Being stretched preseason is often a good thing

565

St Mirren, who Celtic play in our opening Premiership fixture two weeks on Sunday, do not have the luxury of preseason friendlies against top European opponents, but they will have four competitive League Cup games under their belt as well as three friendlies before they arrive at Celtic Park.

Celtic have one fewer game, but the considerable benefit that tomorrow, we will be tested against Newcastle United, St Mirren have to hope that Annan Athletic are suitable preparation.

Preseason is not about the results, or even the performance.  Indeed, Ange Postecoglou’s memorable first season was prefaced by a 2-6 home drubbing by West Ham.  The objective is to elevate player fitness and work on tactics.  It is a time for risks without consequence, and gives us a chance for an early look at the new arrivals.  I would take another drubbing tomorrow if it better prepared us for the challenges next month.

  1. Never enjoyed drubbings of any sort, in friendlies it may be meaningless but tell that to the folk that have shelled out good money to attend.

Saying that, I see no reason why we can’t beat Newcastle if we play our best team.

  2. !!Bada Bing!! on

Glen D- good chance of trouble tomorrow, Newcastle fans are no friends of ours, huns will infiltrate them. The club should never have sold tickets to them out with their allocation, and if the game was free on our season tickets, it wouldn’t have come to this.

  3. Yes, I must say the performances against Queens Park, Cork City and Estrela were heavily criticised.

Yet when we seen it come together against Sporting Lisbon you can see the work that’s going on behind the scenes.

    Hail Hail

  4. If they have 12k tickets that will be the SE corner and most of the Lisbon lions stand, Ive never taken to the toon army ever.

  5. Louis Munteanu looks to be a very good prospect. I don’t see us paying the reported £12 million valuation.

Hopefully we won’t see this drag on for the remaining weeks of the window – set our valuation, offer it then move on if needs be.

Unfortunately the money we have in the bank is not a secret so Clubs will demand more when we express interest.

Definitely the level of player we should be looking at – whether it’s him or somebody else.

  7. Munteanu,Balikwisha, the LB,don’t worry,we will be working away feverishly to get new players in.In Balikwishas case,7 months.Nothing like being thorough.

That Brugge are just reckless.Jumped in right away and signed Forbes before anyone else did.Harumph !!!!.You would think they needed playes for CL qualifiers or something.Have they never heard of” Working hard behind the scenes”like we do ?.Another thing, its about time these teams dropped their prices to say,£1.7 -2 million for their better players. We are not made of money.

The game should have been either free or a nominal ticket price . Not a good look for a club sitting on a mountain of cash . I’m also suspicious of them offering the game on Celtic tv . A kind gesture ? Or hoping fans will fork out a £50 subscription which they wouldn’t have done otherwise ?

Going to the game tomorrow. Will walk to Celtic Park to avoid the city centre, I think there will be trouble with their fans and the hun vermin who enjoy being cowardly bullies. Be careful tomorrow bhoys.

  10. Watching the Open. MacIntyre right in the mix. Watching Rory last night and again today – why does he not leave his driver in the bag? He is hitting 20% of the fairways so far yet still managing to be at two under. Use the 3 wood, avoid the rough and he’d probably be several shots better off.

  11. Harman’s conditions all week, knocks it down the middle , irons onto the greens and putts brilliantly, if the weather doesn’t play up he will win. Hope a non american wins.

  12. August 1, 1987, Celtic 1 Arsenal 5, nicherarse opened the scoring for them in the 4th minute while Owen Archdeacon gave us a consolation goal in the 89th, the smsm headlines were “McNeill is in dire need of quality players” they were lapping it up as we entered our centenary season, our team that day was Bonnar Morris Aitken Whyte and Rogan; Grant Stark McStay and Burns; McGhee and Walker with Archdeacon being the used sub.

We had gifted the beast led huns the league the season before after holding a 9 point lead at the turn of the year and in the summer the playing squad underwent significant changes in with key players such as Brian McClair, the trackie seller, Murdo MacLeod, and Alan McInally all departing. Danny McGrain was given a free transfer, and Davie Provan retired due to ill health.

Centre-half Mick McCarthy was signed by Davie Hay just days before his departure. Billy McNeill then brought in new signings, including Motherwell striker Andy Walker, Sheffield Wednesday full-back Chris Morris, and Aberdeen midfielder Billy Stark, they would be followed by Frank McAvennie and Joe Miller.

