Bernardo and a bit of theatre

236

Football is theatre and good theatrical producers know how to put on a show.  That being the case, Celtic will take the opportunity to give the club a timely boost on the cusp of the opening game of the season by announcing the signing of Paulo Bernardo.  Perhaps our former campaigning Irish striker will even drop by before Sunday.

Celtic have been at this since Jock Stein’s days.  Jock knew that pre-match press conferences were an opportunity to put a spring in the step of players and supporters alike.  Brendan Rodgers’ comment yesterday that Paulo would be signed “within hours” is confirmation that the deal is done, you are just waiting for a bit of theatre.

    Hahahahahahahaha

Just when you think it can’t be more craven and pathetic. I hope all those free tickets are worth it.

  2. I do hope and expect Bernardo to kick on this season, but I feel like the board are misreading the room on this one. Re-signing a squad player from last season it just about getting back to square one, and with the expected departure of O’Riley I really hope they don’t expect him to be, or be accepted to be, a replacement.

There is no viable reason why we cannot play 2 upfront in domestic football. Well apart from not having two forwards which is frankly astonishing given we open the season on Sunday.

    ————————

The main viable reason is Brendan’s long held preference for a 4:3:3 system

Two up front does not guarantee more entertaining football and 4:3:3 does not preclude it. Ange plays 4:3:3 and it was more exciting than BR’s first 6 months back here. There were signs in the USA games of a more expansive style from Celtic but, unfortunately, in my OPINION, that was down to the high defensive line favoured by Chelsea and Man City, that is not practised by any of our SPFL opponents.

Malone Bhoy- squad improvement? Down with that sort of thing…just pay your £700 + for a season ticket, just to stand still, don’t criticise the Board or our transfer ‘policy’ (no laughing at the back), stay at the back of the bus.HH

  6. Great result for Dinamo Kyiv. 9-2 over the two legs v Partizan. Tough match for the huns next Tuesday, albeit in Poland. Forever optimistic that we’ll bring in some additional quality, that the manager wants 🤔

Didn’t someone basically apologise for not spending much last transfer window, whilst hoarding £££s

  7. People who boycott Celtic games for a variety of reasons consider themselves über Celts and decry those of us who go to games as dim Tims, Board Worshippers and worse.

The popular position to take on Celtic media is to seek the victim stool and claim you are bullied by übers of whatever opinion. Übers are the Elite, the Establishment, the Suits, the Deep State and the Lizard People. I would have added Masons to that list but my membership swears me to secrecy.

Agree about attacking style. We seem to believe that we should win every league easily so winning it with style is a must for the fans. Which is fair enough really, 38 games is a long time to watch stodgy attack against defence, especially at home. It makes life more difficult in Europe though, sign a load of players with a view to winning domestic games with style and you’ll end up with a squad no always best suited to getting gritty draws and tight wins in the CL

I’m not sure about the covers on the top tier being because of what happened on the pitch. Our two worst seasons for season book sales were 2012/2013 and 2013/2014 when we got to the last 16 in Europe and had another go in the group stages, for the last time for a while.

SETTING FREE THE BEARS FOR RES. 12 & OSCAR KNOX on 1ST AUGUST 2024 1:03 PM

    Hilarious, rapier like wit.

  11. If I had my way, I’d sign at least 4 more after Bernardo, Miovski, Idah plus Dara O’ Shea would do me plus a left back.

I’d sell Lagerbiele,Kobayashi, & Kwon, sell or loan Liam Shaw who is on last year of contract, ditto with James McCarthy.

Not sure about Yang & Mikey, would like to see Daniel Kelly stay but accept it’s unlikely.

Goes without saying if Matt is sold we need a replacement.

Finally going forward we need to give hope to the talented Academy Bhoys and whenever possible give them a bit of game time with first team.

  12. I’m afraid I had an inkling we were in for more of the same this window when Rodgers changed his tune in May.

At the start of May he spoke about getting players in early to bed them in however at the point we won the league that had changed to we have all summer.

If Rodgers has finally twigged that the policy is just be a little bit better than the best of the rest why should he care ? He will continue to get paid, sure he’ll get it in the neck if we lose a few games but he will be backed by the very people who have constricted him in the first place. In Europe we’ll be embarrassed as usual, everyone will moan for a couple of months until it comes to the business end of the season where we will all unite to hopefully get the team over the line.

We will then carry on as normal, which is an abnormal way to run a club, and the process of endless disappointment will begin again, in that we continue to have a bank balance larger than some small nations

If Rodgers is eventually sacked he will have his contract paid up but if he decides to jump ship the Board will get compensation which they can either give themselves bonuses with or add to Smaug’s ever growing treasure pile.

