Bernabei window. Good luck to old foes in CL

411

It is perhaps just as well Greg Taylor has had such an impressive start to the season.   The alleged offence Alexandro Bernabei was arrested for yesterday will not enhance his chances of integrating into Scotland or the Celtic defence.

He is 21 years old, a long way from home and has a lot more money in his bank than ever before.  It is a heady cocktail.  Ange Postecoglou is experienced enough to know how to best deal with the player, how the season progresses is very much up to Alexandro.

After Hearts on Sunday, Celtic are away to Dundee United and Ross County, the latter in the League Cup.  Alexandro should be hoping to make his competitive debut during those two away games.  If he misses this window, he’s unlikely to make an appearance until after games against Newco and our first Champions League tie of the season.

Best of luck to old foes Bodo/Glimt and Copenhagen in Champions League qualifiers tonight.  Good to see honest teams that live within their means prosper.

Good to see clubs with a bit of ambition who don’t see Europe as “too difficult” prosper.

  6. P67 — I think that you are glossing over the situation that we see developing.

Given our investment in him I think that more should have been done to get him grounded in Glasgow — I fear that we have used an EU template for a young SAm player and it has not gone well.

It could be £2.5mill going up in smoke / poss even £3.75mill.

Big enough money to deserve a bit more effort.

    We have previous on this.

From memory OE was left to much to his own devices.

We have the situation of VB — CoViD19 et al — where he lost a stone in weight when he came over to Glasgow which would seem to be physical proof that things were not going well.

We had Mrs ML acting as a mother hen to a lot of the new couples.

She was probably missed more than ML when they left.

She was full time — he was only high days and holidays because of injury.

We are a big club — not as big as we should be but till big.

We should have a well polished path for player integration.

It should not have been a surprise that AB would be a challenge.

His words about growing up pointed to the challenges ahead.

But we have a player liaison department some will shout.

But if it is anything like other groups at P/head then we are in trouble.

We do not have established player liaison specialists –we just have fans with player liaison badge as we do in far too many responsible positions.

    Not the same.

We need to up our game — AP can’t do everything.

Yes, it was interesting to read Brendan Rodgers’ comments on Celtic PLC’s investment for Europe, or more precisely the lack of it.

We have had Rangers Directors ploughing money into the new Club season after season and now getting their just desserts, while Celtic Directors were lining their pockets.

Hopefully we have turned a corner in that regard.

There was certainly a lost opportunity to strengthen in the summer of 2018 and it has taken us four years to get back to where we were then!

If there has been a change then it’s probably more to do with partner club reaching a European final than any suddenly-found ambition. Be interesting to see what happens if they don’t make it into the CL.

  11. Guys,

We have 16 days to go in the Transfer window. Given the mad sums expended to date in the EPL I am not surprised that a top class international striker is drawing speculation.

Georgios may have it all and the world could be his oyster despite being over the mythical age of 25.

But not yet. Only the elite clubs can offer CL football. However I would imagine we will be watching the 4 years left on his contract.

We need European football to attract and retain the type of player we all enjoy watching. European football is the natural home and aspiration of a giant club currently playing in a small pond.

European football must be given at least equal importance as winning the league. ( After all it is the prize we achieve for winning the league )

It seems Brendan Rodgers recognised the importance of European football at Parkhead, but I’m not convinced that copious amounts of money would have achieved success given his style of play .

HH . In Ange we trust.

  14. GLASSTWOTHIRDSFULL @ 1:07 PM,

Yes, we have to wonder what would have happened if Rangers did in fact blow-up again, of course that was never really on the cards but it was far from plain sailing for them.

We could have been well ahead with the proper investment at that point, the annoying thing is we knew what the manager’s plan was and it was most definitely doable.

The other annoying thing is like last week, crossing my fingers hoping, what I believed would happen, that Rangers get through the round.

It’s a sad state of affairs you have to hope our partners will succeed as you know it’s the only way that Celtic will show any ambition.

BR broke DD’s heart in 2018.

He punched the bruise that MO’N had left.

When he broke his heart in 2002.

The two year itch strikes again.

So DD brought PL out of the attic for another round of second rate / low rent property bean counting wrapped up as cutting edge football club commercial management.

  17. MadMitch,

Totally agree – an example of something we don’t seem to have improved upon is our support to new arrivals. It feels like our Player liaison folk just find them somewhere to live and sort tickets for matches out and not much more than that. It’s left to folk like Mrs ML, Bain and Bitton to help the new guys settle in and we’ve only got Bain left to do that!

A definite need to up our game and sort things like explaining the laws of the land, finding shops which stock food stuff they would like (I imagine our Japanese interpreter sorted that for the Japanese lads but our Spanish interpreter probably isn’t Argentinian), find out where the local diaspora socialise or attend church/mosque/synagogue, etc. Feels a lot like we leave them to it and it’s up to other players to help out.

  18. Glasgow wouldn’t be the same without BS rumours swirling around about footballers.

A draw for PSV will do me nicely. Negotiate Ibrox and PSV will be 75% of the way there.

  19. MADMITCH @ 1.16,

You are welcome, we’ll see what you make of it.

Yes, that was a real headscratcher for me, why DD would have unleashed the muzzled big Pedro on BR!?

Yet tyrants do what they do, they are accountable to no one, so perhaps you are right, one things for sure, something riled him.

The 2018 transfer window was a different level of stupid.

  20. Paul67,

  21. PSV get Celtic VIP treatment with celebrity tour guide as guest drops cheeky Rangers quip

    Celtic Park

The club reps spent time at Celtic Park

Ahead of this evening’s Champions League play off at Ibrox, PSV Eindhoven’s top brass, key sponsors and corporate guests are spending the day at Celtic Park.

Before facing Rangers tonight, the special guests have made their way to Parkhead for a specially organised tour of the stadium. The PSV VIPs were given the lowdown on all things Celtic by celebrity tour guide Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink

  22. I think it is rash to assume that Celtic have no support system for new arrivals.

We sign a lot of players & the vast majority settle well and are wholesome in their praise of Celtic and the Lennoxtown atmosphere,

Obviously in this case something has gone wrong.

I think first of all we need to wait & see what exactly happened.

There were initial lurid rumours of Bernabei crashing his car and racially abusing somebody.

It now seems these stories were rubbish, from Cop Statement he was pulled for a Driving infringement and was upset at being arrested , which to me would be a pretty normal reaction,

He is still a kid, where is our sense of fair play,

It is over to Ange & his team to decide how to handle it,

Whatever they decide is OK with me but my hope & wish is they give the kid a chance to redeem himself.

Obviously he is skating on thin ice from here on but both the Player & the Club can recover from this.

  23. bournesouprecipe on

Fortunately most Celtic supporters were able to move on to the next era after the ‘ Brendan blow ins ‘ had shed all their tears, yet bizarre timing on the eve of the CL league unbeaten for yonks and still top of the bent league and at least three teams later. They all meet up here eventually win, lose or draw at the intersection of interest.

St Brendan got his millions that Celtic realists don’t have, and he’s in deep doo doo with his £20M plus squad of upgraded Comppers, and Hendry’s, having missed all the big gigs in England, or his slow boat to China.

Meanwhile Celtic supporters with or without ST’s scramble for extra CL packages, and await AP to hit twenty new players, all with his spirit markedly absent from his predecessors. We don’t celebrate success very well on CQN.

  27. At age 21, Bernabei is a young adult. Emerging science suggests that most people don’t reach full maturity until age 25. We are individually responsible for our own actions, in words and deeds.
