Big game for Kolo but Craig will deliver best of the season

231

What’s your hopes for tonight? Primarily I’m hoping to see Celtic play the kind of football we watched on Saturday, a fast, pass and move, game. I want to see Scott Sinclair and Tom Rogic take players on, for Leigh or Moussa to exploit space often denied to them in league games.

I’d also like to see four at the back. Defending in a formation we’re familiar with, even if it takes place 60 yards deeper than usual. This is where we got it wrong at Camp Nou. This Champions League group pits us against some of the greatest attacking footballers money can buy. It’s not a place for fundamental experimentation.

I suspect we’ll see the best Celtic goalkeeping performance of the season tonight. Craig Gordon will have lots to do, concentration will not have an opportunity to drop, decisions are likely to be more clear-cut that he’s been used to.

This is a big game for Kolo Toure. He’s a player who has little to prove to anyone, but that’s different when facing an English TV audience a few months after ending his 14 year term in the country. His performance tonight, and that of Celtic, will reflect on his decision to come to Celtic. Paul Lambert’s best game for Celtic came against Stuttgart in 2003. He also had a huge reputation in Germany, and an audience he wanted to convince he’d made the right move in coming to Celtic. Let’s hope for a similar outcome.

Enjoy the game.

Many thanks for the incredible support for my Great Scottish Run coming up on Sunday, to assist the work of the Foundation. The linked MyDonate account was at £1690 yesterday is right now is £10 off the £2k mark.

We have some special people among us.

  1. From previous…

Sagna, clichy, Toure and big Vincent Klub have all played in/at paradise on a cl night.

The result is a dependency on performance but paradoxically not necessary an indicator.

If we win the performance logically should reflect a good performance but not necessarily. However no one will care either way if it’s a win.

A 3 -0 defeat that could have been 7 if we play as we did v Barca will leave us as unhappy, whilst any score limited to 3, if the performance is from acceptable to good will console us.

So I’m looking for a good level of performance that suggests that at CL level we will be more competitive but of course hope it is reflected in a positive result.

I am delighted just to be in the Group Stages too!

In spite of what you think of my hopes and dreams!

  4. In Season 2012/13, Barcelona had a storming start to the season and were unbeaten until 7th November 2012…when they came calling to Celtic Park.

Man City have had a storming start to the season….

  5. We need Gandalf to appear and tell a load of you ghuys –

    We are not beat yet!

    We are not out yet!

We still have 5 games to go the last time I looked.

    And………..you never know.

  6. The point is that to me losing by any fewer than 3 goals would, in the current circumstances, be a creditable result for Celtic.

If others can’t accept that perhaps they should consider supporting a club with more money playing in a bigger league.

Can you re phrase that please?

you were going so well there. :@-)

I do feel a better result than a defeat coming our way tonight however I wouldn’t be too despondent in defeat unless it was a humping. I think anything over 4-0 against Man City will be a humping but I really do not see them coming close to that without reply at least once or twice.

  9. And I honestly don’t remember the blog being so downbeat before playing an English opponent no matter how good they appear to be.

These are the games the fans raise the players levels in.

I don’t think any team will come to Celtic Park after tonight expecting a win. Even Barcelona.

I could be wrong but that is my gut feeling and I’m going with that. Tim will tell.

Is it ok to nip in and piss on their chips?

Perfectly acceptable. There is no way you are going to the “Bad fire”

I will see you on Saturday in the BV for the game and anyone else attending.

  12. Man City’s frailties are at the back and with their not-very-good-with-his-hands-but good-with-his-feet goalie.

What is the plan for getting that far up the pitch? Set pieces and counter-attacks will be key. But are our wingers faster than their full backs?

Do we push up to force their GK to kick long instead of playing short? Does that expose us to their pacy attackers?

Thank God Brendan is the manager and not me – my team talk would just consist of these questions…

  13. No matter what happens tonight, no matter what the scoreline, the immutable reality is that they fear us. Not Manchester City in isolation or particular, not any individual club in England in isolation or in particular, but as an establishment, as a collective… they fear Celtic and the TV beanstalk.

They know, they all know south ofthe border, there are few if any, but one, in England, who have graced the global game more so than Celtic have. And don’t base your disown on wealth, or exposure, or trophies won, base it on grace and clamour

And how much those without such vote in fear of class.

