Benfica, Celtic and a world record

223

I doubt there has ever been a series of home games in our history as concentrated as what lies ahead for Celtic. We have three in the next eight days, kicking off a series of nine at home in the next 12 league fixtures.

I know what you’re thinking, the fact that we’ve played nine away and only five at home explains our poor start to the league campaign, but all that should now correct itself….. Form this season is comparable only to season 2003-04, when after drawing a blank in the opening game away to Dunfermline, Celtic won 25 consecutive league games.

That run came to an end when Henrik Larsson was rested for the start of the visit of Motherwell. We had just beaten Barcelona and were on our way to a 0-0 draw in the return game. At the time the draw didn’t matter much but it left Celtic four games short of the world record, achieved by Eusabio’s Benfica. Since then Dinamo Zagreb eclipsed the Celtic record but fell one short of Benfica’s.

World records are not easy to break, Celtic would need to win every game between now and the split in April simply to match Benfica’s 29 game winning run (would be an appropriate reward for those who’d travelled to Dingwall for the game).

If we win all 12 of the coming fixtures dominated by home games, Celtic will be third and fourth in the world record consecutive league game winning list.  Impossible. Right?

  1. Just watched the highlights of Soft Loans Co v Mini’s. I was so sure the Mini’s would win I chose them at 16/5 in our 10 bet accumulator.

It really is disappointing to see Hearts and Aberdeen fall away in the battle for best of the rest.

I was going to ask the same question as Jude2005@6.02.

My sympathies are completely with the dog. I hope it’s got it’s rabies shots. Biting that big fat hun. God help the poor dog. The thing that those poor animals (the dogs) are subjected to. Someone needs to contact the RSPCA.

  3. The Hand of God: Great idea. The Final could be shown on a continuous loop on the big screens all day and a temporary fan zone created outside the stadium for the day that is in it. Lots of scope for food, drinks, music and memorabilia displays.

I agree. Beware hubris. We have a schedule of games coming up that would make it miraculous for us to emerge unscathed from.

Sometimes my memory plays tricks on me, but I have been thinking about the Ibrox safety issues for the coming games ( not just ours) and like most folk I wouldn’t trust the present incumbents to tell the truth if anything happens.

Now this is were my memory gets a bit iffy, but after the first Ibrox disaster ( not 71) was there not stories about cover ups and pressure put on all and sundrie or have I finally flipped my lid.

Any of you got info on this ?

    … From Wikipedia

After hearing of a series of accidents on Stairway Thirteen including September 1961 when there were 70 people injured and two deaths, September 1967 when 11 people were taken to hospital, and January 1969 when 29 people were injured.

Irvine Smith states that 30, and nearly 40 years after his decision, he is viewed with disapproval by some Rangers-supporting friends, who accuse him of “disloyalty”.

Safety certificates signed off after every incident. Further on it reads that Rfc (1872) contested the claims awarded after the 71 tragedy.

  8. ALMOST, nothing wrong with prawn sandwiches, quite refreshing really. I’m sure many Celtic supporters like prawns in some way or another. Roy Keane probably has had many a prawn based sandwich or meal.

Not a good idea to plant thoughts of world records into our supporters head at this stage of the season, once we’ve won the treble maybe then, but certainly not before. A bad idea. I still listen to Clyde SSB (someone has to!) and cringe when some of our supporters come on and talk about going thru the season undefeated and how no one can touch us a league of our own 15 in a row etc. Reminds me of another team who’s supporters used to do the same.

    ======================================================

    That caught my atTENtion.

I would conTENd your rather TENtative approach to celebrating Celtic being TENacious enough to have records re-writTEN, and will not preTENd I can remain conTENt with Celtic not having preTENtions to unbeaTEN glory this season.

But as we inTENsify our poTENtial to achieve such, and the TENsion heighTENs, I will not be osTENtatious or persisTENt in my inTENT to sweeTEN the taste of victory by inTENtionally mentioning our consisTENcy in case it threaTENs those malconTENts who don’t like to overexTENd their expectations.

OsTENsively, I wouldn’t want bitTEN by existeTEntial enlighTENment, so will reamin atTENtive and hopeful of reaching that unmentionable number.

The 1902 Ibrox disaster was caused by the collapse of a stand, which led to the deaths of 25 supporters watching a Scotland v England football game.. 517 supporters were injured.

I was wondering if anyone is aware of any plans Celtic might have for the 25th of May next year.It would be great if the park was to be opened to pay tribute to the Lions.I realise the proximity to the Scottish cup final that we hope to be involved in but we don’t even need a game just a gathering to pay tribute to the team and our greatest manager.

    ——————————————

I would suggest a coal lorry circling the pitch with the European Cup perched on the flat loader.

And 60,000 Celtic supporters singing, “In the heat of Lisbon”

But then I am a daft arse.

  18. Why doesn’t everyone that’s going to the Bigotdome on Hogmanay all wear hard hats and safety wear, sure to bring attention to the SKY audience
