Best of luck Brendan and thanks for the trebles

914

If I’m being magnanimous, Brendan made no secret of the fact that he wanted to return to the English Premier League.  When he was here, he won everything available to him domestically and proved that you can please all of the people all of the time.  We want managers to be ambitious, honest and successful and that’s what we got.

It rankles that his timing was so poor, a day before we visit Tynecastle on league duty and five days before we visit Easter Road in the Cup.  Brendan saw little compensation in Moussa Dembele’s success here, or ambition, when he engineered his exit at a bad time for the manager, the same is true now.  Celtic knew nothing of this before yesterday and have a major job on their hands to ensure the quest for the treble treble remains on course.

Neil Lennon is likely to be announced as interim manager.  We are fortunate to have as an experienced hand available.  If anyone knows how to take a Celtic team to Edinburgh, it’s Neil.  Plans for next season will continue in the background, but Neil will be asked to deliver the treble and nothing will be allowed to distract him or the players from that objective.

I have heard from a few CQN’ers who are surprised today, but we should know better.  This is football, managers and players are highly paid professionals, all the badge thumping in the world does not change that.  Exceptions are rare.

Best of luck to you, Brendan, and thanks for the trebles.  You could have held out for better than Leicester, but there’s every chance you’ll keep them in the division for many years.

As someone posted this morning he’ll no doubt keep it for his memoirs.

He’s has the timing of Judas no matter how you slice it IMHO and it will always underpin his unique tenure.

Feel especially for his players, how do they react to the manager dumping them?

  2. ‘Celtic knew nothing of this before yesterday.’ Don’t they listen to the radio at the weekend?

Fact is though, when I’ve gone to Celtic Park, Hampden, Murrayfield, Dens, Rugby Park, you name it, I’ve gone to support Celtic – not Brendan Rodgers’ Celtic, not Ronny Deila’s Celtic, not Neil Lennon’s Celtic – just Celtic. That will never change.

Chris Sutton called BR leaving on Sunday morning, so I’m not buying the board only knew of these developing events yesterday

So nothing to do with his falling out with those in the background at Celtic and his perceived lack of backing in the transfer market?

I’m sure the appeal of the PL and money does constitute part of his decision, but I’m equally as sure that the above also does.

  5. Brendan left when it suited him. Others before have done exactly the same.

I’m disappointed that he didn’t see the season out, poor show in my opinion.

The concern now is that he comes back and tries to cherry pick our best players. no doubt at cut-down prices.

I don’t think Neil Lennon is the future for Celtic, but his recent actions indicate that maybe he, and others, were aware this was coming. If that is the case then I guess Neil the man for the foreseeable future.

    Let’s get behind the manager

I was heartbroken about Tommy Burns.

“It’s the business strategy of the Club; has been for years and will be for years to come; anyone who thinks they will change is deluded. ”

I agree it’s the approach they are taking, but I’m contesting that it is wrong.

Oldco had 10 years of fiscal mismanagement before the edifices was torn down. Celtic are not comparable. We are clearly too far to one end of the spectrum. £50m in the bank and our CEO receiving a higher bonus than our largest transfer fee in January.

I doubt it will change but it’s clearly wrong.

  8. Fuming with The Board and Brendan in equal measure. Both sides have acted like petulant children in my opinion. Something definitely smells with just 11 games to go.

    Until we meet again…

    Keep the Faith!

    Hail Hail!

  9. I didn’t go over the top when Brendan arrived – I should have. He has been incredible for us. He leaves us with a very healthy squad – full of young guns and improvements for almost every player individually.

I’m not going to over the top about his departure. So long and thanks for all the fish. And I do wish him good luck too.

My BIG worry is that come the summer transfer window – who will he come back and tempt away? Tierney (I’ll cry), McGregor (I’ll cry), Boyata (I know he’s going anyway), Benkovic (I know). Maybe Sinclair and Hayes (yes I know). Heck why not all of the team Rogic, Christie, Ajer, and so.

Maybe we will end up with a Celtic team playing in the EPL after all.

  10. Professional Interim Manager Graeme Murty, specialising in distressed, post-departure crisis gigs, is currently available…

  11. THE HANDS CANT HIT @ 12.50

Thats now a two way streeted debate, maybe we’ll get rid of the duds in his backroom team? and offload Congleton, Compper and his other epic signing fails.

Celtic or Celtic supporting Rodgers?, the new manager of Leicester

  12. Supersutton

If BR becomes Leicester manager I would be most worried about him taking French Eddy from us.

  13. The only thing I find deeply concerning about this is the timing – given other possible roles that could come up in 5 months time – is the Leicester roe really that good… if he’d say went to Spurs in the summer that might have been accepted – from his point of view maybe if the stayed till the summer he’d have to stay for the 9 and then 10 in a row – he may hope Lenny wins tomorrow night and wins at least the league otherwise I can imagine there being a not entirely favourable Life Of Brendan song in the works….

