look hopeless defensively. I’d still take a draw and be very happy. As far ahead of them as PSV clearly are, they still only got a draw at Ibrox. Sunday will be tough.
