Being there still matters

You and I get to celebrate trophy wins more than any other football fan on the planet.  We have lived through a procession of unparalleled success, which started at the turn of the century, and kicked up a gear nine years ago.

This means we can be accused of taking success a little lightly compared to fans of other clubs, who would perhaps cherish a sliver of our silverware.  This debate crept into the open this week, after the defeat at St Johnstone.  The criticism, that we are indulged and unappreciative is unfair, for some of us, anyway.

This period (generation +) of domination was preceded by the long, dark, 90s, a decade which delivered the same number of trophies we expect to collect this season.  Success was rare, those of us who supported Celtic through it, have appetites sharpened in those times.

Let me take you back to the season this Generation of Domination all started; 2000-2001.  By April 2001 Celtic had won the League Cup, were on their way to winning the Scottish Cup and were miles ahead in the league.  The third treble in our history was within touching distance.

We needed six points to secure the title and our next two games were at home, to Dundee and St Mirren.  The Wednesday night game against Dundee was far from straightforward.  An early Tommy Johnson goal was cancelled out in the second half as Dundee, with the likes of Caniggia threatened to spoil the party.

Celtic’s winner came with minutes remaining from Johan Mjallby.  Post-match, Martin O’Neill was clearly irritated by the audible frustration of the fans when play did not go Celtic’s way.  Martin’s point was that the players were achieving hugely, football was not easy, so what was everyone stressing about?

He was completely blind to what 58,000 of us were thinking.  We wanted to be there to see Celtic win the league.  Watching on television is great, but being there!  It is something special, something that no matter how many times I experience it, remains a touchpoint in my life.

Our disappointment last weekend is not about a poor performance, it’s that for most of us, we will be sitting at home when Celtic win the league, instead of being at Celtic Park.  No matter how many times we win, these trophies still matter.

Maybe a replacement for when Brendan goes !!!

  2. I agree about Knutsen. Sadly there might be a few ahead of us in the queue if he ever does leave Norway.

The unknown is how the pressures of a big club where every game is a must win would suit him.

It’s not an easy job. If it was up to me he would be on the short list definitely.

    Brendan’s presser

Upfront Brendan Rodgers insists there will be changes needed at Celtic in the summer to boost the hunger levels at Parkhead.

The Hoops boss accused his squad of being too comfortable in recent weeks after slipping to three defeats in six Premiership games with the finishing line in sight.

Celtic could be crowned champions this weekend if they beat Kilmarnock and Rangers fail to win at Aberdeen.

But Rodgers insisted there is a lot of work to be done in the transfer market – even if Celts kick on and claim another Treble.

The Irishman admitted the club might need a refresh – but not when it comes to the manager.

Rodgers said: “It’s all about improvement. I think naturally what you have at our club is a natural slide of players that move out and come in every three or four years.

“It’s the nature of our model here, but it’s also the nature of players being here and maybe either looking to move on or want to come away from the pressure that’s here, because three or four years of it, it’s a lot of pressure.

“But we always have to be ready to replace any players that go. But obviously important for us is improvement.

“We always want to improve the team, improve the hunger in the team. “That’s always key. You need the freshness.

“It’s either that or the manager goes. It’s simple, there’s no rocket science in it. You cannot be at a club for a long period of time with the same group of players.

“And likewise, the same group of players need a different voice. But at this moment, it’ll be about improving the squad.

“I think change is needed. I think that’s that freshness, that new energy coming into your squad that alleviates any of that sort of complacency.

“So we will bring players in to challenge the squad and the team for the summer.

“That’s natural at any team. However this team does at the end of the season, come the end, we want to improve it. Because, like I said, if you just sit on that, then the team needs the competition.

“So either way, we will look to improve the squad.”

Rodgers revealed wide man Yang is out for at least a fortnight with an elbow injury and he’s looking for a response after letting rip after last week’s loss to St Johnstone.

He said: “If we’re going to be champions, then we want to show why we’re a champion. We want to have that mentality, strong performances.