  14. The Green Man says SACK THE Board on

The Bhoys will fluke a 3-0 win tonight….3 og’s from Raheem Sterling:)

Cmon Celts we can win this:)

I was at the game at Hampden (I believe) when Celtic played with Man. City. And I mean played.

  16. Well must fly, literally. In the immortal words of Sir Minty,”I will be jetting in to Edinburgh tonight”.

Missing the game, but had no options.

    COYBIG.

  17. One UK, there’s only one UK.

    Restrictive practices….?

They might beat us in the short term but God how much do they fear us in the long TERM???

Time and the bubble bursting will tell.

  18. At some point tonight I want to get really jump-abouty excited for a genuine meaningful reason. That happened once in Barcelona when we were awarded the penalty. Taking the lead would be best closely followed by getting an equaliser. or even ‘pulling it back to one down’ with 10 minutes left to play. Essentially, stay in the game for as long as we can and if that extends to over an hour of genuine exhausting excitement then I’ll be happy.

    With hope in our hearts.

  19. GlassTwoThirdsFull on

    Davidopoulos 1:06

Their defenders do over-play a bit and get themselves in trouble.

I’d like to see us develop a counter-attack game.

Over the years we have stuck one up front and he has ended up getting isolated. We do now have attacking players with pace.

I’d have a front two of Sinclair and Dembele/Griffiths, playing fairly deep. Pack the midfield.

  20. So I’m not as nervous about the result as I was against Barca but have to put into perspective the way City has been toying with so many of the epl teams this year. I’d be delighted with a draw but want to us put on a creditable display first and foremost. Mon the hoops.

  21. Phil boy

Don’t be silly. Then I would be trying to speak for you and as that wasn’t my intention in the first instance I’m not going to attempt to do it now.

You are perfectly capable of speaking for yourself.

    Sheesh!

  22. Afternoon all. Half day at work finished. Dug walked. Grabbed a bite to eat , so it’s a shower then jump on the rattler to Glasgow.

The usual pre European game , pessimism , nerves , angst and worry are absent. Why ? Possibly the huge task we face tonight.

10k to a marathon. Municipal course off yellow T compared to Championship course off medal T. In the wind.

Never mind. Celtic Park, floodlights, big crowd , magic can happen. Have a nice one. Might catch some of you in the BV. Have a nice one HH

  23. AULDHEID

You’ve told me not be silly and Auld Tam suggested yesterday I might be daft.

Might be something in it right enough!

    :-)

  24. GlassTwoThirdsFull

I agree about the lone striker being isolated – typically to the point where he becomes useless. Perhaps two deep strikers with pace would work?

Craig Levein would be proud of a 4-4-2-0…

  26. Looking forward to tonight’s game, at the very least it’s nice to play a team for the first time in competitive competition.

Looking for some help if possible? I’m on holiday from October 18th for a week going to Kardemena in Kos. Struck unlucky with the fixtures as originally thought I would be missing one European game when I was booking and 1 home league game v Hamilton. Sods law that I’d end up missing a home Champions League game but it is what it is! Does anyone know of any suitable bars in Kos that will have BT Sports? There is also the more minor matter of the semi final against the plucky cash strapped newly promoted team but that’s a secondary issue compared to the big game ;)

I’ve googled but nothing obvious jumping out so hoping someone who has been to Kos recently will be able to help! Thanks

  28. “And I honestly don’t remember the blog being so downbeat before playing an English opponent no matter how good they appear to be.”

    Moonbeams,

I wouldn’t say it’s so much downbeat as ‘not getting carried away’.

It’s only a few weeks since we were humbled in Gib, tawed in Isreal and ragdolled in Barca.

As I said I’m just glad we’re on the inside this season.

But….strange things do happen on nights like these ;))

    HH

  29. I’d have a huge TV screen in the home changing room playing highlights of all our key attacking moves and goals in the games against Barca (2-1), Spartak Moscow (2-1), Villarreal (2-0), AC Milan (2-1), Shakhtar Donetsk (2-1), Benfica (3-0), Man Utd (1-0)… all of which were, believe it or not, within the last 10 years.

We need to utilise every means, physical and psychological, overt and subliminal, fair and underhand, to gain any advantage that we can in any aspect of preparation or play related to tonight’s match. If we can get the players going out onto the pitch with even an unconscious belief that we can beat anyone on our day, by playing the right way, then we are at least starting in the right place.

    Just do it Celtic.
