Best of luck Brendan and thanks for the trebles

914

If I’m being magnanimous, Brendan made no secret of the fact that he wanted to return to the English Premier League.  When he was here, he won everything available to him domestically and proved that you can please all of the people all of the time.  We want managers to be ambitious, honest and successful and that’s what we got.

It rankles that his timing was so poor, a day before we visit Tynecastle on league duty and five days before we visit Easter Road in the Cup.  Brendan saw little compensation in Moussa Dembele’s success here, or ambition, when he engineered his exit at a bad time for the manager, the same is true now.  Celtic knew nothing of this before yesterday and have a major job on their hands to ensure the quest for the treble treble remains on course.

Neil Lennon is likely to be announced as interim manager.  We are fortunate to have as an experienced hand available.  If anyone knows how to take a Celtic team to Edinburgh, it’s Neil.  Plans for next season will continue in the background, but Neil will be asked to deliver the treble and nothing will be allowed to distract him or the players from that objective.

I have heard from a few CQN’ers who are surprised today, but we should know better.  This is football, managers and players are highly paid professionals, all the badge thumping in the world does not change that.  Exceptions are rare.

Best of luck to you, Brendan, and thanks for the trebles.  You could have held out for better than Leicester, but there’s every chance you’ll keep them in the division for many years.

I’m unhappy about the manner in which he leaves. But he was a great success.

Let’s see how well our masters of the universe in the board room do now. Are we at the apogee of our success both financial and on the field? Time will tell.

Over to you, Pedro. Go earn your £2.5m p/a – you are after all paid like an EPL executive even though everyone else at the club is on Scottish wages.

  2. Say 40 points to avoid relegation from the EPL – Leicester currently have 32 points with about 11 games left to play. Should be adequate at this stage, however their recent results have been woeful.

I guess they weren’t taking any chances whatsoever when it came to their survival in that money pit.

Scumbag move from him regardless how much that fool Lawwell was antagonising him.

Always said that character doesn’t know the first thing about football.

He’s funked it up manys the time before.

Should have been sacked after the 7 point lead squandering and the subsequent dead club 3 in a row.

    Egotistical mug.

Just had a chance to read the article

Ouch – wee sting in the tail there…

  4. Just on forum shocked with 11 games to go.vacationing in aruba just now should have waited till home in toronto

So much for big celtic man.

At the end of summer 2018 I wrote that come the following summer only BR or PL would be in situ, not both.

Whilst this comes as no surprise, it is no less disappointing. Only time will tell, but I fear Celtic have snatched defeat from the jaws of a history making victory.

I was always wary of BR’s true Celtic credentials. For me, if he really knew the club and its environment he would not have gone public with his displeasure at PL and, as I also said at the time, invited the fox (SMSM) in to the hen house. That was unforgivable.

Having said that, BR was an exceptional Celtic manager and coach who was a class apart from anyone else in the Scottish game and I think it unlikely he’ll be replaced by someone of equal stature and calibre.

Back in the summer I thought it was PLwho should go. A manager should always work within what is financially sustainable, but my suspicion was BR was not looking to risk the farm. Improvement in any walk of life requires you to push the boundaries and move beyond your comfort zone and in this instance I felt PL was acting as a hindrence to progress.

With Rogers now gone, Celtic need to be very careful they don’t start going backwards.

  6. Oglach, its the “he’s one of our own part” that rather rankles, if he’d been a Dr jo OR a Wim who got brought in from no-where and claimed no prior affiliation to us then itd be par for the course

But how many of us would give up a fair shot at 10 in a row for Leicester Survival….if this was 2 months ago and he was heading to Man U then at least there would be something understandable…..

  7. mullet and co 2 on

Bain worth £2m now and in with a shout of Scotland no 1

    Tierney still worth over £20m

Ajer £6m plus and with game time in the same bracket if not better than Tierney

    McGregor £15m plus

    Ntcham £10m plus

    Forrest £10m plus

    Edouard £10m plus

    Christie £5m plus

    Rogic £10m plus

Assets and lots of them. How do you square the requirement for a right back, at least one centre half, and a striker by the summer? Oh and a permanent manager.

With Rodgers compensation there should be enough in the bank to cover two seasons worth of Champions league failure before you count player sales!

  8. Oglach – I get it. I do. I agree to a degree with your assessment of the board.

What I don’t get is why now? If it was no longer tolerable then it was that way in the summer, in January when the window was open or immediately after it shut. He could have walked then. Unlike me (I don’t presume to know your financial business but I suspect you’ll be the same) he has the cash to not have to work for a while until a job comes up. So why not go in January if it was intolerable?

