Bernardo and a bit of theatre

236

Football is theatre and good theatrical producers know how to put on a show.  That being the case, Celtic will take the opportunity to give the club a timely boost on the cusp of the opening game of the season by announcing the signing of Paulo Bernardo.  Perhaps our former campaigning Irish striker will even drop by before Sunday.

Celtic have been at this since Jock Stein’s days.  Jock knew that pre-match press conferences were an opportunity to put a spring in the step of players and supporters alike.  Brendan Rodgers’ comment yesterday that Paulo would be signed “within hours” is confirmation that the deal is done, you are just waiting for a bit of theatre.

  4. Good morning all from The Garngad current Temperature 13 degrees and cloudy.

    Welcome back Paulo.

We are still weaker than last year, need a tall LB, CB and striker.

    Let’s see what unfolds.

Being a master in body language and psychology I think by what Brendan is saying he is frustrated.

Shame on Celtic powers that be.

As jobs would say 2 more sleeps to we get our fix.

Sounds good. Looked it up and it is easy to find. I’ll either be on my own or have the wife and daughter in tow.

BTW my mother was Grace and my daughter is named after her.

  9. Not quite sure who was behind yesterday’s narrative that we were doing due diligence on a midfielder(s) in the event MOR leaves. It featured prominently on SSN so there was a clear intent to get that story into the public domain.

It certainly wouldn’t be BR. What about due diligence on the other positions which require a significant upgrade for the CL, or are we just going into that competition to hoover up the dough.

  10. Big Irish Celt

1st day of August.. £1 million spend on a back up keeper… Took in around £5 million this far in the window. No out field player bought.. Squad weaker than last year, League starts Sunday. 30 days to sort it out with 8 CL games to be played…

  11. I watched Owen Beck several times .

    He was unimpressive.

I am dismayed that we seem to no be casting our net ,very wide ,this season.

    TT

  12. Greg Taylor far better player than Owen Beck who is ok ,watching the Motherwell v Partick Thistle ,Harry Milne the Jags left back looks a decent player ,

  13. We will not get a better back than Greg Taylor.Great performer for us.We just need someone to give him a breather. The kid was excellent in the States.Get him in as back up.We will lose more of the better ones if we dont.Give him a try for the season. There will be plenty of minutes available.

  14. Sutton1888,

The 8 CL games start middle of September. We are one player short from last season, who was on loan .Waiting hopefully for his return. We have 2 excellent keepers now.Only one last year.Bernardo is now OUR player,so not a great deal weaker than last season

Oops, and 30 days of the window left. All this angst about what might or might not happen.A waste of good angst !!!!!!!.

  15. We have seen recently, we don’t have the pace, strength or height to compete in European football, if we go into another campaign with Ralston, Welsh,Taylor, Scales in a back 4,what do you think will happen?

  16. TB- The 4 I mentioned should be subs/squad players at best,we have seen this movie too many times,to go into this campaign with any confidence, we need another CB and a LB

  17. TB- yes,I changed my mind after reading Willie Miller’s assessment of him,he knows him well, and I respect his opinions on football. Brendan tried to get him last time round, and I’m surprised he’s not got him by now.

  18. Jim Craig the guest of honour to unfurl the League Champions flag at Celtic Park on Sunday

  19. Rangers manager Philippe Clement has signed a contract extension until the summer of 2028.

The 50-year-old Belgian joined the Ibrox club in October, winning the League Cup and finishing as runner-up in the Premiership and Scottish Cup.

“I have fallen in love with the club, with the fans, the stadium and with the city,” Clement told the club website.

So now we know why the renovations to Ibrox are taking so long, it’s a labour of love, Clement is doing the work himself. Although the down side is he’ll need until 2028 to finish it, hence the contract extension!
