Bernardo and a bit of theatre

236

Football is theatre and good theatrical producers know how to put on a show.  That being the case, Celtic will take the opportunity to give the club a timely boost on the cusp of the opening game of the season by announcing the signing of Paulo Bernardo.  Perhaps our former campaigning Irish striker will even drop by before Sunday.

Celtic have been at this since Jock Stein’s days.  Jock knew that pre-match press conferences were an opportunity to put a spring in the step of players and supporters alike.  Brendan Rodgers’ comment yesterday that Paulo would be signed “within hours” is confirmation that the deal is done, you are just waiting for a bit of theatre.

  1. Hoping for positive pressers at the weekend before flag day. New signings would be ideal.

    Might just happen.

  2. This farce is kidding nobody……..we need about another 4 or 5 signings, to do anything in Europe

“Francis Turley signs new 4 year contract, looks a promising one, good to hold on to one of the youngsters, getting harder to hold on to them”

    ——————

That’s fooling nobody. We had Francis Curley last year- this is not a squad improvement😀

Seriously now- Brendan likes him and wants to encourage him but midfield is one of our more crowded areas – time to get most of our promising youngsters out to Austria or down to League One or Two in England or the Championship, at least, up here. We are committed to playing a team in the Lowland League but we need to be playing a team of 16 yer olds there and aiming to keep our team in the division – no more than that- as it is no place for a promising 17 year old aiming for a Celtic place. Rocco Vata WAS wasting his precious development time there- that’s why we wanted him to sign a contract and go out on loan

“Fact is, the mentality of the board is to beat the scum, thats as far as it goes sadly”

100% factually correct. Old Firm cash cow much more important.

  5. A bit of theatre?

Thank goodness for that, I thought it was just an unnecessary delay in extending a player we had last season.

  6. ” Celtic will take the opportunity to give the club a timely boost on the cusp of the opening game of the season by announcing the signing of Paulo Bernardo.”~

If the suggestion here is that fans should have a spring in their step at going to Celtic Park for a flag unveiling to watch a team materially weaker than last season, I respectfully disagree.

If the suggestion is that we’ve held this back to create “theatre”, that the player has been denied a settling in period, that the manager has been denied his presence to work with at the training ground, all so the club can pull a “look how clever we are!” pre-season signing which hasn’t strengthened us ONE IOTA from where we were at the end of the last campaign …

… well I would suggest that the people who came up with that have a seriously warped perspective on what our priorities should be. Very seriously warped.

  7. SFTB- I never said squad improvement…..IMO, when the music stops and Bernardo and Idah are signed,we need another 4 or 5 experienced players in, we will always look to get a couple of Academy boys involved

  8. We have signed a really good player whose last act was to ensure we won the cup v our nearest rival in May.

A player who will give us 5 potential starting midfielders who have been over the course and distance and contributed to a league winning campaign and beat our rivals. Mostly young guys who have development potential and some European experience to build on. We also have Holm with development potential post illness and after his (one of my fav moments of last season) tackle on Cantwell I will be keen to see him after a good pre season.

We then see the same sad old chaps come on moaning and whinging about stuff that they have no real idea about.

What miserable bitter lives folk must have.

  9. or for an unknown financial reason it made sense to all parties to have the official singing date as 1st august.

    or personal reasons for paulo.

but sure have a go at the board, like it made any difference to the player/manager/team/

  11. Just a final push and reminder that SPFL Superbru starts back in 2 days.

It is a competition to see who can predict the results of 6 or more SPFL matches in each gameweek of the season from August to May. You get 3 points for predicting an exact score, 1.5 points for being close to an exact score and 1 point for forecasting the correct outcome, home win, draw or away win, but not getting the score right. You get 0 points for an incorrect prediction.

We are only looking for a £10 entry fee this season as it will not be a main charity fund raising vehicle, this year, more a bit of fun. We will still put 50% of monies raised towards the prize fund but winnings will be smaller than previous years.

That is because we will be encouraging all participants to join our Last Man Standing competitions which will be run 3 or 4 times throughout the season and should raise a lot more- details to follow later in the season.

For the next 2 days- the priority is to join the Superbru Pool again- and in due course send your £10 entrance fee to the Walk With Shay account, giving your own name or Superbru moniker so we can monitor payments have been made. Join first- pay later. Encourage any friends and family who are Celtic supporters who may be interested to join in before Saturday at 12.30 pm. Anyone who played last year is enrolled automatically. All other may have to wait a few hours until I am on site and approve their applications.

The site name is Superbru.com- there is an app for phone or PC. Use the “join a pool” option and type in our pool name – Quick News Quinta Sentinels. Use the password inkshoed .We already have 56 members- we are hoping to break 60 again this year so get a move on.

Details of how to pay to the Walk With Shay account are:-.

By cash in person to CRC at Celtic Park (CQN Corner)

    By bank transfer to

    Account name: Walk With Shay

    Account number: 15326765

    Sort code: 80-22-60

    Bank: Bank of Scotland

Ref: Enter your name or moniker (not CQN predictor, as we cannot identify you!)

By paypal to walkwithshay@yahoo.com (please send as gift, so prize money pot is not diminished by paypal charges).

Let’s break the 60 barrier and even aim for 67.

  12. Brendan in the last week has publicly name checked our CEO & CFO re transfers. Just a few days ago he spoke of learning from last summer and bringing in quality.

We’ve a month to go so let’s see how Michael Nicholson and Chris McKay deliver for our most successful manager since Stein.

Absolutely fantastic stuff. And even if he doesn’t sign before Sunday we could always unveil a gigantic banner with all the players partner club has lost…….

Not really into the dissection of phrases but a blind man could see that over the years the board have always failed, when in a position of strength, to push home our advantage over whatever team is playing out of the cesspit in Govan.

  16. Not getting my juices flowing I’m afraid. A decent player, but most definately no the marquee signing we are all expecting.

  19. Let’s just sign the 2,keep the money in the bank, and get embarrassed in Europe yet again, but whatever you do,don’t be asking for improvement in the squad, oh and when it fails, blame the manager.

    Fair point.

Last season doesn’t count as Rodgers only “signed off” the dross we bought.

I can see that. Use of phrases like “a blind man could see” does suggest a disregard for literal meaning.

Anyways for those that are interested:-

The thoughts you create in your own head are your own opinions

The opinions you express that are met with agreement by another poster is a shared opinion.

The opinions you shared become generally held by a majority of Celtic fans is a prevailing view among the opinions held.

Everything I have stated there is factual but, at no stage, did any of the stages of opinion become a FACT

  24. Paul 67,

Football is theatre . Somtimes yes and somrimes no.

You are aware that theatre in this country is in a precarious situation. Entertainment competition eg streaming has hit hard.

Lessons will be learned. An overused, incorrect, insincere phrase much loved by the Establishment.

However in certain context it can ring true.

We need to play entertaining football that makes supporters want more and desperate for the next game.We need this to happen.

Lets not forget a decade ago looking over at big mad covers coveriing the top tier.

We need initiatives to enhance the match day experience. Football without fans is nothing.

There is no viable reason why we cannot play 2 upfront in domestic football. Well apart from not having two forwards which is frankly astonishing given we open the season on Sunday.

Football is a very simple game, score more than the opposition and you win the game. A club like Celtic should always have the tools to do so.

I am all for common sense prudance However we must also equate that money is worthless until you spend it.