Despite being knocked out of the UEFA Cup by Borussia Dortmund in the first round and eliminated from the Scottish League Cup at the quarter-final stage by Aberdeen, that season culminated in a Centennial double, with huns languishing 12 points behind us and their brithers 10.

Paul McStay won both POTY awards while a young Hibs player, John Collins, the Young POTY one

So why all the weeping and gnashing of teeth, we are still “the finest team in Scotland, which I hope you’ll all agree”

Are you seriously citing Bruges as an exemplar on how to do effective squad management to de-risk Champions League qualifiers?

    If it existed? …

… I suspect BQN would be in meltdown.

Celtic went all in on the Champions League last season and paid the price with our subsequent performances and failure to do the treble.

Bruges REALLY went all in … getting to the last 16 and making a fortune in the process (more than us)

… but paid a very heavy price domestically.

Pipped to the title by USG.

OK (you’d think the leadership would say) we went for it and paid the price. Let’s keep the squad stable and qualify again.

    Whoops !

    Half the first team sold.

Yes, 5 outfield starters sold this summer for €110m.

    Replace by guys aged 18, 19, 20, 21 and 25.

You said “Bruges are just reckless” ?

You might be onto something there.

  15. Seems to be on here on being like the huns ,nobody likes us,don’t know were this Newcastle no friends of us come from.

because even when he doesnt make the fairway he is usually so far down that his chip out the rough to the green is a short one.

think how many shots he gains by the fact he drives it so long.

if you only have a 100 yard shot to the green it is much easier to get close than if you have over 150 yards for example

I’m with you on this, no idea why we would dislike each other. However I would say that their expectations of their team, until recently, were hardly justified….a bit like Spurs!

CELTIC fans will be able to watch their team live in a Scottish Premiership match at 3pm on a Saturday on Sky Sports during the festive period in what’s a notable break from the norm.

The Hoops will travel to take on Livingston on Saturday December 27, with a 3pm kick off.

  21. I have attended the past 10 Opens. I didn’t realise how brutal the commentary was. It should be good but it is pathetic and as fawning as those covering the ‘brave lionesses’.

There is loads of time for Rory in the final 2 rounds.

My daughter’s wee pal from Taiwan (Kevin Yu) on the other hand had a very unfortunate +8 in the worst conditions yesterday. He is out in crap weather again today and has posted 4 birdies. Unlikely he will make the cut but 2 more birdies might give him a sniff. Really nice lad in his first Open. So glad he has redeemed himself today. Not seen him on a single shot in 2 days.

Crap sensationalist coverage ….. wasn’t like that in Henry Longhursts days. …….it was just crap coversge.

    It’s “outside of”………

  23. BTB,

Was a bit tongue in cheek. In saying that WBC,well, what can you say, always trying to have a dig, alas. 😂😂😂😂😂😂☺Just saying Bruges seen the player they wanted, and got him, before quite a few others. We were said to be making enquiries, but, well you know how that went.If you are happy with the progress, fair enough.

I am away to post something to annoy Collins. He seems happy enough so far.

  24. bigrailroadblues on

My old pal David66 has now lost over 90lbs in weight. I reckon that’s some achievement. 👏.

Still a daft fooker though. 😂

  25. Have to stick up for Bada here. When the friendly was first announced there was a lot of chat on Facebook and online newspapers from Newcastle fans. A lot of them don’t like us. ‘Disgrace of a club’, ‘the most hated club in Britain’, ‘terrorist lovers’, ‘why are we playing them?’ being typical of the comments. Quite a few on the other hand stuck up for Celtic and said that we were their second team and they were looking forward to the game. The latter unfortunately were in the minority. I don’t think the Newcastle fans will come with the intent to cause trouble but I think they will be infiltrated by the usual suspects who will.

With regard to ‘outwith’ : McCoist is not alone in using it. I often use it myself as do many people I know. However, it is not used in England. It is acceptable to use in Scotland. Bada’s error was that he used ‘out with’ ie., two words.

  26. Do UK Celtic TV subscribers get video for away games? I usually get Celtic TV when abroad but have never had it at home. Am wondering if I get it for tomorrow, will it do for when I’m abroad and does it also allow UK residents to view.