Unless PL was also interfering with team selection, telling him to not book extra nights in hotels after away games or some other such day to day thing then he has no grounds for saying the job was intolerable. It wouldn’t stand up in sn employment tribunal. He’d be asked why he didn’t walk after the last intolerable act.

The team has something of its swagger back of late, things seemed ok. So why now?

The only answer I have is that he was offered the job now. Maybe told it wouldn’t be there in the summer. So he leaves. Now.

And for me as a Celtic supporter, that’s poor form from a guy paid handsomely to lead the club we love to yet more success between now and May.

Let the fire sale begin! Everything must go! Except Celtic fans’ loyalty. That is unconditional no matter how much we get shafted by the masters of the universe.

  11. About two years ago, Brendan talked about leaving a legacy for Celtic to build on. However, at the time, his comments were heavily guarded and he left them very open. I was never assured that he would see through a five year period which is probably what it takes to leave a legacy.

Here are some excerpts from an article on 12 March 2017:

“Brendan Rodgers spoke of his desire to build a legacy for both Celtic and Scottish football, but insisted he might not be given the time to see all his work come to fruition.”

“He said: ‘The plan for my time here is just to do the very best that I can. Whether that’s for one year or another four or five years, I want to raise the standard that hopefully pushes the club to the maximum.

‘I’m on a one-year (rolling) contract, so you can’t predict a manager’s stay. You can’t say how long you are going to be here. On a Saturday you walk on water and on a Monday you’re the devil.

‘A manager would love to say that you can stay and build something, but modern society doesn’t really allow you to do that.

‘So for all you’d like to say this or that, you can only promise that while you are here that you do the very best that you can.

‘My obligation is for a legacy here. So what do I want to leave?

‘That compared to the first day I walked in, the club is in a better place than when I walk out.

‘Can I develop players? Can I influence players to play the game in a different way to what they maybe thought before? If that spreads to helping the Scottish game, then great.

‘And, hopefully, I can bring some sort of profile to a game that everyone was starting to ridicule.’

The 44-year-old added: ‘Hopefully, you can see developments in what I am trying to do here at Celtic. You have to keep moving to be successful and it’s not reliant on what the other one is doing.’

If Brendan does leave now, his contribution will certainly be remembered as part of our history but it falls short of leaving a legacy.

  12. Of course Celtic “knew” about this before yesterday. What he’s really saying is that leicester only mad an official approach yesterday. Till they do that it’s speculation and Chris Sutton is just guessing ffs.

When Celtic are officially saying that they’ve allowed him to speak to leicester and we’re being told on here that it’s a done deal, obituary already written, then something is rotten with our club that they deliver the news on here. Feckin disgraceful.

It’s a fickle game THE HANDS CANT HIT WHAT THE EYES CANT SEE.

Fact is we are rolling in it and have dramatically reduced the wages with Brendan and team going.

8 points clear. £40 odd million in the bank. Season ticket money to come. Turnover likely to be north of £80m now despite Champions League failure. (27.5m income from Dembele and Rodgers team going)

For the right person it’s a great time to take over.

The tendency to seek precision in predictions is fraught with dangers of failure.

All those who predicted BR would go last summer or this summer were proved wrong in their timing.

But many will stand by their reasons for believing why it would be so.

Leaving halfway, or in the run-in, of a season, suggests that the pull factors of Leicester outweigh the push factors of Celtic (or Peter Lawwell).

Time for the body language experts and side-of-th-mouth interpretors to step up to the plate and tell us what is really going on.

    HOT SMOKED @ 9:36 AM,

    It’s this…

Underachieving EPL Clubs, at least in the mind of their supporters &/or owners, will sack their managers.

They will attempt to lure away Brendan away from Celtic.

Obviously Brendan’s vision for Celtic is very different from the Boards value “plan”, so a project down south and let’s face it, he always said he intended to return to England, must be far more tempting than it was during May’s celebration.

Prescience, body language or stating the bleed’n obvious:(((

    @ MULLET AND CO 2 on 26TH FEBRUARY 2019 1:28 PM

Yes, but if you are the new manager how much of that will you see? After all, your predecessor was annoyed by the lack of transfers.

On the face of it we should be strengthening from a position of strength, but Celtic don’t like to do that.

  18. Pivotal week – come Sunday where will we be? Still 8 points clear and in the semis? Good chance Sevco will be out of the Scottish Cup . The sun might rise on Monday.

  19. Leicester City 2019/ 2020 defensive signings Boyata & Tireney. Now I bet you wouldn’t get very good odds on that happening at the bookies.

  20. THE HANDS CANT HIT @ 1.14

Can’t argue with that, it’s still just millionaires squabbling as posted in summer 2018, when Brendan, first spat the dummy for the cameras.

