Belgium faith in Engels

102

Replacing the Belgium captain with 8 minutes remaining of a defeat to France is not a perfect evening, but the direction of travel is clear for Arne Engels, who came on for Youri Tielemans in Brussels last night.

Since moving to Celtic from Augsburg in August, Arne won his first two full international caps, an indication of how highly rated he is by manager Domenico Tedesco.  Tedesco, still only 39, has managed Schalke and Leipzig, so will be well aware of the developing Bundesliga talent in recent seasons.

Hooking your captain, who plays in the FA Premier League for Aston Villa, for a 21-year-old when you are chasing an equaliser is a ballsy move.  He has faith in Arne.

    Might have read

“He has faith in £35m rated Arne” ?

Just switched on Shortie and they’re having a full on Ronaldo love-in.

Haven’t heard anything like it since they last last covered a hun game!

    Celtic40me re squad management- cheers.

Basically I threw some numbers out there with my “Six out, three in” gambit.

I hear you about cutting too deep.

Agree we need to be careful.

I think Brendan will want to continue to reshape the squad by removing anyone who is not a genuine candidate to hold down a place in the matchday squad.

I’ll throw some names around … again with very little science.

    Tillo won’t be back

Kwon will probably move on unless he has a terrific season at Hibs. No real sign of that yet.

I think he’ll move on Lagerbielke, the hope being the money will be decent.

If it came to a choice I think Brendan prefers Welsh over Nawrocki.

Brendan seems to like Stephen. The Scottish player angle gives him another edge.

Luis Palma doesn’t seem to be a Brendan type.

I’m at five outs already without really trying.

    Three “ins”

    Upgrade Palma with one player.

    Upgrade Gustaf/Mark with one player.

If James gets another year – no more wingers.

Just leaves a permanent left back (assumes Valle loan ends and Greg stays)

Ooooooft…………listen to the management speak/BS coming out of the mouth of the Hearts’ CEO.

This will be interesting to watch.

  6. It will be difficult for the new Hearts manager to do worse than the dirty wee hun Naismith .

Who went out to hurt and injure a Celtic player almost every time that I watched him.

    A despicable dirty wee hun.

Is the Belgium manager any relation to the T T Tedesco for t t t tiling dynasty? :)

If so he must be one of the b b b best selections in the west

  8. I’ll just paraphrase him – “that wouldn’t have been a foul but you can’t get away with stamping on someone these days!!!!

He also just thought NcTomminay should be sent off then changed his mind to ‘nothing in that’

  9. Well Scotland made it through to half-time at 0-0

Portugal put any player in possession under so much pressure it is difficult to play out of trouble.

We would be doing well to get anything out of this game, but you never know, we’ve scored in our last three games. Tony R doing ok, and it is not a bad thing that he is getting gametime against very good players.

  10. BSR,

Wish Maeda had some of Palma’s skill. As I said,I like players with skill.Di Canio was a dream or me.,as was Jota.Di Canio would not get in Brendan’s team either.Got to be able to run about,”dead fast”.

Ange is doing the same thing with the German Maeda,Werner.OK some games ,but not really my thing.

    We all have our favourites.

A very wise man that no longer posts on these public pages, used the phrase

“ that’s why they end up at Celtic “ . It’s by no means always true, but case in point would be, if Daizen Maeda had Luis Palma’s grace with a ball he’d be Roy Race and playing for Melchester Rovers. If Luis Palma had Daizen Maeda’s attributes he’d be Pele.

    Poor Cristiano.

Amazing career but with two huge gaps.

Never did win the world cup.

Never did score on the “fallowed” turf of Hampden.

  14. Main difference in that performance and others in this tournament was that Gordon made a save when needed. The English goalie never makes a save.

  15. Good performance from Scotland tonight, the squad as a whole played well with no one player letting the side down

And of more importance after the last few games we got a point
