ALISTAIR JOHNSTON is on the verge of signing a contract extension with Celtic.

The Canadian international right-back, signed by Ange Postecoglou from MLS outfit CF Montreal in a £3.25million swoop in January 2022, is due to come out of terms in the summer of 2027.

However, the Hoops hierarchy are eager to tie down the 26-year-old defender on an enhanced deal.

Johnston hit the ground running when he made his first-team debut in a 2-2 derby draw at Ibrox just a week or so after arriving at Parkhead.

He replaced Croatia star Josip Juranovic who moved to the Bundesliga with Union Berlin later that month.

DIDN’T HE DO WELL…stand-in skipper Alistair Johnston celebrates his goal in the 3-0 win over Motherwell at Fir Park.

Johnston’s representative is in Scotland for talks at the moment, according to a report in the Daily Record, and it is hoped the extension will be finalised for the popular player who has captained the team this season in the sbsence of Callum McGregor and his deputy Cameron Carter-Vickers.

AJ led out the team at Fir Park last month and netted a crucial second goal – his fourth of the campaign – to push the champions towards a 3-0 win over Motherwell.

He also starred in the Hoops’ vital 3-1 Champions League triumph over RB Leipzig at Parkhead on Tuesday where he played a major part in the third goal which was snapped up by Reo Hatate.
