Belief structure of the debt lunatics

740

The wisdom of Hearts owner Ann Budge’s comments to the BBC that “Borrowing money for a particular capital programme you can understand, but running up debts that are prevalent in football is beyond my understanding really” is now, in 2014, surely beyond dispute.

Clubs are at liberty to borrow for infrastructure, or in exceptional circumstances, but in the normal course of business, borrowing for football costs should limited to covering the short-term fluctuations in cash-flow.

This thinking was orthodoxy until Sir David Murray led Scottish football by the nose into a spiral of debt accumulation.  The Murray Gospel found many converts among us, those who spoke against it were hounded as heretics.  Debt accumulation was the new crusade, the promised land could be reached with just one more brave act, apparently.

Suggesting this was self-harming nonsense to adherents who had supported a debt-fuelled battle for years attacked a fundamental pillar of their belief system.  Reactions were seldom considered.

It’s in this light we should consider the real lunatics.  Those who encouraged a business model which ended in liquidation, only to come back to the table demanding a fledgling incorporation ‘act like a big club’.  There’s a fair amount of research suggesting humans are hard-wired for religiosity.  We search for something to believe in, then stick with it as best we can.  If you have grown to believe that one more outrageous act will deliver European glory, a good harvest or a rain cloud, part of you will buy into it.

Stewart Regan’s “concern for the Scottish game” at newco Rangers financial position will be genuine, although the “Armageddon” merchant from the SFL has long left the scene.  He notes, “Rangers have got a strong economic impact, not just for Glasgow, but for Scotland generally”.  Well, oldco sure had an economic impact, on the public purse and several hundred creditors.  Mr Regan’s words should be a warning.

This morning Rangers International served notice that their AGM would take place on 22 December, just days within the permitted time period.  Accounts are normally issued with this notice, but for some reason, they were not on this occasion.  They are required 21 days before the meeting (i.e. within days); I’ve no idea what to expect, but it’s sure to be a quintessential Rangers document.

Some great offers on Celtic books and DVDs at CQNBookstore, a name already telling only part of the story!

I met Paul Dykes today – author of Quality Street Gang and a CQNer too. He was able to confirm my claim that Souness did indeed trial at Celtic!

*Big Jock rated him and wanted to sign him which the beast admitted he would until White Heart Lane legend Dave Mackay up on holiday heard about it and persuaded Spurs to sign him…..didn’t work out for him due to his own arrogance that he was better than players already in the first team so off to Middleboro he went where he blossomed with the help of Bobby Murdoch.

john wark also was on trial with us but later admitted that he could never have signed as he couldnae see himself in the Hoops…..effin zombie.

  2. January windae: A hard tackling, ball winning, incisive pass making, forward raiding, terrorising the opposition, game reading, makes it look easy midfielder…..please!

Why Rony is worried about losing Kris Commons he is now 31 and does not appear to fit into our pressing game if we can get a few bob for him in January I would let him go. H.H.

  4. Anybody watching the STV news. Just seen a baffling ‘The Day Today’ moment right at the end after the sport feature on the retiring jockey – John MacKay thanks himself – Twice! Looks to left, says, ‘Thanks John’, then right as if in answer, ‘Thank you’.

Brilliant surreality. Rewind and check it if you can; STV need to get a gofer to hand MacKay his notes who’s not named ‘John’…

I was talking to the real Joe Fillipi last night at a book launch in CP.

He was amused about your moniker and his hair.

Maybe a bit harsh on Commons in my view. Look at the goal he scored v Zagreb for a recent example of what he brings to the team.

But for that goal Zagreb would be favourites to progress from this group at our expense.

    Simple question.

Why are lunatics like Regan and Ogilvie running the asylum that is Scottish football?

    I don’t get it. I really don’t get it.

Could it be the fact they are lunatics got them appointed.

Campbell and his squad surely do not want anyone of competence in the CEO roles as they might be clever enough to expose them?

McAlister may be positive about Scottish football (compared to Burley)

however when commentating on Celtic his pain is obvious.

    Enjoy reading your posts.

Paterson from Hearts ,IMO, would be a good signing. Versatile, with an eye for goal.

If I recall correctly Darnell Fisher was handed his debut when

both our international fullbacks were injured.

He performed well in most games . How many more ,given the chance,

are there at Lennoxtown needing game time in 1st team ?

Fielding them is all about timing or necessity.

Henderson’s absence is baffling. Young players bring an energy

often lacking. Hopefully as the season progresses Henderson and

others will appear more often. The gamble lies with the manager , I

often despair though with fellow supporters who give dogs abuse

to players with little experience or game time. Opinions , opinions .

  11. Re Souness…

I wrote to Celtic (outraged teenager) when they sold Kenny, complaining on two counts: why sell to a main competitor for the European Cup and why sell for less than Liverpool sold Keegan to Hamburg?

I went on to suggest they should ask Jock to sign Souness from Middlesborough as a direct replacement.

Obviously nobody listened to me and I didn’t get a reply.

It was the beginning of the end of our greatest era.

  14. Further to signing players in the January transfer window, as JC stated, don’t underestimate the drawing power of European football after Xmas, especially for non Scottish prospects.

I would include SuperG in that bracket, and I think that if we do not qualify for the Europa League ko rounds then little chance of him signing on permanently meantime.

And as I’ve mentioned before, the absence of a summer break due to Cup Final/International/ CL qualifier fixtures means that January window is vital to hit the ground running in July.

We cannot afford another debacle like this season, particularly as the CL prize money next season will be much higher due to BT’s CL TV deal.

If we are to be taken seriously in Europe again (ie CL group qualification) then it is essential we attract the quality we need in January.

Without Europa League in the New Year this will be doubly difficult and again jeopardise our chances of CL group qualification and the huge prize pot that goes with it. So I hope we assure qualification tomorrow night – I don’t fancy going to Croatia needing a big result to qualify.

Winning the group also means we would avoid the top 4 seeded CL 3rd place teams (could include clubs such as Man City and Ajax) and heighten our chances of progressing into March and beyond.

So big crowd, lots of noise and the team rising to the occasion – COYBIG

  15. Livibhoy

Spot on about giving new players a run in the team, I have always believed they need at least 10 consecutive games to get their match fitness up and to show what they have got. Should be able to judge realistically at that point.
