Bigger questions loom than reconstruction

1092

We now know that Craig Whyte met Neil Doncaster and Ralph Topping, directors of the SPL, in London in October 2011 and informed them of the likelihood that Rangers would go into liquidation.  Whyte’s plan, to start a Newco and have it parachuted into top flight football was only taken seriously as a result of these three having a head start on everyone else and doing some preparatory work.

Charles Green has no such plans.  If he loses Ibrox, becomes embroiled in IPO-related troubles or fails to bridge the gap between money-in and money-out, an unplanned liquidation could follow with a potentially protracted period where physical assets are moribund and playing assets and other staff are released.

The SPL and SFL would do well to consider ‘what next?’ when they hold separate meetings next week.  The century-old ways are gone, things will never be the same again.

I’m really pleased the aforementioned Charlie issued an apology for his offending comments, even if he did so under duress from the SFA.  This kind of rhetoric has taken control within football in some European countries.  Once the door is open it is hard to close it again.

Yes, they were also charged and found guilty of two breaches.

    The difference is the punishment.

The Huns received a reprimand ,and a welcome back, for their sins.

It was ever thus but still a bloody disgrace that the SFA can be s blatant in their bias.

  2. Talking of offensive comments am i alone in finding it strange that a couple of posters on CQN, who are ‘alleged’ Celtic supporters, refer to elements of the Celtic community as ‘Plastic Paddies”. Isn’t that an oft used dysphemism of the followers of TRFC and the OO when describing the Irish Diaspora in Scotland.

Regardless of the protestations of other contributors on the blog that these individuals are Celtic fans I for one have serious doubts that they are. We are a broad church but if I were to refer to a Celtic supporter of any other minority group in Scotland as a ‘ plastic XX’ I would rightly be accused of being a racist.

    You’re dead right there.

That was one of her evil gang’s many acts which have led The UKplc to where it is today.

Back then you actually saw young drunken ‘suits’ weaving back and forth clutching handfuls of cash at any of the main train stations of an evening.

(And drunken yuppies setting fire to homeless alcoholics slumped under the arches down by The Embankment was a popular pastime for these brave young entrepreneurs.)

She (Thatcher) was a divisive, cruel human who revelled in her air of superiority.

No one on the msm is talking of her ruination of millions, her close friendship with Savile.

Even in death she is a malign influence.

And all her acolytes (the tory party and new labour) are showing no solemnity….they are practically making her funeral a street party.

This is her legacy. This is how she has left this big island tax haven and the spiv nation she helped to create.

And god help you if you criticise her publically.

She was there in 1984 and she did her best to make the fiction reality.

That’s exactly the point, if they are the same a we are led to believe, even though we know its bull, then the punishment has to be the same. Why did the sfa not come out 6 weeks after the utd game an ban the Huns. Seems Dunfermline are getting the rules applied. They should use last year as an appeal.

  11. I’m not a fan of faith based schooling but that’s irrelevant to this point. As far as I can see the only way you could state that denominational schools lead to sectarianism is that they create a focus of attack and exclusion for bigots.

Naturally there will also be a bit of ‘old school tie ‘ type stuff but that’s hardly restricted to faith schools.

I won’t be lectured to regarding political correctness in respect of that creature.

Your accusation of mysogynism assumes that I do not like her because she was a woman.

Firstly, she herself did nothing for the cause of women, far less feminism. She was more of a man than those in her cabinet and positively revelled in the Spitting image caricature.

She did not see herself as a woman though even her admirers acknowledge she used feminine flattery to her political advantage (although it is a mystery to me how)

Secondly, and on that basis, I despise her for all the reasons highlighted at length on here throughout the week.

In terms of the first point I acknowledge wrongly using the term ‘bitch’ as I remember her gender is not the reason I hate her and everything she stands for. Would you prefer me to use other terms of abuse or subscribe to your idolatry of her?

Your views on her as expressed in here are quite clearly diametrically opposed to mine and I think it now best to leave this.

Rangers chairman Malcolm Murray: Lionheart or lame duck?

    12 Apr 2013 08:15

MALCOLM Murray has already been fortunate to survive one coup amidst much shameful smearing of his name – but he can’t sit in silence as the club lurches towards another crisis.

ONE week after the onset of the latest full-blown crisis inside Ibrox it is time to ask again: Just where is Malcolm Murray in all of this and what exactly is he doing to protect his club?

“Never hurry a Murray” is the Rangers chairman’s favourite catchphrase but while he dawdles his business is eating itself alive.

In fact, he might wish to consider what has happened to some of his namesakes in recent years. Sir David, Paul, Ian and Neil have all left the club for various reasons. They’re even supposed to be taking the Murray out of Murray Park, aren’t they?

And if current chairman Murray fails to grab control of what is happening under his watch, he too will find his time is up.

He has already been fortunate to survive one coup amidst much shameful smearing of his name but it’s his perceived reluctance to tackle chief executive Charles Green head on which might finish what’s left of his own credibility.

So is Murray already a lame duck? Well, let’s first examine how this narrative has developed since last Friday when the loathsome Craig Whyte burst back in through the front doors of Ibrox and lobbed a hand grenade at the foot of the old marble staircase.

By leaking recordings of conversations he had with the increasingly rattled Green, Whyte was publicly ambushing a former accomplice. His tapes proved Green had been guilty of blatantly lying as to the true extent of the relationship between this pair, not only to the fans but also to the SFA. A guilt Green has since been forced to admit.