“I spoke before about sprinting over the line. And for us, as we’re getting over the line, everyone is anticipating that it will be done. But it’s not done until you actually get the points.

“And I think part of my frustration also last week was the opportunity to win that at home.

“I think the last time we were able to do that, I was lucky enough my first time here, it was 2018.

“We have supporters travelling all the way around the world, following us up and down the country, everywhere. And it doesn’t happen often.

“So the opportunity to be able to come into tomorrow’s game to win the title would have been a great tonic for the supporters.

“However, it wasn’t to be. So it’s now about preparing now for the game tomorrow, putting in a strong performance, which we will need. And then we keep collecting the points until we are a champion.”

Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers has revealed that Yang Hyun-Jun will be out for the next fortnight at least after sustaining an elbow injury.

The South Korean winger’s arm is in a sling after spraining his elbow during last week’s 1-0 Scottish Premiership defeat to St Johnstone at McDiarmid Park.

Yang, 22, will miss the visit of Kilmarnock to Parkhead tomorrow and next weekend’s Scottish Cup semi-final showpiece against the Saints at Hampden Park before being assessed by the club’s medical staff.

Whilst Rodgers has no fresh concerns for the visit of Derek McInnes’ side the loss of Yang is a bitter blow but the 52-year-old is hopeful that he will be back before the end of the campaign.

Yang’s emergence at Celtic: The numbers behind his improvement under Rodgers

The Irishman said: “We’ve got Yang that will be out, he’ll have his arm in a sling for a few weeks, obviously he’s had a nasty fall and a slight sprain of his elbow, but everyone else should be okay.

“Hopefully, he’ll be back before the end of the campaign I think, as I said, it’s two weeks in a sling and then we’ll assess it from there.”

  6. He also hinted about the GTF to EPL

“We always want to improve the team, improve the hunger in the team. That’s always key. You need the freshness.

“It’s either that or the manager goes. It’s simple, there’s no rocket science in it. You cannot be at a club for a long period of time with the same group of players.

4-2 game was blocked by a strike.

The 7-1 game was a strange one. There was film of the first half taken but someone is supposed to have put a lens cap on the camera at half time and forgot to remove it for the second half.

The claim was / is that the camera was running for the second half but only filmed the inside of the lens cap.

Another great camera / live broadcast story is the live broadcast of the hun v cologne game when Cologne scored a goal and a still of the crucifixion scene from Jesus of Nazareth appeared on TV screens throughout almost immediately.

A trailer for the series was being broadcast on the national ITV stations at the same time and a switch was “accidentally” flicked, switching the STV programme to receive the trailer.

A Celtic supporter working in STV (hard to believe I know) is alleged to have been sacked over that one but I don’t know the truth of that.

  11. See the Labour Party is going to take control of British Steel tomorrow.

Lets hope they do likewise with Grangemouth Refinery, and take control away from the Tax Dodging Knight of the Realm, no not that one, but Jim Ratcliffe, of whom Eric Cantona is right vis a vis Manchester United….

  12. Should have mentioned that one thing both British Steel at Scunthorpe and Refining in Grangemouth have in common, is full Chinese ownership at the first, and 50% ownership at the second, via Petro China, based in London. Hardly the most reliable owners all round in the present context.

Or of football operations at Old Trafford come to that….

  13. Good little game down at Somerset Park earlier this evening ending in 1-1 draw between Ayr and frontrunners Falkirk, two good goals too. Couple of Celtic connections at the helm, John McGlynn who worked with Brendan early doors and of course De Broonie (‘Brownie’ in Brendan speak), our former Captain. Now I think both should be added to our League, but not at the expense, of the Saint johnstones, or possibly the Dundees of this world, even if it goes against the grain of the Old Firmers on here and elsewhere including our host…. and it has to be said Burnley78….

  14. There seems to be some mix-up about what McCoist said re the laws of the game surrounding the red card the other night at Ibrox.

McCoist said – “If Propper tackles Williams outside the box he gets red carded. But if Propper allows Williams into the box and then brings him down, then there is no red card.”

