Best of luck Brendan and thanks for the trebles

914

If I’m being magnanimous, Brendan made no secret of the fact that he wanted to return to the English Premier League.  When he was here, he won everything available to him domestically and proved that you can please all of the people all of the time.  We want managers to be ambitious, honest and successful and that’s what we got.

It rankles that his timing was so poor, a day before we visit Tynecastle on league duty and five days before we visit Easter Road in the Cup.  Brendan saw little compensation in Moussa Dembele’s success here, or ambition, when he engineered his exit at a bad time for the manager, the same is true now.  Celtic knew nothing of this before yesterday and have a major job on their hands to ensure the quest for the treble treble remains on course.

Neil Lennon is likely to be announced as interim manager.  We are fortunate to have as an experienced hand available.  If anyone knows how to take a Celtic team to Edinburgh, it’s Neil.  Plans for next season will continue in the background, but Neil will be asked to deliver the treble and nothing will be allowed to distract him or the players from that objective.

I have heard from a few CQN’ers who are surprised today, but we should know better.  This is football, managers and players are highly paid professionals, all the badge thumping in the world does not change that.  Exceptions are rare.

Best of luck to you, Brendan, and thanks for the trebles.  You could have held out for better than Leicester, but there’s every chance you’ll keep them in the division for many years.

  1. Brendan’s timing sucks to high heavens.

That’s his call. Those are his consequences.

    Leaves a bad taste.

  2. AULDHEID @ 1:43 PM,

Well yes, it’s very difficult if like most of us you look at the World through green tinted specs…

My bug bear really was not that at all. We could see fholk very much in denial even this morning.

No, it was more to do with fholk who I believe were in the know but wanted to do Brendan down.

Now, there’s always two sides to these type of scenarios and while I’m firmly in the Brendan Rodgers should have been backed camp, the fact is there are arguments both ways. I understand that, yet why the personal attacks on BR, he didn’t deserve them IMO…

This BR-e×it stuff really is tuff to deal with…

    Hail Hail

  3. Timing of Rodgers departure is woeful, can we move on now.. there is a League Championship to win and a Scottish Cup that would give us an historic Triple treble. He’s gone not any 1 person is bigger than Celtic Football Club

You’re normally a very sensible poster too, pick yourself up.

My comments and personal feelings which are replicated and mirrored by Celtic supporters all over the world wide web as I type might not be your cup of tea, but not deplorable unless you have allegiances that others don’t have for any ex manager, and not the club as a whole?

Not sure what was deplorable maybe his pointy shoes?, definately him timing, and decision to walk away from his players the support, and the club on the very eve of a game.

£65,000 a week an impending unprecedented treble challenge, for him the supporter since he was an amoeba, would have been enough Shirley? for any man to have hung around and put up with everybody’s pet hate Peter until summer?

Not just lacking in the class we all thought he had, but even lacking in decency and decorum.

    Enjoy your nite

I’m going to wait and see what if anything comes out in the wash before I judge the guy.

Arguably our best manager since Stein . He deserves a level of respect that’s missing in a lot of posts today imo.

It’s fine if you disagree but that’s how I feel.

  6. Brendan Rodgers is a snake. He spoke of how he loves it here and that he was very happy. He then leaves for a bottom half EPL team on the day before an important game at Tynecastle. He has been lining this up since the summer. Dembele lifted the veil. Rodgers was going to China for the money. The club talked him round and he stayed until the next big offer arrived.

He will never win anything at Leicester. Why would a celtic man go to Leicester? Why would he walk out at this key time.

We need to pull together and win this League

  7. Quite sad when i logged on to the Internet thing for the first time in a couple of day’s to see that Brendan has decided that mid-table mediocrity in the EPL is more appealing then becoming a REAL legend at Celtic Park. Especially for somone who often stated that this was his “dream job”.

Trying to keep emotions in check and not let loose with a verbal volley in his direction with the way he’s conducted his departure, and the timing of it.

One thing is sure. Celtic will still be Celtic tomorrow, and nothing, or no-one will ever change that for me.

Thanks for the Invincible season, thanks for the 7 trophies on the trot, and some magical memories ( and some not so memorable ), but you blew it…..

“Brendan Rodgers here for 7 and a bit in a row” . Doesn’t sound quite so good, does it Brendan.

  8. Scenario in my head is that Brendan had told the powers that be that he was leaving at the end of the season.

Leicester came in now and Celtic were happy to get £6 million for a manager who would be leaving in a couple of months anyway….anyone?

  9. THE HANDS CANT HIT WHAT THE EYES CANT SEE / OGLACH

Sorry guys I disagree. What I’m saying is that it’s unprofessional to walk away at this crucial point – the day before a critical game and a few days before a cup game. Oil industry I can’t comment on but in technology, if I decided to walk out the day before a big implementation I’d have no reputation left. You simply do not let people down in that manner. As I say, disappointed.

  10. If he had left in the summer we’d all be complaining that he had left us in the lurch regarding CL qualifiers.

Lenny is more than capable of steering us to the triple treble. Players more likely to up their game than down tools in the short term as they try to impress the new boss and justify their place.

For the loan players and out of contract players nothing much has changed. They’ll all be leaving in a few short weeks.

Business as usual. There are trophies to be won and huns to be skelped.

Well , if ‘keeping them in the division’ is what floats your boat……..

The English equivalent of a Motherwell.

He might think it’s the right thing for him but he has monumentally failed to do the right thing by countless thousands of people whose high regard for him will have vanished overnight.

