Billy McNeill and Davie Hay met the press at Celtic Park yesterday, along with Alex Gordon, who authored their time as managers of Celtic. It didn’t disappoint……
Billy was self-effacing as ever. For all purposes, today he is an ordinary Celtic fan, so much so you need to remind yourself that there is nothing in the club game he hasn’t done. Yesterday was about his days as Celtic manager but he made the point that Davie Hay was a profound influence on him as a team-mate.
The take-away thought I had on Davie Hay was about his range of knowledge and experience. He has done so much in the game which still pulses in his veins. Does Scotland still produce men of his calibre? If so, why are we not giving them a platform to flourish?
There is tons of great stuff in the book from both men:

Desmond is clever – he can’t influence whether the rangers get into scottish premiership or not! He is playing the game – Celtic have access to SIGNIFICANTLY more revenue if we are guaranteed a shot at champs league footy most years – this is where the real money is. Sevco in the SP is a threat to this revenue stream ……if they can lure an investor.

Much as I’d love DU to pay 2/3rds to BDO and only 1/3rd to Sevco, I don’t think they can. They purchased the player from Sevco, not Rangers IL.
The fact that Sevco had to remove their provocative “same club” statements after being contacted by DU lawyers confirms that legally, they know full well that the “same club” myth is just that, a myth.

I’m sure Odegaard is a good player. I’m not sure he will be much better, at the moment, than the likes of Dylan McGeouch.
Stromsgodset will not have many, if any, players in their youth set up anywhere near our youngsters level.
It is very easy to get noticed in a club like that.
If we pay big money for this boy he would be under a lot of pressure. Is he as good as James Forrest? I doubt it.

I acknowledge that I haven’t seen or done an economic analysis …. but I suspect that, as long as the rest of the clubs can improve so as to make a mark in Europe (and help the co-efficient), Celtic would benefit most from (i) a league that is competitive (so as to sell season books), but not too competitive (so that they get in the CL every year and accrue the financial benefit).
I dont see why Sevco are necessary to either, and, in fact, if properly funded (which, admittedly is an issue… but SFA/SPFL cheating can be a great equalizer) would be the greatest threat to that.
However, DD wants Sevco to be in the top division. Why?
I dont see any great plan here by DD… except grab as much money as possible in the short term. He bought his stake in Celtic clearly hoping that they would make it into the EPL, at which time he would have made a pisspot of money … but that didn’t happen, and he is trying to make hay while the sun shines by playing on the O**F**** sensibilities. Not particularly honourable, but (at least in the short term) it may be effective. However, as I have said before, in the long term, if run properly, Celtic would be as successful (if not more successful) without Sevco. But like all good robber barons, short term profits are usually the order of the day..
Dont think there is anything particularly noble, surprising or clever about DD’s plans in all of this.

I’m pointing out the logical fallacy of the argument that DD wants Sevco back. If profit is DD’s aim look at our accounts since Rangers went bust. Why would he want to put that profit at risk? It is illogical to charge him with being only interested in the money and at same time argue he wants to put that money at risk.
Competition yes, Sevco why?
They look unlikely to get promotion from the lower division this season and if they do it will be because of the poverty of most of the opposition, so no competition there even if they get promoted.
I’ll go further, if Celtic’s business plan is built around having Sevco back as competition in the next three years I’d be demanding the removal of the Board for being stupid.
Sevco never have been competitive within the rules since 2000 and the conditions that gave them unfair financial advantage that equated to sporting advantage have ceased to exist.
I think the Celtic Board just want to keep the game going and are in the happy position of being able to trim their books to enable that without losing the advantage being the largest supported club brings them.
I am reminded that when prisoners in concentration camps were released many wandered back because they had become conditioned to the institutional life.
I think our game is suffering from the same kind of conditioned thinking and I hope that those conditions never reappear in Scottish football.
I was thinking about the LNS verdict on the huns cheating when they were on EBT’s and it reminded me of the way the Tory party used to deal with contentious parades. Eventually give in to the loyalist hoards, send the RUC in and crack a few taig’s skulls to clear the road for the knuckle scrapers. The lesser of the two evils as a Tory minister put it around the time of Drumcree. The orange mob would go apoplectic if their tainted titles were stripped which LNS knew. There was probably more justice in apartheid South Africa than anything to do with the current Sevco mob.