McCoist we know all about. But when Tims turn into McSleekits and only post ‘half’ of what McCoist actually said, then why would they do that?

McCoist and Neil Lennon are the only two truth speakers in Scottish football.

So what does that say about the Scottish football landscape when one of the most sleekit ever creatures in the game, “Coisty” is one of only 2 truth speakers to be found on the media, blogs, etc?

It says to me that when Celtic fans lie about what McCoist actually said, they either fear him and what he says, or they are too far up themselves that they think everyone is too dumb to notice these lazy and cheap lies, these Hunnish lies.

But why on Celtic blogs? And why are these lies so far unchallenged, by so called good Tims?

The GB warned again that these special powers laws or whatever they are called might happen again and soon.

Let me put it this way.

If the GB are kettled tomorrow then the park becomes a library.

The GB were kettled vs the Huns and and we paid for it by playing in a library.

What if the special powers are utilised against the GB for the rest of the season and all opposition teams are on message about it?

Will the PLC wait until the damage is done then make a statement at the end of the season?

that in Scotland, from the the 19th Century onwards

the Scots and the Irish can genuinely say…..

  18. McCoist and the LIVE TV Interview when he CLEARLY LIES ….

McCoist was assistant to Smith at the Huns and after beating Celtic at Celtic Park, he was interviewed by Sky Sports immediately after the match.

McCoist commented on the Huns fans at the game ” Who sang throughout the whole game in support of Rangers”…..

Immediately after THAT Comment the Sky Interviewer asked McCoist…” Ally what about the SECTRIAN SINGING by the Rangers fans” ?

McCoist answered ” I NEVER heard that” !

He was caught out LYING to a TV Audience, as how could he praise the Hun fans for singing throughout….and Yet NOT HEAR any Sectarian Songs ?

The Sky Interviewer SHOULD have pointed that LIE out and questioned him on THAT there and then !

  19. Of course ” special powers ” will be used again.

  26. Big Jimmy – McCoist would have known for sure what they were singing but he is never going to call it out. Unlike McCoist, most of their players today will have little or no interest in the words and meanings of what the fans sing. If the atmosphere is loud and the place is jumping they will think it is brilliant and leave it at that.

Most players today have little or no connection to the world that the fans live in. They can choose to turn a deaf ear to anything they might find distasteful or offensive. They are not being paid big bucks to think deeply about the meaning behind the Billy Boys or the adds on to the Soldier Song.

As an aside, I am surprised I have not heard the media asking any of our English players (or pro monarchy ones) what they think of the anti-royal songs being sung by our fans. It seems to me to be an easy cheap shot for a journalist with an anti-Celtic agenda to ask. I doubt Joe Hart agreed with the singing at Rugby Park when the Queen died and our fans thought it would be clever to blast out “if you hate the royal family clap your hands” during the minute’s applause.

“You cannot be at a club for a long period of time with the same group of players. And likewise, the same group of players need a different voice”

I get the need to freshen the team, add new energy. No issue.

But Brendan has been with this group of players less than two years?

As for the players – other than the five Scots, Callum, James, Anthony, Greg and Scott Bain – everyone else has been there for less than four years.

    Hmm.

  30. Players will move on , it’s certain and not just those on loan at present, I’ve not got a problem with that as long as the standards and first team keep improving.

  31. Alex Ferguson changed his assistant and every couple of years so that the players were given a fresh voice and new ideas something Brendan could learn from and it would certainly make sense to have a man in the coaching who could long term succeed Broony would be a natural choice agree.

Quite impressed with the job Scott Brown is doing down in Ayr, and hope he continues the progress he has made there. Certainly growing into the job as a coach/manager and would probably make a good assistant to Brendan, on paper at least, but as often said the game isnt played on paper it is played on plastic at Ayr, Falkirk, Kilmarnock and Livingstone, though banned in the SPL from 2026. Another former assistant to Brendan worth keeping an eye on of course is Chris Davies, who has just got Birmingham back into the Championship at the first attempt. Worked with Rodgers back in Swansea and after, and with Ange at Spurs, and is on the right path.