  12. I suppose there will come a time in the future when I can reflect on many great games and occasions that BR gave us, but not today. This sucks.

To walk away at his point in a season, when so many are pitted against the club in a determined effort to stop 8 never mind 10? When we are looking at a possibility of an unprecedented triple treble?. To completely disregard the tens of thousands who turn up every week to watch Celtic?

Nah! That really lacks class, it’s not the actions of a Celtic man, regardless of what might or might not be happening behind the scenes.

Good luck and thank you Brendan, but your legend status is revoked in my eyes.

  13. Brace yourselves bhoys and get ready for seeing Brendan paraded as new Leicester manager. It will feel like the most ugly and sickning moment since you know who was paraded at Ibrox in 1989……yes it will be that bad.

I feel a bit sick inside thinking about watching what is to come.

    FEEL SICK

  14. Neil Lennon, will come in on an interim basis.

If he secures 8 i.a.r then he deserves the adulation and accolades that come from that.

But lets be abundantly clear about one thing. Neil Lennon isn’t the right man for the job, long term.

And you may ask why, I say that.

Lennon was, and is capable of giving us tremendous highs (as per Barcelona). But was and would be capable of some terrible lows (Morton in the cup).

Someone said years ago, that a team is often a direct reflection of the manager. Something that played out with Man Utd under sir Alex. A dynamic team, full of steel and grit.

Well Lennon’s personal issues are well documented. And for me, under his long term guidance, there would be too many ups and downs.

Best manager since Stein? Maybe , but as a man? Definitely not . No way could I imagine Jock Stein doing what Brendan Rodgers has done.

  17. Has Brendan actually gone yet or is he just talking to Leicester? If the latter, how will we repond if he either turns them down or agrees to join but at the end of the season?

PS Any news on Calmac injury??

  18. Rodgers signed a 4 year deal in 2017

So he had two years left on his contract

Waiting to the summer wouldnt have made a difference

  19. Story I’m hearing which may or may not be true is that Leicester approached Celtic yesterday afternoon and Lawwell told them to chase themselves, BR found out and went mental because they had met the release clause.

Again, it might be heresay but tbh that’s all we’ve got at the moment.

  20. I’m in a very modest role compared to that of Celtic manager. I’m on 3 months notice. The football industry really is like no other.

  21. On SSN apparently:

Q: Brendan, what tipped the balance in Leicester’s favour?

A: Well it was an accumulation of things really, but mainly it was that incessant f-ing drumming from the Green Brigade corner, did my napper in so it did.

  22. Had a wee smile at Paul67s blog suggesting this was news to Celtic.

I don’t disbelieve Paul or his sources, but maybe he should have prefaced that with “officially”

The speed with which this has all happened makes me cynically thinks its been on the cards for a while and it was just waiting for the right moment, namely getting knocked out of Europe.

I am sad to see BR leave, as he was good for us, we were good for him. But he was found out in Europe where some of our results are the worst in our history. We all know about the financial gaps, but WGS and NL showed we can beat top teams at home with a bit of tactical nous, and deep down I think BR believed money was the only answer.

    Anyway, we move on….

NL as interim and next season

WGS as DoF , with Jack Ross as Head coach ?

  23. Comments including my own about comparisons to the iconic loyalty shown by the likes of Jock Stein and Paul McStay do kind of need to be tempered by the obscene sums of money on offer these days.

You could probably sign a contract as a player or a manager and make upwards of £10 million these days but certainly not in Scottish football.

  24. “I woke up here on a Monday morning as the manager of Celtic, and I’m in the best job in the world. Believe it or not the sky is blue here in Glasgow, I absolutely love it here.

“I’m so happy here at Celtic. I’m in a job I love, it’s a huge club with big expectancy and big pressure.

“There’s no doubt, I would love to work in the Premier League again one day, but I’m hopefully going to be coaching for another 20-odd years so it’s no time soon.

Big Pedro comes out smelling of roses both in relation to Dembele and Rodgers. Controlling the narrative quite well.

  26. Q: Brendan, what tipped the balance in Leicester’s favour?

A: Well it was an accumulation of things really, but mainly it was the tactical advice of that guy who sits behing HS in 106.

  27. I didn’t want to comment on today’s events until I was sure that Brendan Rodgers had left the building. There is no taking away from Brendan’s achievements at Celtic but today’s “Et tu, Brute?” moment will mean he will lose any legendary status that he had built up.

I never really bought into his being a Celtic supporter since being knee high to a grasshopper because in close inspection his memories of Celtic were a tad wishy washy – If you know your history – I’m afraid Brendan seemed to be a bit vague on this and looked to have been spoon fed the bits he didn’t know. I didn’t really care because I thought he could do a job for us.

As ? says a real Celtic supporter would not drop everybody in the shit not matter how bad things had become. I didn’t see any wild horses dragging Brendan down to Leicester. Would waiting another 2 and a bit months in a bid to secure the league have caused him any issues – I don’t think so? In fact winning another league and possibly another Treble would have enhanced his standing in the footballing world.

This is not a great day in Celtic’s history but there have been far worse ones in my lifetime. Managers and players come and go but the fans remain a constant because we are Celtic.

Thanks for the memories Brendan but I can only wish you relegation and mediocrity for today’s absolute lack of class.

Finally, Paul, do you think we all have heads that button up the back? You are either extremely naïve or are being extremely disingenuous if you expect us to believe that Celtic were unaware of these developments until yesterday, I bet PL had money on BR joining Leicester before the bookies declared their odds.
