Billy and Davie on Caesar and the Assassin

856

Billy McNeill and Davie Hay met the press at Celtic Park yesterday, along with Alex Gordon, who authored their time as managers of Celtic.  It didn’t disappoint……

Billy was self-effacing as ever.  For all purposes, today he is an ordinary Celtic fan, so much so you need to remind yourself that there is nothing in the club game he hasn’t done.  Yesterday was about his days as Celtic manager but he made the point that Davie Hay was a profound influence on him as a team-mate.

The take-away thought I had on Davie Hay was about his range of knowledge and experience.  He has done so much in the game which still pulses in his veins.  Does Scotland still produce men of his calibre?  If so, why are we not giving them a platform to flourish?

There is tons of great stuff in the book from both men:

“We were already a goal down nine minutes into the second-half when Johnny Doyle was ordered off.  As he came off, I remember telling him he would be in serious trouble if we lost.

“I was furious, especially as we were in such a desperate situation at the time.

“Afterwards in the foyer, Jimmy Johnstone, Bobby Murdoch, Mike Jackson, Paul Wilson, Pat McCluskey, Benny Rooney and a whole host of former players were dancing around in amazement.

“Jinky was as happy as I’ve seen him. That win meant so much to anyone with an affiliation with Celtic.”

– Billy McNeill on winning the league against Rangers in 1979.

“I arranged for someone to cut out the stories and pin them to the walls of our dressing room at Love Street.

“I said nothing, but I could see the players reading the clippings. It was having the desired effect. It’s never clever to dismiss Celtic.

“It’s history now that we won 5-0 and Hearts lost 2-0.

“I think I still owe [Albert Kidd] a pint!”

-Davie Hay on winning the league at Love St in 1986.

The book’s great, reading the step-by-step accounts of what happened from the managers’ view, you’ll love it.  I know I’m biased but it’s the best thing CQN has done, a wee bit of our history set down on record.

I hope the weather on Sunday is not as bad as the forecast. Heavy rain for Celtic Park. Mind you, I think the BBC Weather page is organised by a Hun. Lousy weather is always forecast when we have a Home game !!

    Very true.

  6. The Dewani case confirms the threadbare reputation of the SA legal system following the shambles of the Pistoris case, albeit we are now hearing that the proscecution now have leave to appeal.

Of course we are not surprised in the least – any system which replaces FORTY TWO YEARS in prison with a fine, as was the case with Dave King, is risible in the extreme……, and what does it say about the officials and supporters of a certain ‘Scottish Institution’ and their ‘fellow travellers’ in the Scottish MSM, who long for this convicted tax fraudster to become their ‘sugar daddy’

btw – Ashley is NOT infallible – notwithstanding his ‘investment’ down in Sunny Govan, his recent purchase of Tesco stock is also being seen as a faux pas.

I didn’t say that I thought him guilty. Nor did I suggest that others did.

I simply stated why I thought the press had sensationalised the event.

If he hadn’t been gay/bisexual,and she was pot-ugly,no story.

And probably no prosecution and a helluva lot of sympathy.

The court of public opinion rarely deals with facts and rationale,it deals in soundbites and sympathy. As I said,a family lost their daughter, and a man lost his wife and his reputation.

It seems he won a court case, but I can’t see a winner anywhere. I’m glad my exposure to the law has been limited because IMO there are far too many cases where reputations are ruined despite innocence of the charges.

I would have left it , I would have let it linger , I would have let it be reported . It would then have been beyond a cease and desist..

The Third CQN Annual should be falling through the letterboxes of many of us over the next few days.

Unlike the previous two annuals, this is not just a best of the year publication. It has some new articles and features in it and so some of the content is brand new.

Mr Guidetti features on the front and we all get a mention in the course of the read.

Anyone who hasn’t ordered one can get one at cqnbookstore.com

  18. Martin Ødegaard

A very talented prospect by all accounts. Figures being thrown about for the boy. It looks like around £3m will need to be paid if the press are to be believed (BRTH has already rubbished them today though so we maybe do not know what will have to be paid).

