Billy and Davie on Caesar and the Assassin

856

Billy McNeill and Davie Hay met the press at Celtic Park yesterday, along with Alex Gordon, who authored their time as managers of Celtic.  It didn’t disappoint……

Billy was self-effacing as ever.  For all purposes, today he is an ordinary Celtic fan, so much so you need to remind yourself that there is nothing in the club game he hasn’t done.  Yesterday was about his days as Celtic manager but he made the point that Davie Hay was a profound influence on him as a team-mate.

The take-away thought I had on Davie Hay was about his range of knowledge and experience.  He has done so much in the game which still pulses in his veins.  Does Scotland still produce men of his calibre?  If so, why are we not giving them a platform to flourish?

There is tons of great stuff in the book from both men:

“We were already a goal down nine minutes into the second-half when Johnny Doyle was ordered off.  As he came off, I remember telling him he would be in serious trouble if we lost.

“I was furious, especially as we were in such a desperate situation at the time.

“Afterwards in the foyer, Jimmy Johnstone, Bobby Murdoch, Mike Jackson, Paul Wilson, Pat McCluskey, Benny Rooney and a whole host of former players were dancing around in amazement.

“Jinky was as happy as I’ve seen him. That win meant so much to anyone with an affiliation with Celtic.”

– Billy McNeill on winning the league against Rangers in 1979.

“I arranged for someone to cut out the stories and pin them to the walls of our dressing room at Love Street.

“I said nothing, but I could see the players reading the clippings. It was having the desired effect. It’s never clever to dismiss Celtic.

“It’s history now that we won 5-0 and Hearts lost 2-0.

“I think I still owe [Albert Kidd] a pint!”

-Davie Hay on winning the league at Love St in 1986.

The book’s great, reading the step-by-step accounts of what happened from the managers’ view, you’ll love it.  I know I’m biased but it’s the best thing CQN has done, a wee bit of our history set down on record.

I must say that I do feel for Kris Commons as he is left on the bench this season.

He was the mainstay of the team last season, almost single handedly fulfilling the striker’s role, which of course is not his ‘normal’ position.

I believe that if we are now intent on playing a high-tempo pressing game, Kris could be even more valuable in that free role just behind the striker(s), and based on his strike-rate last season, perhaps a greater number of chances would be getting converted.

I think the problem is that if you play KC in that free role we lose a midfielder, and the common consensus is that we are vulnerable with only 2 midfielders. I just don’t think Commons has the legs or the appetite to chase down the ball in that position.

(although there was evidence of him doing just that at St Johnstone at the start of the season)

His HBOS,Tesco and Debenham adventures seem to suggest that he will continue to ‘invest’ as the price of so doing reduces. In other words, his potential profit rockets.

That he seems blind to the downside suggests a God complex or autism.

There is certainly no “blind-side’ in the Ibrox venture – just rows of ‘dirty washing’, with apparently numerous basketfuls still waiting to be ‘hung out’

It would appear that the price needed to protect his retail stake requires deeper involvement in the Govan ‘quicksand’

  4. Kris Commons is offski to be with Lenny, I could be wrong, but I think he has been tapped, it goes on and it’s prob going to be his last big signing so I don’t blame him and wish him and his family all the luck in the world, and we all move on with no bad feelings, such is life.

Captain Scott Brown and winger James Forrest have been left out of the Celtic squad for the final Europa League Group D game against Dinamo Zagreb in Croatia on Thursday.

The Hoops have already qualified for the knockout stages and Brown is one booking away from a suspension while Forrest is still coming back to full fitness after injury.

    Sensible move.

I would prefer VVD and Craig Gordon not to play either. Get out of sight as quick as possible in the league to allow us to focus on Europe and the cups a bit more in the New year.

I don’t think that Kris has been tapped,as such.

He clearly isn’t valued by RD and is available on a pre-contract next month.

He has had his best years under Lenny,so signing for a manager who knows and rates him makes sense.

On last season,I’ll miss him. He was outstanding.

On his performance against Hamilton, the only time I’ve seen him in action this season,I won’t.

But-he goes with my best wishes, fond regards, great memories.

  10. Nclhe,

They maybe were zeroed in the past. I’m not sure.

I know the rules were changed last year and are wiped after quarters. Maybe they changed it then??

I am sure bookings are zeroed but any suspension acrued would still be binding in the next round.

I would like to see Tonev and Wakaso both start the match and see what they have to offer. Kayal should get a run as well so that he can put himself in the shop window. He has been a good servant and I hope he gets a good move. Derk? Is he still around? Injured probably. It might be worth him getting a run out. Hopefully a couple of youngsters will feature. It really is a dead rubber and the result doesn;t matter a whole lot. It gives Ronny a chance to look at some players and some options in a very decent game scenario. Maybe Mulgrew will play CB with VVD and Ambrose can get a run in the holding midfield role.

  16. My way of protest to the not fit for purpose a-holes who run the game here is only to go to SPFL and European games involving Celtic, any thing else involving the SFA or SFL I have nothing to do with, they will not get one penny from me, but that’s just me.
