Betis, late nights and game time

230

Granada drew their first two league games of the season (away to 10 man Villarreal, home to Valencia) before losing by four to Rayo Vallecano, so I did not hold out much hope they would tax Real Betis last night.  Betis battered them, but it took 89 minutes of effort to score the winner.

The game finished around midnight local time, so even if Betis delayed their homeward journey until today, it would have been a late and exhausting night.  69 hours after full time, they kick off against Celtic.  I don’t expect to see hands on hips after 20 minutes, but any port in a storm……….

Betis have now played four competitive games this season, not a lot of game time.  Our fourth competitive game was Jablonec away on 5 August, we have played eight subsequently and have five rest days since what was a straightforward win over Ross County.

Celtic have never won a competitive fixture on Spanish soil (even if you include Gibraltar!), we should be in no doubt the odds we face, but if there is a good time to go to Spain, it is in the first group game.

“Tell me Germaine. What’s the difference between being a leader of the sexual revolution in the sixties and an old slapper in the nineties?”

  7. JIMDOM @ 4:51 PM,

The EPL dream may well have sailed off into the sunset – SDM said as much almost two decades ago.

It isn’t the only strategy to get a higher league. There was talk of a Pan European league with two divisions Clubs like Ajax and Celtic initially in the second teir.

It was an initiative of some of the ECA leading lights – Peter Lawwell was very much in the mix.

Of course the botch up with the European Super League Clubs trying to for e the issue has put paid to that, definitely in the short term and possibly in the medium term.

However Dermot Desmond will never give up on the idea…

This was his take on his latest interview…

As we get more digitally advanced and as clubs take more control of their revenue streams — particularly broadcasting revenues — that will create more potential for Celtic and Rangers, and maybe some other Scottish clubs, to be invited into British leagues.”

Is this a conversation he is having with relevant parties?

“I’m having no conversations, no. I had all the conversations throughout the years – turkeys aren’t going to vote for Christmas. But digital forces will, I think, make English clubs reconsider the construction of their leagues.”

  9. The animosity and hostility against the board of Celtic, the former CEO and the majority shareholder on here and other forums is quite frankly staggering and out of all proportion. Yes of course, over nine record-breaking successful years, mistakes have been made and some judgment calls could/should have been better – wrong-turnings have been taken and the timing of some decisions could have been better. These things happen in all businesses and organizations all the time – the reason? – Those that are in positions of power are human and make mistakes. To suggest that anyone currently serving, or, who has served, as an officer of Celtic, has deliberately sabotaged the club is quite frankly absurd.

On the Dominic McKay situation, why would the board engage a high-profile key member of staff if they did not have faith in him and intend to back him to the hilt? Faith must then be replaced with trust and respect based on performance. This obviously did not happen and an important decision had to be made swiftly for the good of the club.

I submit that what has transpired happens in businesses all over the world day and daily. A suitable candidate is head-hunted on the basis of their performance in another organization and their willingness to join the new company. He/she interviews well, probably more than once, and displays a skill-set that the interviewers feel can be successfully transferred to their company. Then after a period of induction and shadowing, the time comes for the new person to ‘fly solo’.

It may have become apparent as important situations arose, that Dom was not living up to his ‘billing’. I believe the Eddie Howe situation was critical in the tenure of Dominic McKay. Perhaps he allowed the situation to drag on and others on the board wanted Ange brought in much sooner. Statements by Ian Bankier “Michael Nicholson is a team player” and Ange’s interviews: “Dom was not solely responsible for my appointment”, “I had been in contact with Michael Nicholson previously” & ” I’ve not done a good enough job of convincing” the club’s hierarchy(Dom?) of the need for squad reinforcements”, following the Champions League exit allude to this. In light of Ange’s positive start most supporters are of the opinion that he should have been appointed much earlier – maybe DD and the board were also convinced of that.

Dom seems to have become a hero to some, even though he has done nothing of proven note in his short period of employment. Seems to be a case based on a proverb “”The enemy of my enemy is my friend”.

In essence It could be a simple case of Dom ‘talking the talk’, but, not ‘walking the

In my experience there is nothing better that the majority – not all – the majority of Celtic Supporters like than a good old moan, regardless of which way is up. And of course these blogs or this blog in particular is the perfect place for doing just that,

take these guys that come on here and have a pop at you for whatever reason they can think of, its nothing personal, they just love a good old moan and see your posts as an opportunity to get their fix :-)

No. I’m saying I could not work with people with no probity.

No one can, not without losing their self respect

You have already done so, closely, during the Res 12 fiasco.

    ===

What do you know about the Res12 fiasco as you call it to reach that conclusion?

Bringing folk who lie to you to account is a sign of self respect.

Accepting being lied to and crawling away is the opposite as is continuing to support the liars.

Auldheid. My reply to you (9.32) was not about lack of probity from the plc – leaving aside their historical behaviour they had already demonstrated such by their action with Res 12.

My post related to you working with those on the resolutioners’ side. Several individuals, both named and unnamed, were involved in the early direction of travel and decision-making immediately prior to the AGM of 2013. In the time before or since you have no doubt become familiar with the people you worked with, and you must surely know, even with the lightest touch of due diligence, that the background of at least one of them as regards probity is at least questionable. For the record, my comments do not apply to Morrissey or Canamalar.

  12. Just to clarify

I am not bored by the Dom McKay story

I am bored by what people are presenting as the Dom McKay story, without any evidence at all bu their prior convictions and beliefs to shore it up.

That includes Board Leaks and Paul’s article and Phil’s article and most blogs I have read.

I have learned nothing factual from any of them.

We are mining an empty well.

This is not an attempt to prevent a board from being scrutinised; it is merley fatigue with rhetoric being presented as evidence.

If anyone genunely knows anything, I would love to hear it but please establish that it is factual and explain why it is factual.

All else is barking and howling

P.S. I believe that both WITS and Janey Godley are genuinely funny people but I doubt either would enjoy being paired as exemplars.

Please explain what you mean by “deliberately sabotaged the club”.

  14. JHB @ 5:39 PM,

You have just made up a scenario – then reinforce it with a “fact”, that I’ve highlighted in bold.

On the Dominic McKay situation, why would the board engage a high-profile key member of staff if they did not have faith in him and intend to back him to the hilt? Faith must then be replaced with trust and respect based on performance. This obviously did not happen and an important decision had to be made swiftly for the good of the club.

Why do you make up things and assert them as being facts?

Alternatively if it is a fact could you please corroborate?

However I have to question their taste in burgers — 5G is way off the pace regarding “middle class” informal dining. Although whoever made the call at least is giving it a go.

The bold DD would have told them to forget about their dreams and get back into the kitchen for some cheese on toast and wait for their lottery numbers to come up — growing a business is for small people / arbitrage is where it is / was at.

Finally the Terrific Trio have made a big blunder — In-N-Out Burger is where it is at.

That is the brand they should have brought to the 26 counties / NI / GB / EU.

A bit like buying AA when IT was available on lower wages.
