BENKOVIC INSISTS HE WANTS TO STAY

FILIP BENKOVIC hopes to remain at Celtic until the end of the season – and help the team to a truly remarkable treble treble.

The Croatian Under-21 international centre-back is on loan from Leicester City, but the Midlands club can recall him during next month’s transfer window.

Brendan Rodgers is keen to get a reassurance from the Premier League outfit the classy back-four operator will stay with the champions until summer, as CQN reported last week.

City gaffer Claude Puel has already stated he believes it will be more beneficial for the player to make progress in his career in Glasgow, which is good news for the Hoops manager and the fans who clearly like his style.

Benkovic, too, has revealed his wish is to continue at Parkhead and end his temporary transfer with three winners’ medals.

The 21-year-old defender, who will almost certainly team up with Dedryck Boyata in the heart of the rearguard in the Betfred League Cup Final against Aberdeen this afternoon, said: “I really want to be here all season and I want to win trophies for Celtic. To enjoy that success with the fans would be priceless.

“This club have won so many trophies recently. So, people start to expect to win everything.

“It would be special to go back to Leicester with three medals, knowing that I’ve helped the side to success. No-one could take that away from me in the future.

“But I can’t look too far ahead. May is too many months away yet.”

Benkovic, who cost Leicester £13million when they signed him from Dinamo Zagreb in the summer, added: “At Celtic, I follow what the fans say about me and it makes me happy. They are unbelievable.

“Everybody in Croatia asks me about the Celtic support, but I tell them I can’t describe what it’s like – you have to experience it.

“I will take this with me for the rest of my life. I hope it will be like this for the rest of the season because I’m enjoying every moment.

“I like to dance for them – and show some new moves. Maybe if we win the Cup I will dance for them, you never know.”
