Football is theatre and good theatrical producers know how to put on a show. That being the case, Celtic will take the opportunity to give the club a timely boost on the cusp of the opening game of the season by announcing the signing of Paulo Bernardo. Perhaps our former campaigning Irish striker will even drop by before Sunday.
Celtic have been at this since Jock Stein’s days. Jock knew that pre-match press conferences were an opportunity to put a spring in the step of players and supporters alike. Brendan Rodgers’ comment yesterday that Paulo would be signed “within hours” is confirmation that the deal is done, you are just waiting for a bit of theatre.

Watching the 20km walk.
Got an image in my head of my maw chasing a bus while carrying two bags of messages.

I hear you GGH.
When I watch these guys or gals I routinely think …. I wonder what is the average age at which they get hip replacements.
I wonder if anyone shares Social media with Greg and Liam just to let them know how loved they are by some of the celtic support.
maybe they go to their happy place and count their medals.

Saint Stivs
I would love to see the critics come up with replacement ideas.
Both are massively underrated by their own support. Defitnely not by their teammates from what I hear.
Although Narowki is also hugely well regarded by all involved and I would expect him to get some more game time this season.
The 20km walk leader has been world champion 10 years running.
⬆️ Lol
i pondered a little on our squad, when people say we are standing still.
I look at the back 4 in particular, and then also the rules around home growns in the squad for euro competition.
i look at the scotland team , and cannot convince myself that anyone is any better really than what celtic already have.
i look at taylor and wonder , were robertson and keiren so much better than he can be playing for scotland.
i look at scales versus his aberdeen days.
and i keep coming back to it, they are far better players than given credit for.
as to the canadian bruiser, he would be first on my team sheet every week, made of steel that bhoy.
so how to improve while maintaing a scottish representation, how can we do it ?
lenno miller mibbies, ben doak on loan mibbies, mckenna just doesnt convince me.
but then i think it is the managers job.
also brendans promises, that run in we had, 9 league games, 8 wins, 1 massive draw, 3 goals per game, o’riley on fire, then a cup win,
but some complain about the style of play, try watching it again.
we are magic, and he will make them better still.

If that is true surely they should have been disqualified?!

Agree……..should be for the high jump.
His walking style was mince.
Bernardo played about 20 minutes, in the games after the split

Joe Hart will unfurl the League flag on Sunday.
SAINT STIVS on 1ST AUGUST 2024 3:29 PM
I think Taylor is undervalued. He missed a few games about February and our attacking threat was diminished. He adds an extra man in midfield when he comes inside which can confuse the opposition midfield as they do not know who to pick up. Sure he lacks height but he’s tenacious in the tackle.
As for Scales, due to a combination of Carter Vickers being missing for almost half a season and Rodgers not fancying the two centre half’s, I would go as far to say we would not have won the league if he was not there.
Having said all that we shouldn’t be targeting backups for these guys but players that are better than them. In that way we force them to improve and the team/squad gets better. That goes for every position and player we have. No one should be exempt from the evolution of the team or club in general.
That also goes for the Board, if people have been there too long or holding the club back then they need replaced.

magnificent.
Glad we’ve signed Bernardo permanently
Time will tell but I think there is an effective player there.
He had a four game purple patch in December when we were struggling.
His contribution led to cup final being won
Other than that he was fairly neat and hard working but didn’t stand out much for me.
He’s still young so, if Brendan wants him, that’ll do me.
Ideally he’ll make a bigger contribution this year – we absolutely cannot rely as extensively on the so called three automatic midfield picks.
Bernardo as fourth man is fine by me but, IMHO, we also beed a very solid fifth guy in there?
Iwata? Holm? Another signing? I’m not sure.
PS – happy with Paolo but, in truth, am more happy at the suggestion we got him for £2.4m less than was previously mooted.
That’s the equivalent of two years wages for a biggish signing.

Big Joe, is that official?

Where did you see that about Bernardo? My poor web skills mean I can’t find it anywhere.

I fully expected that both Bernardo and Idah would sign for us on a permanent basis, so the ‘signings’ don’t move us any further forward in our need to improve for CL football. I feel we are now a better team than last year because we have a world class leader. All of the bhoys are better players than they were 12 months ago. So, while that means we will sweep all before us in the SPL, there’s still a massive chasm between our level and the level needed to get into the CL last 16. I trust that Brendan has set his sights on bringing in the quality we need to close the gap.
Many of the comments on the blog re the Board, signings, and strategy are beyond ridiculous. I would suggest that no-one on here has any idea what goes on behind the scenes. Bringing top quality players to Scotland must be incredibly difficult. Signing players like Joe Hart, and competing in America with the top teams in World football, helps our brand and we need to keep doing this stuff. But, we’re not going to be able to sign established world class players. If we can get 2 or 3 experienced pro’s who have been there and done that with other clubs, then that is the best we can hope for. These players are likely late 20’s early 30’s with top league experience and who are surplus to requirements at their current clubs. The other option is a loan deal for an upcoming talent who can’t get a game in their club because of the existing talent there. This presents it’s own problems of high wages and wild expectations from our support that we can afford to buy them at the end of their loan. Let’s see what August brings. I am confident Brendan will have this team in much better shape this season regardless of who we bring on board.
This Board think we button up the back, trying to unveil Bernardo as a marquee signing before Sunday’s game
EMERALDBEE \O/ A DOUBLE NINER!! @ 4:43 PM,
Brendan Rodgers mentioned it in an interview with Sky yesterday.
MNCELT @ 5:15 PM,
Good post, couple wee things I’d disagree with but now is not the time for knit picking
Was good to hear Brendan state in that Sky interview he was going for Europe after Christmas.
Hail Hail
!!BADA BING!! @ 5:24 PM,
Hope our manager hasn’t ruined the surprise!?
Hail Hail
EmaraldBee – cheers.
I’ve not seen formal confirmation but it looks as done as it can be.
Mncelt – good post. Respect.
Neither the bedwetters nor the happy clappers know what is going on.
Same goes for those fans in neither camp
Same goes for the public rent-a-gobs, ignorant SMSM hacks or ex-players turned pundits.
Personally I can live without the insider knowledge.
CORKCELT on 1ST AUGUST 2024 1:27 PM
Very similar to what Brendan Rodgers wants for his squad.
We are only allowed to loan one player to another SPL side but I’m sure there’s a few in the exit door to be loaned outwith, including Maik Nawrocki who got injured within minutes of the start of the season at lesser Hampden.
Thanks CHAIRBHOY and B2B.
Just wondered (and hoped).😀

Many posts on here seem to take it as a given that none of us rate Greg Taylor.
I do rate him and am perfectly happy with him as an attacking full-back…..in the SPL.
His style doesn`t work so well in Europe but that could be levelled at our right- backs as well.
We are up one goalie on last year and down 2 strikers if Bernardo signs tomorrow.
No opinion just facts

Three strikers if you include Rocco Vata who Brendan said was lined up.
