Benfica arrive after 3 competitive games

767

Benfica will arrive in Glasgow tomorrow without having played a competitive game since 2 September, when they thumped Nacional 3-0 in Lisbon.  They arranged a friendly against Real Betis on Wednesday in an attempt to prepare them for this week’s Champions League challenge but the lack of meaningful football is less than ideal, especially at a time when clubs are looking to build sharpness.

Celtic were idle for two weeks before Saturday but have played nine competitive games this season compared to Benfica’s three.  They also have the benefit of not having to sacrifice a day’s preparation to travel.

Fitness late in the game, perhaps accentuated by the use of substitutes, could be crucial.  Celtic’s best chance of winning this one will come in the second half. Run the lungs out of them, Celtic.

  1. ernie lynch – Mrs Thatcher, of course, held down a real job as a research chemist before becoming an MP.

But you make an excellent point.

Most politicians at all levels these days have no real experience of making or selling or fixing things for a living, or indeed of providing any other form of useful service to their fellow human beings before going into politics.

Westminster has been captured by the professional political class, geeks and weirdos who moved from student politics to being political researchers / special advisers to holding public office without bothering themselves much with real jobs in between.

Unlike people who build things or sell things or teach people or heal people or cut hair or empty bins for a living, professional politicians have no direct experience of being held accountable for their actions, having to work in teams, having to graft, dealing with budgets where there are swift and brutal consequences if you overrun them. They inhabit a Twilight Zone where backstabbing and bullshine are rewarded and honesty is punished.

The Scottish Parliament is even worse than Westminster, because of the lower level of education of its average member and the shallower talent pool from which it fishes. (Indeed a talent pool so shallow it’s a wonder they’ve evolved to breathe on land).

I’ve mentioned my favourite MSP before, wee Hunza Yousaf, who was elected an MSP while still a boy of 25. His only experience of life outside school and politics was a 6 month stint in a call centre and sadly he’s typical of the latest generation of MSP.

I’m sure it’s very nice for young Hunza to sit in meetings and make little speeches and nod sagely for the cameras when Alex Salmond says something, but in a healthy society our hero and those like him would be expected to actually work for a living and get significantly past puberty before presuming to run for public office.

We should ban people from running for Parliament before the age of 40. That’d put the wind up them. (thumbsup)

Had a similar experience with the legendary (Rev) Al Green – Glasgow Royal Concert Hall – early/mid 90s.

I knew that he had found God some 20 years previously, but expected to hear (some of) his classic 70s hits.

He did perform a few of them – but the majority of his set resembled a sevice at his Memphis church.

Still listen to him ‘though – mostly the 70s stuff.

Heard him on the radio this morning ——- justifying part of his empire publishing photos of Kate Middleton in France last week and the soon come 26 pages of topless Kate Middleton photos in one of his Italian smut and gossip mags .

The irony of him spending a fortune trying to keep info relating to his private life ,private , whilst earning cash from breaching the privacy of others was wasted on the wee plastic headed soul ——–

The big difference between Italy and the UK is that anyone with the attributes you describe are fast tracked into the UK banking sector.

  25. In case anyone thinks I am anti-Yank : I love American music,of all sorts. I’ve met congenial US citizens. Once upon a time I visited some great parts of the States on a regular basis.

Their various governments have taken them down a hellacious road in the last 3 decades and their foreign policies are naive, dangerous.

Nowadays, they wouldn’t even let me in to their giant prison nation, even though I’d like to show my wife San Francisco and Savannah before I shrug off this mortal coil.

    They are both fantastic places.

But the thing that struck me about SanFranciscans was that they called themselves San Franciscans first, Californians second, and Americans last of all.