It must not be forgotten that the governing body only agreed to allow Rangers to start playing again on August 8 last year after receiving written assurances that Whyte was not involved in Green’s £5.5million takeover.

And the fact the SFA have now demanded “clarity” from Green on this matter should shake Rangers fans to their bones because if it should now be decided that deliberate deception took place in order for this licence to be handed over, then Stewart Regan will face one almighty conundrum unless Rangers act now to distance themselves from their own chief executive.

Yet eight days on and Murray continues to say nothing, which is really quite astonishing.

On Wednesday, police were raiding properties in an attempt to gather evidence which may prove illegality occurred when Whyte bought the club in May 2011. Those same officers may even be looking for links between Whyte and Green which could also destroy the current regime.

If that was not bad enough, it came at a time when manager Ally McCoist is engaged in a power struggle with Green who has asked him to consider sacking his right-hand men, Ian Durrant and Kenny McDowall, in order to save his own skin.

This was yet another crass move by a chief executive who, if nothing else, excels in crudeness and who seems committed to isolating and undermining McCoist. Maybe even sickening him into breaking his promise never to walk away. Contrary to a couple of hopelessly ill-informed reports, McCoist did not deny having been told this by Green. He denied entering into discussions about it which is entirely different.

This is one conversation he has no wish to engage in which is why he refused to answer questions on our story after reading out a carefully worded prepared statement. When pushed he said simply: “Ask Charles.” Which was his way of admitting the Record was right yet again.

So now we have the cops piling in through the doors, the manager admitting he is at war with his chief executive, the chief executive admitting he colluded with Whyte during his own takeover, not to mention being hauled up on a charge of racism by the SFA, a player sacked after being hoaxed by some obsessive internet extremist, a chief scout being bulleted and wrongly accused of malpractice, a physio axed without the manager’s consent. And, not forgetting, the possibility of a dispute with the SFA over whether or not the club should be allowed to operate at all.

And still the chairman says nothing? There is a very real danger Murray might hear himself quacking when he finally does decide to open his mouth. He may already be beyond lame. He may be crispy aromatic.

That would be a dreadful shame because Murray has been far from idle behind the scenes over the last seven days. He knows exactly what must be done to save the reputation of his club.

It is my belief he wants Green and Sevco cohorts Imran Ahmad and Brian Stockbridge overthrown. He’s just having much more trouble making it happen than he ought to.

Murray is a stickler for corporate governance and is determined to be seen to be doing things in a correct and proper manner – all of which is admirable.

But his reluctance to show leadership, to communicate with the supporters and to explain to them his position does him no favours at all. In fact, it makes him look weak almost to the point of being incompetent.

So, once again, it falls on this newspaper to inform the fans of what is really going on. The truth is Murray’s board is not yet entirely unified but only because one of his four non-executive directors has yet to be persuaded to mow Green down.

This presents Murray – and those who do agree with him – with a problem because failure to act is no longer an option.

Having broadly agreed some form of action must be taken, stock market protocol dictates they will now be expected to stand by their convictions.

That action could take the form of suspensions pending internal investigations into the conduct of Green, Ahmad and Stockbridge. It could even lead to termination of their contracts. Or, alternatively, the club carries on regardless, on this journey towards complete and utter chaos.

But if no agreement is reached on how to deal with Green and his sidekicks then resignations from the board can be expected. It would be no surprise at all if Walter Smith was one of the first to step down given his disgust at what is going on.

Serious questions must also be asked. Have significant sums been shuffled halfway around the globe? If so, why? And what is the club’s connection with Singapore?

Come to think of it, has Murray or any of his non-execs actually seen a club bank statement since Green boasted around £23m was dumped in there following a pre-Christmas share issue? If not, why not?

All of the above must be addressed if Murray is to survive this crisis with his position secure and his board intact. What they cannot do is nothing. So one question remains. Is the Rangers chairman a lame duck or a lionheart?

Would the real Malcolm Murray please stand up?

    Published on Friday 12 April 2013 00:51

IT HAS emerged that Rangers chief executive Charles Green will face two charges of bringing the game into disrepute.

On Wednesday, the Scottish Football Association issued a notice of complaint to the 59-year-old concerning alleged racist language, after he referred to Rangers business partner Imran Ahmad as his “little Paki friend” in a newspaper interview published last Sunday.

However, those are not the only comments he will be asked to explain at Hampden on 25 April, with SFA sources last night confirming that he will also be grilled over remarks broadcast on Radio Clyde on Monday, 8 April.

In an interview recorded last September but not aired until its appearance on Clyde’s Super Scoreboard programme at the start of this week, Green ended his conversation with reporter Gerry McCulloch by saying: “No surrender.”

The phrase is sung by Rangers fans in the Loyalist anthem Derry’s Walls, a song which refers to the Siege of Derry in 1689 and the interview was aired belatedly in order to illustrate Green’s capacity for making ill-advised statements.

Meanwhile, on the pitch, Rangers suffered a blow yesterday with the news that winger Barrie McKay will not play again this season after suffering a foot injury during the friendly win over Linfield on Wednesday.

McKay came off after 16 minutes of the 2-0 friendly victory and will see a specialist in London early next week to gauge the extent of the damage. But Rangers said it “seems certain” that the injury will rule him out of Rangers’ four remaining Irn-Bru Third Division matches.

The injury also casts doubt on McKay’s inclusion in the Scotland squad for the Elite Stage of the European Under-19 Championship towards the end of May.’

Chuckles might want to ask why the SFA have charged him with this when they took no action against Alastair Johnston, who because of his background would be more aware of the connotations and associations of the phrase, used it.