The boy is only 15 and will turn 16 on 17th December. I assume he will sign a pro contract then? Has he sigend one already? Norwegian football may differ from here. We were stung with young Islam Feruz. He just stopped turning up for training and eventually moved to Chelski. Not sure he has reached the potential yet that he had shown as a youngster at Celtic. Last I seen he was being loaned out for experience but off the pitch the boy seems to have his head not in the right place. Martin Ødegaard appears to be a more sensible lad and his dad appears to be a good influence on his career being a former player himself. Lots of clubs are being mentioned for the boy. Some huge CL clubs are being quoted. Deila obviously holds some sway already knowing the boy and training him previously. Clearly he should arrive match fit as I’m sure Ronny’s former assistant follows a similar regime at Strømsgodset. The boy is a gamble. A huge gamble for Celtic for a youngster if we have to pay in excess of £1m.

If Ronny wants the lad and we can entice him then we take him on. He is already a full international. I haven’t done the Youtube scouting as everyone looks a player on there. Stopped doing that after we signed Bangura. Ryan Gauld was a lower risk signing as we knew he could do it in our league. This lad could end up being a superstar but I think as a club we have to look at how much we may have to pay. A few million could secure an out of contract player such as Guidetti or an experienced player for our back line or midfield which I think we are currently lacking. VVD will probably leave some time in the next 6 months. Who replaces him? Denayer will go back to Man City in the summer. We may get him back on another loan deal for next season. Maybe not? If that is the case we need 2 CL ready CB’s and they will cost a few quid. I’m not sure Mulgrew and Ambrose in the back line are the answer. Maybe they are? Currently our spine in the most part is Gordon, Denayer, VVD, Brown, Johansen & Guidetti. By the end of this season we could lose half of that spine. In January I would hope that we know the situation with VVD and Guidetti. If they are not going to be part of the spine next season then certainly Guidetti should be phased out of the starting line up towards the end of April. CL qualification comes early and this year we were not ready. Next year Deila knows what is required and we MUST be ready.

The young lad may be a luxury player and a tidy piece of investment but in all honesty I think our priorities lie elsewhere. If we can secure him for a decent price and Ronny feels he can go into the first team then great stuff but I think he should focus on the spine for June in the transfer window and add players with experience and guile. The CL is vital for the club. Not just in monetary terms but to excite the fans. The stadium looks a bit deserted at times this season. The lack of a solid spine and the ability to pick off similar teams in the qualifiers will ensure it reamins that way next season for league matches. January is the key window for us. Get the bosmans tied up and bring players in to be ready for July qualifiers. Martin Ødegaard appears a nice luxury to have but I wouldn;t be spending my transfer budget on a wee boy when we require men with the know how and desire to be in the CL next season. Just my thoughts on the wonderkid.

  20. Right, I’m doing my favourite goal of the day early…

This goal comes from Celtic’s 3-1 first leg win against Basel (let’s not talk about the second leg). In that game Larsson scored a penalty then missed a penalty later in the match because he was a rubbish player. Chris Sutton scored with a back-heel, and then Momo Sylla scored this beauty:

His HBOS,Tesco and Debenham adventures seem to suggest that he will continue to ‘invest’ as the price of so doing reduces. In other words, his potential profit rockets.

That he seems blind to the downside suggests a God complex or autism.

If we can, we will sign Martin Odegaard, even at a couple of million. He has sell on value written all over him in large numbers and as we all know that is one of the top criteria we look for when making a signing.

Alas no, I am not delivering the annuals personally and in my short sojourn as Postman Pat I was never once offered a biscuit or a cold widow!

  28. I must say that I do feel for Kris Commons as he is left on the bench this season.

He was the mainstay of the team last season, almost single handedly fulfilling the striker’s role, which of course is not his ‘normal’ position.

I believe that if we are now intent on playing a high-tempo pressing game, Kris could be even more valuable in that free role just behind the striker(s), and based on his strike-rate last season, perhaps a greater number of chances would be getting converted.