  13. I think the end of last season proved that 4-3-3 can be very winning and very entertaining, but I do agree about playing 2 up front at times.

I also think that Brendan will look at the team evolving over his 3 years or longer. Any system gets tired and found out and the players need to be challenged.

  14. Pre-season form was excellent 12 goals, 8 coming v quality opposition and defenders, Chelsea paid £80 mill for the CB that Kyogo ran riot with. All this without Bernardo and Idah, and any others in the pipeline, things can only get better, no? por cierto

  15. Although it remains to be seen whether Kyogo is able to play with a second striker.

    So on the one hand…

    From last article…

    “Turkeybhoy on 1st August 2024 10:59 am

As I said last night. Is there any fans out there, that like their clubs Board, hold them in high regard?”

I’d guess St Pauli fans are fairly happy with how their Board runs them. They even resisted a fat corporate takeover last year it’s reported. They have a great brand and ethos that wins friends the world over (like us).

Raith Rovers fans must have been pretty proud of Turnbull Hutton when he put an integrity spanner in the huns spokes? Tony Blooms crew at Brighton seem to be mostly well-regarded

On the bottom line, our suits are doing a justifiable job re profitability. Could be argued that appointing a manager who got us to the CL new format riches was a huge commercial attainment in itself. Why ruin that by spending way more than our goldfish bowl demands you have to kinda thing…

But for fans, pure shillings and pence don’t win over our hearts and minds when we hear the manager say that what’s needed is more power, more quality and less snoozing.

Me? I need to cultivate a bit more faith our Board will really deliver what we – and Brendan – are asking for.

Good afternoon all from the Victoria Bar. Right, ya old duffers, who wants a square go? 🤛👊

  18. sftb

We did quite well at home in our CL Group for that very same reason, albeit that the results could have been better. Outwith those matches Brendan struggled at times to be as effective as Ange going forward due to a slower more laborious build up, one which did not get the best out of Kyogo. That improved towards the latter part of the season with Idah, Forrest and to a lesser extent Kuhn bringing us more options.

I wonder if Brendan has been influenced by Spain’s Euro triumph this summer, not the tiki-taki of bygone days but a modern version of total football, unrelenting to such an extent that the opposition’s tactics were rendered redundant. Idah is more capable of the Morata role than Kyogo but that does not mean there is no place for our best finisher, more a secondary role than heretofore. Forever changes.

  20. I find it hard to believe that any fan gets excited about a signing anymore as you know abput them for weeks, if not months before.

With respect to Bernardo, there are positives to signing him such as him being here before, scoring against the FoD and also taking responsibility in the cup final and trying to make something happen at a key time.

He’s a tidy player but not really want to get too excited about but he’s welcome.

The transfer window is a dreadful watch/read/listen and I struggle to get my head around a deadline of 4 weeks time when matches start on Sunday. How arrogant.

it has created a false market and inflated fees. the agents have become the biggest individuals , more than clubs or players.

people are mere commoditiies, and you should be able to purchase on any given day of the year.

BACK TO BASICS – GLASS HALF FULL @ 10:37 AM,

Yeah! Some great quotes from the Fitbaw Gospel this morning….

    Here’s the full “novice” speil…

“From a personal perspective, I am surprised in a way where I heard somebody saying ‘Brendan Rodgers was going through the motions’ earlier in the season.

“Now, I get to work between half seven and eight o’clock every day of my life. I leave the training ground between half six and seven o’clock at night. And then when I get home, I have my dinner and probably flip on the computer and watch more football.

“Now, if that’s going through the motions, I want to know what every other manager is doing.

“So, from a personal level, I have been treated like a novice since I’ve come back here. Like it’s my first job.

“However, my principle objective is to make sure Celtic win. Part of that is a part of the criticism and I understand that.

“But it’s the mentality of the team that is most important to me, and that mentality you can see from where we were, with injuries, how we progressed, how we stayed unified and together, and how we then get to this point where we are nearly crossing the finishing line.

“And we don’t just want to cross it, we want to sprint over it. We have two games to go, plus a final, and that is our mentality.”

    Hail Hail

Not sure the theatre angle flies in this particular instance Pablo.

    Game is in three days.

I’d prefer a relatively low key announcement today that doesn’t distract from our preparation … with a passing reference to Paolo rejoining his team mates for Sunday.

A section of Celtic fans expected this deal to get done in first week in July.

    Why linger further?

Hanging off the announcement to pre-match?

… is that his views and stances are an exact match for mine. (© various CD sufferers)
