Being stretched preseason is often a good thing

565

St Mirren, who Celtic play in our opening Premiership fixture two weeks on Sunday, do not have the luxury of preseason friendlies against top European opponents, but they will have four competitive League Cup games under their belt as well as three friendlies before they arrive at Celtic Park.

Celtic have one fewer game, but the considerable benefit that tomorrow, we will be tested against Newcastle United, St Mirren have to hope that Annan Athletic are suitable preparation.

Preseason is not about the results, or even the performance.  Indeed, Ange Postecoglou’s memorable first season was prefaced by a 2-6 home drubbing by West Ham.  The objective is to elevate player fitness and work on tactics.  It is a time for risks without consequence, and gives us a chance for an early look at the new arrivals.  I would take another drubbing tomorrow if it better prepared us for the challenges next month.

  1. Well done Scottie Scheffler on winning the Open over in Ireland.

Well done to Bobby MacIntyre, only five players in front of him, finished on -10 alongside McIlroy et al.

No mention of Saturday’s Orange Fest on the coverage, didn’t seem to bother the R&A though. Thought the crowds, though good, were exagerated, but will try to use them to avoid taking the Open back to Turnberry, best course in Scotland. Or is that because it is owned by the President of the USA, who will be visiting Scotland next week, albeit up around Aberdeen.

Even more disturbing, if you had access to that privileged knowledge, then why put it on a public domain. It not only undermines the position of the board but also the manager, very weird🤔

  3. The 10th story into this link seems to have been pulled from James Forrest”s blog!

    https://celticfcnews.com/

This was the title of the pulled article that confirmed what Burnley78 was saying earlier about Rodgers etc.

“Strachan’s post-Rodgers suggestion should terrify every Celtic fan.” The Celtic Blog

Anybody who trusts never mind finances Celtic PLC are to blame.

“You are up far too late young fella. Do you get the Glasgow Fair holiday in the Chilterns?😂😂

    :))))

    Too true…

Still up, straight after I posted got a “quick” call from my daughter…

Bad news is we don’t get the Glasgow fair in the Chilterns.

Good news, every day’s a holiday in the Chilterns, it’s like living the life of BRRB’s here;))

    Hail Hail

  5. James Forrest may have pulled the blog because he wrote in it that Gordon Strachan had suggested Damien Duff as his replacement next season.

That to my knowledge was Pat Nevin, not Strachan.

However, Gordon Strachan did indeed publicly comment on our manager’s contract situation which in my view, was extremely discourteous and unprofessional from the current technical director at Dundee.

Agree, this is a very disturbing situation, who if it is true ,is leaking confidential information.HH

  7. The hand of God on

All this speculation about players and managers leaving or not signing new contracts doesn’t really bother me that’s the way football is now players and managers come and go in fact I can remember 3 managers coming and going twice. One thing remains constant and that’s Celtic.

    B78 last night – cheers.

    Re Daizen’s improvement.

    No deep data to offer.

More goals and more assists perhaps.

The rest from my eyes and my gut.

IMHO his technique has improved, he’s more composed in key moments and he is tidier.

All the above achieved without compromising incredible work ethics.

We lost Kyogo – one of my favourite players in the group – and didn’t miss him much.

Two games in Como then the real stuff starts.

If AJ and CCV dont get 30 minutes in one of the games, that suggests to me they wont be ready for 03 August and must be doubts for 19 August.

I suspect AJ will be fine.

Not so sure about the big guy.

On the golf (and only caught highlights)

Some of the crowd behaviour was poor.

    Cheering bad shots from Scheffler?

    Just not cricket, old boy

  13. SPIKEY, Add ‘narrow minded’ and ‘bitter’ to your description of that muppet. He’s been hanging around that lot for far too long, it seems.

In what sane world is standing on top of a pub roof setting off flares a way to show support for a pal suffering medical hardship? He protesteth too much, methinks.

    Spikeys – saw this yesterday.

Just an ignorant human being with access to the interweb thingy.

Saw another one (again from a Newcastle fan) which was far more reasoned and intelligent.

    Worth a read.

Really enjoyed Saturday’s game with my son and two grandsons 6 and 9, suitably bedecked in full green and white hoops strip. It was the 6 year-old’s first game.

What a joy for their auld granda to see them on their feet cheering every goal.

A great day out for all the Celtic family.

Fabulous. I only saw it on Celtic TV but did notice the number of children in the crowd. Hopefully, a new generation of Celtic supporters. Virtually every child in my locale supports a team from the EPL.

BTW I really enjoyed the presentation by Celtic TV.

  18. TOM McLAUGHLIN at 8:46

That’s the spirit, Tom.. I remember taking my then 6 year old grandson to Stan Petrov’s cancer awareness/ fundraising game with James Milner. At that time he was a bit scared of noises and crowds. Like Saturday, there were lots of families and very young kids there who would not normally get to a game. Twenty minutes into the game he was waving his flag and cheering away like mad and I thought to myself – “Job Done”…..as, indeed, it was.

  19. It would be interesting to know how many of those supporting Celtic on Saturday are regulars at Celtic Park. Judging by the looks of those around me, there weren’t too many.

I’m only aware of two ST holders who went to the game , it was a great opportunity for none ST folk to see the Hoops, though.

Unfortunately the price was a bit steep and unnecessary….

  21. Excuse me going political –

UK doctors volunteering in Gaza are reporting the following pattern –

in any one day they treat several young teenage boys or 11-12 year old boys with gun shot wounds

On any particular day they all have been shot in the same body area/part – torso, testicles.

All families report and the nurses working with the doctors report that they have all come from food aid points and they have been shot by IDF or by ‘Quadcopter’ kill drones.

The conclusion of the medics is that the IDF are choosing a body part, on children, to shoot for that day.

    Monday – groin

    Tuesday -abdomen.

This is Ballymurphy writ large – establish a kill zone and shoot.

I find it hard to believe that’s how Israeli society thinks it’s ok to behave.