On the Leicester situation – on one dimension it seems straighforward – in terms of Club sizes our league is probably lucky to be compared to League one.. so on that argument it makes sense – to to abandon Legend Status by potentially delivering the 10…. for that role

On Brendan himself – can we really be that surprised – Loyalty has hardly been his strong suit – and as a manager I thought he was a strange fit – he was MARQUEE but did we have the resources to play open pureist marquee football against teams with several times our budgets… not sure what the young lads develop from getting duffed 7-1 by PSG et all,

So all in all if someone more shrewd come in I think itll be a better fit, but we need a strong internal exam before long….

  14. It’s at times like this I wish I was back in the early eighties as a kid watching a Celtic team, yes full of flaws, but great to watch , with a genuine legend in charge and at least four other legends in the team. Simpler days, sometimes I really hate football, yes it can be magical but too often it’s a curse .

Oh , and back then that really was a board to moan about.

  15. Best of Luck?? Not from this Tim.

First sign of a EPL club flashing its knickers and off he runs.

Don’t let the door hit you on the arse on the way out.

BR was not perfect, as evidenced by some European results and he did make a few poor signings (which manager hasn’t?).

However, when taken in sum, the good BR did vastly outweighs any negatives. He turned the club around. He made players who were near-valueless into £10m+ players. He ushered in unheard of success both on and off the field.

I have always doubted the “well run club” mantra; our success under BR was due to BR IMO. The mantra will now be put to the test, but I won’t hold my breath that it proves accurate.

  18. Beamishismypint on

The manager got shafted last summer and wasn’t willing to suck it up. The Christmas window signings, comments etc. showed that he was off. Honestly losing your best striker on the last day, getting Emilio as full back cover when he wasn’t good enough a few years ago… The strategic mess up led to somebody who had he not had links to us, would never have taken over from Delia. In fairness if you win everything that you can and there’s money in the bank, should you not expect a shot at moving up a level in terms of resources. Brendan rates himself and wasn’t willing to suck it up.

BR — Never got the sainthood.

He is a good coach but still learning.

He needs L plates if he makes it to Europe.

However he has done a lot and got us playing some good football.

If he goes, he goes — a dog barks and the caravan moves on.

Everything is now about the future — what happens next is the only concern.

We will know by tomorrow night — no lack of focus so we have no excuses.

We have TW and OB to look forward to.

We have ScS coming back into form and OE learning his game at a fair rate of knots.

We have EH, KA and KT available to be competitive in a charged atmosphere.

We have DB, JS and NB to add a bit of class and quality.

And we have JF to get his finger out and show us what he has got.

We might get more than we have bargained for but he is well worth the risk.

If we can find the appetite we will win.

  21. Given that the Evening Times has not only reported that BR has left Celtic to take over at Leicester, but they have also bragged about being the first to report it, isn’t it a little odd that there is absolutely nothing about this momentous news on the official Leicester City website?…

Looks like farewell Brendan (TBC of course)

If so, he is, by my reckoning, the 16th manager during my lifetime.

The big man stands alone. Brendan was in the top three of the rest so has my thanks.

Suspect two main factors in the decision – relationship with board and despair at the amateurism in Scottish football.

Would love to know the weightings of each but suspect we’ll never find out.

Giving up Celtic for (by historical achievement) the SIXTH most successful club in the MIDLANDS seems strange to me.

BTW – Paul, I think there is an obvious question here …….

Why didn’t the club simply refuse permission?

    Hail hail

  24. Dearie me. A few days ago Brendan was the chosen one leading us to 10IAR. Now he is a Judas. Nothing more fickle than a Celtic fan it seems. I guess no one else has been in a job they initially enjoy but where over time their position has been made utterly untenable by continual interference by senior management despite promises made to you prior to your accepting the position and despite your trying to meet / negotiate a ‘common ground’ with senior management . I know I have.

Brendan has left for no other reason than the board have not even attempted to match his ambitions and have undermined his position as manager. Proof – well how about the signing the young Aussie from Man City or the Jan singing of Sheved? On Both occasions Brendan denied any knowledge of the player or signing negotiations. Board sycophants will undoubtedly point to the £9 mill spent on Eddy (Still an alleged figure) but fail to mention our net spend on players is negative.

  25. Right now I’d like Leicester to get on and announce they’ve poached our manager. Get it done with.

Interim manager announced shortly after that at Paradise.

There’s no time for messing around. I’d have Neil in the dugout tomorrow if at all possible.

3 points tomorrow night will be a kick in the stones to everyone who deserves it. As usual those of us who genuinely have Celtic in our very DNA, who pay for the privilege of watching the club our very forbears built, will be the ones to step up and drive the team on.

Circle the wagons time. No pasaran
