Being stretched preseason is often a good thing

565

St Mirren, who Celtic play in our opening Premiership fixture two weeks on Sunday, do not have the luxury of preseason friendlies against top European opponents, but they will have four competitive League Cup games under their belt as well as three friendlies before they arrive at Celtic Park.

Celtic have one fewer game, but the considerable benefit that tomorrow, we will be tested against Newcastle United, St Mirren have to hope that Annan Athletic are suitable preparation.

Preseason is not about the results, or even the performance.  Indeed, Ange Postecoglou’s memorable first season was prefaced by a 2-6 home drubbing by West Ham.  The objective is to elevate player fitness and work on tactics.  It is a time for risks without consequence, and gives us a chance for an early look at the new arrivals.  I would take another drubbing tomorrow if it better prepared us for the challenges next month.

  1. The Chronicle reported: “Policemen stood shoulder-to-shoulder behind the goal, defiantly gazing at the hordes of human animals they had just driven off the St James’ Park pitch.

“For 17 minutes, the Battle of Gallowgate raged. This was the night soccer wept for the name of Glasgow Rangers.”

We continued: “Glasgow Rangers directors, shocked, shattered and embarrassed by last night’s riots in Newcastle, labelled the offenders lunatics.”

It was reported that a glass and litter-strewn Newcastle city centre was counting the cost of a massive clean-up as “shops, public houses, and even some private homes took the brunt of the damage after the game”.

Meanwhile, police praised United fans “who refused to be drawn into the fray.”

Good morning all from Govanhill. I’ll be walking to Celtic Park via Shawfield this morning. Meeting Aipple at the corner, haven’t seen him since St Patrick’s day. The return of the Louisville Layabout. 😂

“I have already watched my countrymen like Daizen, Reo and Kyogo do so well at Celtic and I will aim to have the same impact.

“I am my own player, though, and I am ready to face all my own challenges directly”

    Forthright, honest and professional.

    None of that contrived

“When I heard X were interested there was only one place I wanted to come ….” crap

  7. On Yamada signing, Shortbread’s website repeats word for word the report on Celtic’s official website but curiously leaves out this sentence: “I want to do so well at Celtic, I know that Celtic Park is one of the best places in the world to play football with the best supporters around and I will do everything I can to make my new fans proud of me.”

    That was a great interview.

Was so looking forward to KT coming back but had a wee thought for him “becareful what you wish for”, sometimes our hearts desires can prove a bit disappointing.

Yet Keiran seems well chuffed, genuinely happy to be back “home” and raring to go…

So pleased for the lhad and us.

    Hope he starts today.

Early days … no room for complacency

… but Australia look a shambles here.

  13. Chairbhoy, There were a couple of times against Sporting when KT took the ball off the toes of a striker about to let fly at our goal. Little things, but they can turn games. We’ve been lacking that.

Understand where you were coming from with the Bruges quip.

Having been keeping a lazy eye on European transfers since the window opened … I was surprised to see Bruges players being sold in volume.

I dont know anything about the financial health of the club.

Could be they need to sell.

    Otherwise strange approach.

Takes sustainable trading model to another level.

    Fassreifen @ 11:17 am,

Yes, it’s interesting, a lot of the top defenders now, with the top teams aren’t choosen on their crunching tackles* – they read the game, anticipate the move, then the speed and timing of these guys interventions are astounding.

KT has definitely got that ability.

Apart from an opportunistic try the Aussies have done little and are clinging on.

I reckon they’ll get steamrolled when the subs come on.

Good luck to the Celts today.

The Bhoys are back in town, therefore so am I for ten months of fun in the sun (sun being a notional idea mostly, of course).

It will be good to see some new faces.

  21. KT would be back at Celtic if Gavin Strachan or Stephen McManus or ANYONE else was the manager.

Absolutely FA to do with any individual.

He actually says this in the interview.

Brendan has enough credit with the support without his fan boys giving him kudos for something that didn’t involve him.

  22. BRRB and Aipple – have a good meet up at the corner.

Enjoy the game; I’ll be watching, so behave!

  23. Bournsouprecipe, finally someone my height! By the way, Johnny Kenny is 6’2″, only an inch less than Adam Idah. Surprised me.

Not a bad second half after a bit of a procession in the first.

    Credit to Australia.

A decision was clearly made at half time ..

    Sod this.

We dont yet understand the playbook …

So that is what you were on about. You should have said .

  26. Maestro, Gene etc, 16 year ago I took a trip over to Spain from TO to visit an offspring who was teaching business English to the spouses of diplomats, business leaders and politicians, apart from the on off bus tours in Madrid she volunteered to show us the cultural areas, including Seville and Grenada, and then she would accompany us back here after several years of working abroad.

BTW there are 2 open bus tours in Madrid, cultural and modern, we took both and the highlight of my trip there was getting my picture taken with the Big Cup in the Bernabeau, in fact I was also in the press room the day after they had unveiled Karim Benzema.

Prior to us leaving from here she asked if we wanted to go to Marrakesh, now being a former weekend hippy lol I jumped at this, especially as its only a short 2 hour flight, as well as the opportunity to visit North Africa.

We stayed in a house in the Souks owned by a French couple from Nice who sent one of his employees to meet us else we would have got lost, it was a revelation to us, especially when he offered us a glass of wine, when I replied that I thought it was illegal to drink alcohol he said only within the sight of a mosque and then took me up to the roof where we could visibly see mosques saying downstairs yes but up here no.

What also caught my eye was the amount of antennas, nearly every shop and back of stall has a tv going showing fitba and of course the amount of European tops mostly Italian and English was very prominent.

Just like Madrid, Grenada, and Seville we took the on off bus tours and the wealthy area with the likes of Sting having houses there was astonishing, oh and we also ate in a Pizza Hut and were advised that you CAN drink in the hotels, but again NOT out in the street, so no that backwards.

I have been fortunate to travel quite extensively through the US flying cross country for business trips to California, Denver and of course Vegas as well as driving down the eastern seaboard, in fact the song “Country Roads” epitomises what I have seen plus Mrs TT had been over in France as well as the Italy including the Vatican, Pisa, Sienna and Venice but Marrakesh although NOT a highlight just something completely different, so enjoy and take it all in.
