Being stretched preseason is often a good thing

565

St Mirren, who Celtic play in our opening Premiership fixture two weeks on Sunday, do not have the luxury of preseason friendlies against top European opponents, but they will have four competitive League Cup games under their belt as well as three friendlies before they arrive at Celtic Park.

Celtic have one fewer game, but the considerable benefit that tomorrow, we will be tested against Newcastle United, St Mirren have to hope that Annan Athletic are suitable preparation.

Preseason is not about the results, or even the performance.  Indeed, Ange Postecoglou’s memorable first season was prefaced by a 2-6 home drubbing by West Ham.  The objective is to elevate player fitness and work on tactics.  It is a time for risks without consequence, and gives us a chance for an early look at the new arrivals.  I would take another drubbing tomorrow if it better prepared us for the challenges next month.

  1. Paul Cuddihy: “Just goes to show, there’s only one Pope who’s infallible.” :-D

  2. Johnny has been playing well and deserves that for his tireless running. Big performances from Trusty, Imahura and Engels

  3. O.G.Rafferty on

Premier League, you’re having a laugh rings out

Maybe the Papal singing wasn’t so far off the mark after all

  4. Good enough 1st half from us

Inamura and Trusty get top marks

Would be remiss of me not to have a pop at Kenny for missing an easy chance (As I did at Idah), good workrate and gets the reward after the Kasper plays a long ball out and the pope misses it

Very impressed with Inamura, very calm and composed with the ball at his feet

Calmac had a good few moments as did Engels and McCowan

    Yang too

    Good half

We have a few decent players to come on

Cant wait for KT to get his roar

  5. Glad that Kenny scored. Missed a sitter but has put in a shift. McGregor has been excellent. Trusty defended really well, albeit a few off passes. Newcastle pushed really high first 20 but then satvdeaowr, as we got mirecif ball in middle. Inamura is definitely very comfortable on the ball

  6. Yang’s been great….massive improvement.

Also looks to me like Arne has been instructed by Brendan & co to be more like Lenny n Lambo rather than trying to be Lubo n Naka all the time.

KT for captain in the 2nd half?

  7. Celtic TV coverage has been good, apart from a 5 second switch up when we got a brief interlude from newcastle tv….

  8. Did notice one thing that no one else has…..

Newcastle fans had a period abusing their keeper

    Kept shouting

    “F@ck the Pope”

No wonder he made such a big mistake

His confidence must be shot have 10,000 of his own filthy fans abusing him……

  9. What a goal

Kenny holding the ball up and dropping it off to McCowan who feeds in Daizen

Cuts inside and finds Yang for a fine goal

  10. O.G.Rafferty on

Kent to Luke, Luke to Maeda on the break, cuts inside, perfect ball for Yang to place it.

    Fine goal

  11. Back to Basics - Glass Half Full on

    Yang seems much fitter.

Had a bit puppy fat about him before.

    Looks leaner.

  12. Back to Basics - Glass Half Full on

    Inamura looks very tidy.

    Not sure about his defending

  13. KT gets the applause he deserves on his debut at Celtic Park/Parkhead

Inamura looks like an able deputy

Hope Shin has the same impact

  14. The Blogger Formerly Known As GM on

Re. Inamura, from what I’ve seen so far, the manager may have been a bit hasty with his “he’ll come in and immediately go out on loan” chat.