Blaming your least favourite millionaire about running Celtic is a pure waste of time, Celtic are infinite and there is no mechanism for change, other than of normal employees like Brendan Rodgers.

No doubt he’ll say its about ‘ambition’ thats what they all say, there are some brilliant posts on CQN the fans that are left with the job of going to Tynecastle, some of them only just home from Valencia.

Its a crying shame, and ‘his’ timing despite his unique days since 2016 is utterly disgraceful for the fans, his players and the club, if he offered to remain till summer I’d be happy to know we instead showed him the door.

I don’t expect anything other than customary Celtic silence.

  21. Hrvatski Jim on 26th February 2019 1:24 pm

Agreed, no legacy just a short fun history.

Let’s move on and remember that we are the only ones who truly care about the success of the club, everyone at Celtic Park is an employee no more no less.

He is no longer the Celtic manager and as such I no longer have any interest in him or his future, enjoy mid table mediocrity.

  22. The Blogger.

You can only progress from a solid base and lottsa money. There was a wee Celtic earthquake today which was the context of the post.

I mean the kind Leicester get for nothing from being in the EPL.

Maybe we could get Mourinho, that would be ambitious.

  23. Leigh Griffiths will be delighted at Brendan leaving tho. He went from a 40 goal a season striker to permanent sub. I hope the wee man gets well and gets another chance to show what he can do.

  24. Chavez -With the current striking options, I can’t see Leigh getting a game before next season (assuming he is ready to play anytime soon). OE, Weah, Burke and the invisible man Bayo provide plenty of options for the next 10 weeks or so.

I’d be delighted to see Leigh back in pre-season training come June time.

  25. Auldheid – I mentioned earlier that Mourinho stated yesterday that his priority was to be happy in his next job. With zillions in the bank, maybe he’d fancy a wee shot at coaching a team that plays attacking football for a change :)

  26. BEAMISHISMYPINT on 26TH FEBRUARY 2019 1:06 PM

The manager got shafted last summer and wasn’t willing to suck it up. The Christmas window signings, comments etc. showed that he was off. Honestly losing your best striker on the last day, getting Emilio as full back cover when he wasn’t good enough a few years ago… The strategic mess up led to somebody who had he not had links to us, would never have taken over from Delia. In fairness if you win everything that you can and there’s money in the bank, should you not expect a shot at moving up a level in terms of resources. Brendan rates himself and wasn’t willing to suck it up.

    ———————————————————————————————————————————————-

Sorry but some history revisionism going on here. He most definitely did not “lose” his best striker on the last day. It was his decision and his alone that Dembele could leave. The day before the club publicly rejected Lyon’s offer stating it was too low and didn’t leave the club with sufficient time to find a replacement. Dembele then threw his toys out of the pram and Rodgers summoned him to a meeting. along with some “senior” players. Rodgers then decided he could go and off he went. He didn’t have to do this but he did for reasons that still haven’t been explained. All this stuff is in the public records but let’s not pretend he was forced by the board to sell Dembele and this is coming from someone who is not a natural supporter of the PLC board.

  27. OGLACH

I think Boyata would be a reasonable bet to Leicester.

But would be surprised if Tierney signed for them.

I have stated on here a few times that KT’s game has redressed under Brendan.

His coaching direction while well meaning was detrimental to KT’s natural instincts.

He went from being a tenacious defender and marauder to being tentative with less attacking threat.

KT will probably go to the EPL as we like to cash in on asset’s but i doubt it would be to Leicester.

  28. Deniabhoy – you’re probably right. Still, Leigh is one of the unluckiest players around considering his previous record.

  29. Compensation deal struck. It’s now finalised:

“Brendan Rodgers has agreed to become the new manager of Leicester City.

The Premier League club have agreed compensation fee with Celtic – understood to be £6million – and Rodgers will be confirmed as Claude Puel’s successor.

It follows a whirlwind day of discussions in the East Midlands after Celtic reluctantly gave Rodgers permission to enter talks with the Premier League side.

The 46-year-old is now set to be confirmed by the Foxes with his first game in charge this weekend against Watford.

And he is set to take Chris Davies, Kolo Toure and Glen Driscoll with him.”

  30. Still at a loss here, even Big Judith not warming the cockles……will be interesting to gauge how the players feel, let down by BR,or resentment towards Lawwell?

  31. Brendan rates himself and wasn’t willing to suck it up.

No, and certainly not when he could get much more money in England at a wee diddy club at the first time of asking.

  32. Res 12, Boardroom Squables between manager, Referees, Laptop Loyal, we have finally imploded So Sad
