Being there

1087

I’m sure many of you will remember the home game against Dundee in April 2001. We needed a win to be able to secure the title the following week, at home, against St Mirren. After the game Martin O’Neill sounded irritated at the anxiety in the crowd, oblivious to the fact that the loss of a late goal would have denied many of us the opportunity to be there when the title was won.

If you’ve been there for the highs (Aberdeen) and lows (Kilmarnock) of the league season you’ve earned a ticket to the party. Let’s hope the SPL deliver a home game next, as reported.

Apologies for the extended downtime yesterday. Plans are afoot for five new servers to load-balance CQN (which sounds a lot right now but we’ve had similar thoughts before).

Let the record show that the death of Margaret Thatcher brought CQN down longer than when Rangers did the decent thing. Was hearing the news a ‘JFK moment’? I was in the wee room at the time, a treat for all the senses, so I’m not sure how my memory will handle the situation…. mostly audio.

Britney’s drinking buddy? I would hazard a guess at the formerly Candid one, whom ole Britters used to poke fun at back in the day. I would name him but I am not sure if he is dead .

Otherwise I’ll say Ken Gallacher mainly because I detested him.

  6. Just heard that the Sun newsroom let off a large collective cheer when news of Thatcher’s death broke.

Very probable that this was as much to do with them being able to pull a ‘pre-pack’ issue of the paper out of a cupboard – hence an easy shift, earlier in the pub – as anything else, but still.

Can you imagine Brooks and McKenzie letting that kind of thing slide?

Many of you bhoys will be in the age range for the bowel screening programme and this is aimed to get children to discuss with their parents and grandparents the importance of taking the test.

I have had to carry out this test twice without the aid of that helpful video. Think of the margin for misinterpreting those written instructions.

I have used the gag before in reference to this but…

thanks for posting that Alex Tomo piece from last year. I thought of it as well, it fits hand in glove with what has recently been made public doesn’t it?

…also you may recall last year one of the more forensic posters on RTC/TSFM did some digging into the original Ticketus vehicles/fronts/shells and found some purely circumstantial yet highly intriguing data. The trail for those did seem to run back to the vicinity of the Peploe-less one. I stress vicinity. Could be coincidental, could be the ole confirmatory bias is rearing its’ lopsided head again…:)

I have a friend whos two work mates got the test in within days of one another 2 yr ago.

The one who done the test is now on the road to recovery after treatment.

The one who threw the test in the bin is now seriously not well and wishing he had listened to his work mate.

If you get this test please do as asked its a life saver.

Sorry, meant Patrick Harvie. Here’s his response:

Thank you for writing to me regarding the policing of the Celtic fan protest on Saturday 16th March.

I am opposed to heavy handed policing in relation to peaceful protest. The Scottish Green Party values the right to peaceful public protest as a vital part of a democratic society, and is strongly opposed to measures which hamper or discourage it, including the kettling of large groups. I have participated in protests which have been inappropriately policed, including through the use of covert surveillance, intimidation and attempted bribery by police officers, kettling and arrests of non-violent demonstrators. I would welcome an inquiry into the use of such tactics in general, but I would not support restricting the scope of such an inquiry to the recent football-related incidents alone.

It is important that the police and local authorities work to facilitate the public’s right to peaceful protest, as well as ensuring that wider public safety is not undermined. However protesters also have a responsibility in this, and I would urge anyone staging a protest to enter into dialogue with the police and local authorities well in advance, to ensure the safety of the public is in no way compromised. Impromptu marches and street demonstrations in particular can have an unpredictable impact on traffic management, including the movement of emergency vehicles. To me, the term peaceful protest strongly implies a thoughtful and proactive consideration for the safety of others.

I would also like to comment on the underlying tensions which have led to the recent protests. There is a great deal of anger from fans and others in relation to the Offensive Behaviour at Football and Threatening Communications (Scotland) Act. I thought this was a flawed piece of legislation, and put forward a number of amendments to try and deal with what I saw as the worst aspects of the bill. These gained support from other opposition parties, but were defeated by the Scottish Government. I voted against the bill as a whole. You can read my contribution to the debate here.

In light of recent events, I have asked the Scottish Government to consider bringing forward a report on the operation of the new offences (I have copied my written question below). The report, which was a requirement of the Act, does not need to be published for another two and a half years. However, there is nothing to prevent them from doing this earlier. If they agree they will need to consult on the report, which would include taking the views of fans into account. I will let you know what response I receive from the Minister.

    Yours sincerely,

    Patrick Harvie

One of the most horrible groups of supporters I have come across in England. Few of the lads were fine in the pubs early doors but round about match time and after the match they were throwing everything they could get their hands on at us.

I wouldn’t go back and hope they get relegated. They deserve the manager and owner they have!

All the MSPs I wrote to have replied quickly, such is the importance of modern day PR politics.

Mr. Harvie’s reply was the most comprehensive. The others were mostly of the “I am looking into it” variety. (and, yes, I am aware of his views on denominational schools)

The two Labour MSPs, constituency and list, both asked for my full address and post code, which is very New Labour and Big Brother-ish.
