Being competitive and disinclined against Bayern

362

History makers on Saturday but Brendan Rodgers and his players will have nothing but tomorrow’s game against Bayern Munich on their minds today. In truth, the 100-year-old 62 game unbeaten run achieved by Willie Maley’s team looked like it was equalled despite minds being focussed on Champions League duty.

While there was no shame in losing 3-0 in Munich two weeks ago, Celtic were poor. It was not until Bayern achieved their objectives Celtic players looked less intimidated. We were unpicked repeatedly in defence while we retreated under the merest pressing from Bayern.

A win tomorrow is not beyond Celtic, but win or lose, we have to learn how to compete against teams of this level. We have endured harsh lessons against Barcelona and PSG over the last 13 months. Progress would not necessarily mean repeating the kind of remarkable 2-1 victory we got over Barcelona five years ago, being competitive in the game and defending with discipline would be a start.

One more sleep then I’ll be in Paradise again, then another sleep and I’ll be on my way to Melbourne Australia to visit my youngest. While I love Celtic I have to admit that seeing my daughter again after nearly 2 yrs will be the highlight of the year for me.

She has been welcomed into the Mornington Celts Socail club In Melbourne with open arms. They have helped her out when she was in need and have honestly been a credit to the Celtic supporters worldwide.

I can’t wait to visit them and repay them for their generosity and kindness shown to my daughter Emma.

Mick and Paddy it’s my round.

I have no idea what KT’s currently earning but I hope /expect that the board sees the sense in removing finance from his mind by offering him a new contract well before the current one is up that puts him on a similar level to Scott Brown and the other top earners.

He is contracted to us until summer 2021 (after renewing it last summer) and if he stays there is a good chance that by 2019-2020 he will be our captain. If by 2021-2022 he gets the chance to go to Madrid or Barcelona fair enough. But let’s not lose him to the EPL because money becomes an issue.

We are so lucky to have a future world class player that bleeds green and white. We are lucky to have a manager and a board who will not push him out the door because of a big money offer because, clearly, it is going to come. Probably several times.

In the game against PSG we were not and it showed.

Likewise in Munich for the first 60 minutes.

We have to learn to play like the Lions and fear no foe.

Interesting game this evening, Bayern were so far ahead in Munchen and Heynckes has seemed to solidify the Bayern squad.

But things have changed since then, we are stronger as players come back from injury, we will be much more focused (I hope) and we’re at Celtic Park.

They will feel confident after the last time we met and have injuries and are resting crucial players.

So my thoughts are BM will be up against an altogether different prospect – they may get a surprise.

    Celtic 2-2 Bayern Munich

Interesting game tonight in the SPL, Steve Clark’s resurgent Kilmarnock take on Lenny’s Hibs at Rugby Park.

Hibs have the chance to leap frog Sevco into third place. It could send a strong message, ok Sevco will have a game in hand but with their up and coming fixtures, think Lenny will fancy keeping hold of a European Berth.

  15. Ranjurs Director of Football Mark Allen has appointed former Ranjurs man Bomber Brown as the clubs new Head Scout in the UK.

Allen has revealed the appointment of Brown, 55, was an easy decision to make.

He added: “When you go back and look at some of those characteristics I mentioned in terms of the player profile, John is well-known to have had that history with Rangers Football Club and will know what a Rangers player looks like. He will be able to identify those sorts of characteristics.

“He has a track record in scouting previously and he was an easy choice for me and one I wanted to make almost immediately.

    ………………………………………….

Several points could be made about this “appointment” but I’ll stick to 1 or 2.

When this Chump Brown was a “Coach” there previously, I would ask any Huns at the time…”What could a THUG like him coach any young player ? If I had a son under his coaching I would be seriously worried about my boy as who in their right mind would have someone like Brown coaching their kids” ?

Part of Mark Allens statement…” He ( Bomber) will know what a Ranjurs player looks like” ?

I don’t really need to say much on that quote !

Yet again is this hiring of Brown ( a real Ranjurs man) a heavy hint of the “kind” of new manager they are really looking at, as IF they went for a decent manger, possibly foreign etc….would that new boss not want his own backroom team and scouting peepil in place ?

ANY UGLY HUN…who may have an ounce of brains MUST be looking at this “appointment” and thinking that this is yet another sign..or step back to the WATP , that we should be shedding ?

If Mark Allen is “Right” about Browns “talents” to know a ranjurs player when he sees one…How many fine young ranjurs players came thru from Murray park when Brown was previously there….Jamie Ness ?…and erm um…and…maybe this other one ?

I can’t stop laughing at this mob…it’s just one own goal after another.

  23. Re Pat Bonnar.

In the early 1980’s many of the Celtic players of the time would have a wee drink in Carnegies Pub in Waterloo St, Glasgow usually on a Saturday night. My football mate and I did likewise for several years.

One Saturday night, a large number of the Celtic team were in the pub..the usual suspects Provan, MacGarvey etc were there, along with many others including Peter Latchford and a young upcoming Pat Bonnar and both goalies were sat right next to each other.

Me and my mates were heading out elsewhere and we had to pass by the Celtic Bhoys, and as we did so..I shook the hand of every player…until I got to Pat Bonnar and Peter Latchford.

I shook Bonnars hand most certainly…but as I was shaking Peter’s hand I said…..” Big Peter…STILL Celtic’s number 1″, he thanked me and we left.

Outside, one or two of my Celtic mates said..” why did you do that, it wasn’t very nice as pat Bonnar MUST have heard you” ?

I said ” Aye..maybe I shouldn’t have said that in front of young Pat”.

So i felt a wee bit bad about that for years……..until……….

i was in my nearest local in December last year having just moved into The Calton…and Pat Bonnar was in with EBT Thomson, Stuart Houston…Chick feckin eejit Young, and 1 or 2 BBC Types, having a bevvy.

As I passed by, i stopped and spoke to Stuart Houston ( Nice Guy)….and turned to Bonnar and stuck my hand out..he limply shook my hand..but didn’t even look my way…ignorant Chump !

Given that experience and his feckin Soup Taking…I am now so GLAD that I said that to Peter Latchford ALL those years ago !

Unless of course Bonnar remembered me from that night in Carnegies Pub in the early 80’s ?………naw he couldn’t have….surely ?
