Better for both parties that Lustig moved on

302

Modest understatement: we got our money’s worth for the wages paid to Mikael Lustig, who confirmed last night he had left Celtic.  He joined from Rosenborg in January 2012 on a free transfer and leaves on a free, winning all eight league titles, four Scottish Cups and four League Cups in the intervening period, becoming one of our most decorated players in the process.

In 2013, Mikael had surgery to shave bone from both hips.  It is remarkable that his career at the top lasted this long, but, perhaps as a consequence of changes to his physical mechanics, he has suffered regular injuries since.  At 32, so the story is not over, there will be a place in the game for him, just not at the level Celtic aspire to.

Football clubs have a tendency to keep favourite players beyond their peak years, when they are running as much on reputation as ability.  Had Mikael stayed, it would be either for this reason, or because we were not going to recruit a replacement.  It is better for both parties that they moved on.

What happened to the (………………….) money?

    Dalglish

  2. Stephbhoy,

    The positives:

    – Great squad core (Tierney, Ajer, Forrest, Ntcham (although he will be sold), McGregor, Christie, Edouard)

    – Some really good academy prospects (Johnston, Henderson, Dembele)

    – Approx. 40m in the bank

    – Lots of loan and ageing players have left

    – Most of the remaining squad fillers contracts expire next summer (Bitton, Hayes, Mulumbu, Compper)

    – Reasonably kind CL draw so far (Astana play Cluj in round 1 and winners play Maccabi Tel Aviv for example)

    The Negatives

    – Badly need 3 or 4 new defenders (at least 2 first picks)

    – Genuinely think NL is a step backwards

    – Disappointing to lose out on young Scottish talent like McGinn and Turnbull (Scottish players when happy tend to stay longer)

    – Not a big Griffiths fan so while I want the club to look after him and hopefully he gets better I would prefer bigger faster strikers (i.e. Dembele, Edouard)

    – Worried that we will struggle to attract players like Dembele and Edouard without Rodgers

A balanced scorecard….time for bed in Sydney:-)

  3. Our right back situation, is going to be slugged out by 3 heavyweight champions of the world :

Tony Ralston, Adam Matthews, and Manny Perez…

Trust me… that’ll be our wack

Daniel Levy is quite good though.

Debatable. Spurs under achieved, until he appointed a young intelligent progressive coach. If you were a Spurs fan I’d wager that you’d put recent “success” down to Poccetino who has worked well with a restricted wage and transfer budget and a young team.

And they have won one League Cup since he’s been Chairman

Very sad seeing my favourite current player leaving, definitely another year in him IMO,where’s his replacement? Good luck to a Great Celt and his family, thanks for the memories, a hunskelper as well.

    Decent synopsis.

It’s the old saying… fail to plan, and you plan to fail.

If the plc board, in combination with Lenny, do not sufficiently address the gaps in the Celtic starting 11, and squad… Then there is no disguising the fact, that they are setting us up to fail.

If we fail, then I would suggest none of them will last very long.

    It really is that simple

  7. best of luck to m.lustig liked the big man and we could have given you better help during games .

  8. Did anyone see the Romania v Croatia U21 game? Could be some good (reasonably priced) players in that Romania team.

The right back Manea is often listed in young players to watch lists. Plays for Cluj on loan from Apollon Limasol in Cypres. That doesn’t inspire much/any confidence. However, Transfermarkt value him at 3.6m….we only have 3 or 4 players valued higher than that. Worth keeping an eye on in the other games.

Also, I see Gumny the Polish guy we were linked with in Jan didn’t start for the Polish U21s

Totally agree with you. It may not be possible to get all our targets in early in the window but we should be able to get one or two. We’ll have to see how it all plays out.

It will be very interesting if any of the knock out games in the Woman’s World Cup go to Penalties- any ‘save’ will go to VAR and i’m Fairly certain they will all be retaken, indeed, as we saw from the France decision even Dixie Deans type misses can be retaken – gonna be fun!

PS KT will go if right offer comes in PL has no interest in reaching CL while we still have some assets to flog. a joke that we have not prepared for CL qualifiers AGAIN! We knew BR was going months ago… but we never looked for a manger… so didn’t look for players… Anyway we should be buying players for the next seasons qualifiers. Same load of pish about not much time to recruit players for early qualifiers.

I’m not looking to criticise you, nor am I looking to debate your points. You’re free to hold whatever views you want, But seriously, going by your posts over the years, supporting Celtic seems to make you miserable. Why do you inflict that on yourself?. These are great times. The future will be whatever it will be, Neither you nor me or anyone else on this blog can influence it. Enjoy the unbelievable success the club is enjoying just now. One day it will pass, and you’ll have missed it. All the best to you.

  13. Thank You for everything P,C, Lustig you are and always will be remembered with affection by the Celtic Support.

As said earlier Mika’s departure will only be better for the Club if he is replaced by a better player. That is a big ask, there are big shoes to be filled at Right Back, no projects no cost cutting, time for Celtic Board to deliver.

France get a retake after missing a penalty against Nigeria

Argentina get a retake after penalty saved by Scotland goalkeeper.

Question, does the referee order a retake if the penalty taker scores first time, but the goalkeeper steps in front of (or even behind) goal line?

  19. Go tell the Spartim on

Corkcelt, if only we had any faith in the Celtic Board to deliver, considering the low cost/didnt interview anyone else managerial appointment, failure with Res 12, failure to tackle the refereeing issues (those not mentioned but highlighted by the S Brown resignation/mutually consented).

There’s plenty of time for them to prove my cynicism unfounded.

  20. Nicky Hammond is fluent in Welsh.

His only requirement is to translate the T&C ‘s of Adam Matthews £500 per week, 5 year deal.

Then he will be surplus to requirements, and can rejoin his brother Richard, racing some really nice cars.

  21. jinkyredstar on

    Celtic Mac- very interesting point!

One thing is almost certain – virtually no one will ‘miss’ a penalty under these rules – a keeper would have to be nailed to the line not to transgress.

  22. traditionalist88 on

£6m release fee for Stuani, 32 years old but would give us a massive boost in the final third and injection of goals for a couple of years as we push for 9/10IAR.

    I’d be tempted.

  26. The No.13 Shorts on

All seems a bit chaotic and back-of-fag-packet strategising at Celtic at the minute. Temporary recruitment guru appointment initially over summer period. It’s getting to the end of June already FFS (or 3-week taper period if you prefer). I get the feeling things aren’t going as well as Peter would have liked. I’d love to be a fly on the wall in there. Hope it all pans out well in time for the CL qualifiers so we can have even more money sitting in the bank.

I know, the ‘strategy’ doesn’t have to be shelved, experience and the best of both worlds is probably more to the point.

This is one we really could justify financially given our comfortable position and the projected return on the pitch at a pivotal time.

Though I read somewhere that Girona want to be reinstated to La Liga due to a max fixing allgation against Valladolid. Dont think they have much chance of that but if they did we could forget this one (his release fee halved on relegation from 14m euros to 7m euros).
