Big performances needed from Gordon, Toure

406

It’s hard playing away from home in Europe, statistically, the hardest thing we do (harder still than guessing what bizarre nonsense Craig Thomson will get up to next). For all our great Champions League nights, our record on the Continent (or any other continent, as the case may be) is poor.

Hapoel Beer Shiva’s expectations will be low, but their job tonight is remarkably simple: score, then score again, then see what happens to Celtic. They scored twice in two minutes at Celtic Park, and if they can do the same in 80 minutes in Israel, that +£20m pot you’ve been reading about it anyone’s.

We need big performances from our big players, most notably Craig Gordon and Kolo Toure. I’ve no concerns we’ll get what’s necessary from Leigh Griffiths, James Forrest and Scott Sinclair. Therein lies the tactical problem for Hapoel.

They would prefer to play this game as they played Olympiakos: on the break. Instead, they have to chase the tie, which will leave space for Celtic’s fast front three to exploit.

Tactically, this is a very difficult task to prepare for the home team to prepare for, which is why Hapoel are 9-1 against qualifying, high odds for a two horse race. They need to play the opponent, so should defend, but they also need to play the aggregate score, so need to create lots of chances.

Teams who attempt to square this circle often lose the match. Let’s hope.

1-2, Celtic, on the night.

Roberts would cost, I reckon, in the region of £10M. £25K a week for 4 years would be £5.2M.

Sign him on a 5 year deal and sell after 4 for approaching £20M if he continues to progress and we are still gaining both financially (4 years CL = £100M + £5M profit) and in terms of being in the CL regularly if we can attract that type of talent.

    ———————————————-

Not a bad strategy. Only problem being that, after playing in Scotland for 4 years, he would have depreciated rather than appreciated in value! :-)

  2. Why do so many suggest Erik over O’Connell?

He has not played in a few weeks and is prone to overcommitting.

Young O’Connell has been good so far and is defensively sound despite his inexperience.

  3. I don’t see Brendan throwing on an unfit or untried player in such an important game.

No players who haven’t had some playing time already.

So Craig Gordon will be in goal and I’m confident he will play well.

Eoghan O’Connel will be preferred to Sviatchenko and this will be the making of the lad.

There may be a wee formational surprise from Brendan.

Janko and Lustig may both play with Mikel lining up alongside Kolo and EOC, leaving Kieran free to forage down the left when the opportunity arises.

A steady, defensively minded start to build confidence and calm the nervous tension and fears of the squeaky bum CQN ould timers.

Look, as long as people don’t start bashing the board when it doesn’t happen, then I suppose we can speculate all day long. It’s hard to project before the season plays out, at this point I think another year at Celtic might benefit the player, but I fully expect him to be part of the City squad coming off the bench next season. If not, there is a fair chance like Denayer, that they’ll want him tested at a higher level than Scotland.

  6. A quick goggle on the ol interweb shows city paid between 2m (daily mail) and 5m (telegraph) up front for Roberts.

There’s not a hope he’s triggered all the clauses to make his fee 11m so far.

That Celtic board are a disaster, imagine no signing Paddy Roberts up permanently already, shouldn’t even have got to this stage.

    Like that you mean ;)

Hooper,Ki,Wanyama,Forster and Van Dyke kind of disprove that.If we were to be playing CL football our top players’ values would rise.We can recieve £10m+ fees for players,it’s already happened with Victor,Fraser and Virgil.Continued presence in the CL group stages is what’s required.

Canny wait for kick off tonight. Play the same line up as last Wednesday and I think we will win convincingly tonight.

  10. Fanatic – I tend to agree. For this game is go for the match fit guy who has at least 3 full games in the same defence. Too risky bringing Erik in at this stage. I’d ease Eric back in against lesser teams. Maybe on 10th sept.

Fair point dude but you get your value when you purchase an asset. We didn’t paid so much for those players. If we paid £10m for PR then sold him 4 year later we’d get the same back I reckon. However, if we’re paying far less for him upfront than I agree with your point.

  14. When it suddenly became 3-2 last week,I sensed that many of us at the game were worried. At 4-2, I felt that worry lessen. At 5-2, it all but evaporated. Now, for some, it is returning and I think that might be because the two quick goals are remembered more strongly than are the FIVE we scored.

Remember, we are not playing in Scotland and we are not being refereed by a sympathiser of the deid club.

The only reason I am not brimming with confidence is because I am a Celtic supporter.

  15. Here’s a thing. It seems that Roberts’ £12M valuation was half up front and the rest target based add-ons.

Does the fact that he only cost City £6M bring him closer to us (I say yes).

Not sure City would be too fussed about “getting their money back” on Roberts (whatever it was). He is either part of their new manager’s plans or he isn’t. If he isn’t they will let him go.

They can buy any player in the world and pay whatever it takes to get them.

If he was keen on staying and wages could be agreed we should at least have a go.

  19. I think all this paddy Roberts stuff is a PLC planted story.

If we qualify we might push the boat out on a player we already have for the year.

No Peter, I want another signing on Thursday and wee paddy signed up closer to the end of his loan deal please and thank you :)

  20. IF we do go through tonight and we then want to progress from the Group stage, I would like these four :

    Leicester City

    Porto

    Ajax

    Celtic

For excitement alone, I would like these:

    Real Madrid

    Arsenal

    Sporting Lisbon

    Celtic

We must avoid losing the early goal which we’re famous for in Europe. Sounds like I’m not the only bottle merchant going for a walk tonight, with led zep iv on the earphones to drown out the shouting and bawling coming from Castlemilk living rooms. Then cowardly check my messages at half time (hopefully bolting back home for second half if it’s looking good)

  22. Afternoon,

A bit off beam but let me know what I am missing.

The SFA currently have 19 Category One officials.

There are around 38 League games for each team in the average season.

Each week the SPL has six games.

On a three week rotation each referee would only get one game.

Meaning you would only supervise 13 games per season

Even on some kind of even split you should only take games involving each team at most 4 times

Craig Thomson has already been involved in two Celtic games.

    Why?

  23. VFR800A8 on 23RD AUGUST 2016 3:43 PM

  27. If we go through, and I’m confident we will, we’ll be up against it whoever we get. Best chance for a 4th seed is to hope that the first seed batters everyone and you can sneak 6 points at home against the other two, then it becomes all about one good away performance to take you through. I’d be delighted with a third place finish.

On the flip side if the shit hits the fan we have European footy guaranteed till Christmas and thats great news.

Either way I’ll be happy although a little happier with £30M in the bank……..:-)
