Billy and Davie on Caesar and the Assassin

856

Billy McNeill and Davie Hay met the press at Celtic Park yesterday, along with Alex Gordon, who authored their time as managers of Celtic.  It didn’t disappoint……

Billy was self-effacing as ever.  For all purposes, today he is an ordinary Celtic fan, so much so you need to remind yourself that there is nothing in the club game he hasn’t done.  Yesterday was about his days as Celtic manager but he made the point that Davie Hay was a profound influence on him as a team-mate.

The take-away thought I had on Davie Hay was about his range of knowledge and experience.  He has done so much in the game which still pulses in his veins.  Does Scotland still produce men of his calibre?  If so, why are we not giving them a platform to flourish?

There is tons of great stuff in the book from both men:

“We were already a goal down nine minutes into the second-half when Johnny Doyle was ordered off.  As he came off, I remember telling him he would be in serious trouble if we lost.

“I was furious, especially as we were in such a desperate situation at the time.

“Afterwards in the foyer, Jimmy Johnstone, Bobby Murdoch, Mike Jackson, Paul Wilson, Pat McCluskey, Benny Rooney and a whole host of former players were dancing around in amazement.

“Jinky was as happy as I’ve seen him. That win meant so much to anyone with an affiliation with Celtic.”

– Billy McNeill on winning the league against Rangers in 1979.

“I arranged for someone to cut out the stories and pin them to the walls of our dressing room at Love Street.

“I said nothing, but I could see the players reading the clippings. It was having the desired effect. It’s never clever to dismiss Celtic.

“It’s history now that we won 5-0 and Hearts lost 2-0.

“I think I still owe [Albert Kidd] a pint!”

-Davie Hay on winning the league at Love St in 1986.

The book’s great, reading the step-by-step accounts of what happened from the managers’ view, you’ll love it.  I know I’m biased but it’s the best thing CQN has done, a wee bit of our history set down on record.

The best thing that could happen now is that the Companies and individuals who are owed money from the Old Rangers should get a copy of that statement and shut them down and demand they get what is owed to them. I doubt very much it will happen but surely the gangsters at Ibrokes have opened the door for them ? H.H.

Are you listening HMRC ? This guy has the right idea, if they are the same club they should pay their debt’s each and every last one of them. The message from the SFA and the Darnel is loud and clear, Liquidate your company, keep your brand and customers. You don’t have to play by the rules, if you don’t want to.

    Hail Hail

  2. How many lies in one Sevco statement?

“Dundee United introduced a late argument stating Rangers should only be awarded compensation for the training and development of Charlie Telfer for 2 years instead of the 10 years that he was with the Club. They argued the Club in its current form has only existed for two years.

It is disappointing Dundee United tried to pursue this tiresome, legally incorrect and provocative argument given that it has been repeatedly confirmed by the football authorities in Scotland and beyond that administration and liquidation of the companies that owned the Club did not break the continuity of the Club’s history or its record of honours won.”

Vespacide. Why not a petition from Celtic fans to be sent to HMRC along with a copy of the statement.Like you I feel that statement should be looked at closely there is something in it that makes them confident enough to put it out in the public domain H.H.

  10. The Battered Bunnet on

The Telfer issue is a complex one, not a cut and dried situation. Until (and unless)there’s a written decision in the public domain, we can only guess as to the reasoning.

The complexity flows from the circumstances:

In order to protect and encourage the development of youth players in the Bosman era, players accrue a compensation sum for each year of their development with a registered club.

In effect, this means that if a player elects to leave a club at the end of his contract, the club will receive a sum from the player’s new club to reflect the investment they have made in the player’s development to date.

Where more than one club has invested to develop the player, the compensation is distributed accordingly.

The complexity in this case arises not from the issue of whether compensation is due – it absolutely is – but to whom it is due.

The player was with ‘Rangers’ from aged 12, ‘Rangers’ being the SFA licensed ‘club’ Rangers plc.

However, ‘Rangers’ – the SFA licensed club – ceased to trade in 2012.

Additionally, ‘Rangers’ had a legal framework whereby the registrations or other economic interest in their youth players was owned – wholly or in part – by Rangers Youth Development Ltd.

The proceeds from the sale of youth players were due – wholly or in part – to RYD Ltd as part of the funding structure of the entity.

RYD Ltd was dissolved in 2013.

R plc was placed into liquidation in 2012.

RIFC/TRFC was incorporated and began trading in 2012, having purchased the assets of R plc.

Clearly, RIFC/TRFC invested in the development of Telfer in the period since 2012, and consequently are due to be compensated for that investment.

Prior to 2012, the investment was made by R plc via its RYD Ltd subsidiary, although the debenture holders of subsidiary had an economic interest in any proceeds, subject to terms unknown.

Which entity is due how much of what Training Compensation for Telfer can only be speculated upon, but I would be surprised if the Liquidators of R plc do not consider the interests of their Creditors when news emerges that there’s a 6 figure dividend to be paid on the back of the investment made by the liquidated company.

  11. Ah well I am surprised you are all surprised.

The great cover up continues and moves into a new level. Celtic remain silent.

Cheated for years, called paranoid, robbed of trophies.

And what do celtic do? Nothing. And then tell us we need compeittion.

In a year or two they will be cheating and you will be called paranoid.

    Plus de change…..

  12. I can’t believe anyone is surprised by this decision. I’m not upset in the slightest – I expected it. I disagree of course, but then my opinion is nothing to do with it. Scottish football is a corrupt game run for the benefit of one club. Why the surprise and angst?

  13. Greeninbingley on

Is that statement from “Rangers FC” for real?

Seriously? I thought it was an AwNaw spoof.

The supremacist, self-entitled, arrogant, dismissive, apartheid, shameless scum.

They are bullying their non-existent ‘continuity’ through, with a compliant SFA – on the very day their liquidation was set in stone.

That outrageous statement must be dealt with, and laughed at.

  14. The Rangers are rubbing everyone’s noses in it in a TD Girfuy kind of way. They are not tip toeing round it and are prepared to push it all of the way while all of the club’s dive for cover. Much will depend on how the Club’s deal with this.

Time now for creditors to expose their schizophrenia with some sort of a test case. At least embarrass them but having said that they have no shame.

SFA now need to be called out in some way on this.

Sick to death with these cheating scumbags running with the hare and hunting with the hounds and not only getting away with it but revelling in it.

Time for Celtic to formally push Resolution 12.

Well I agree with your idea for a fans petition, and I also agree that this rushed pompus press release has the potential to drop the SFA in hot water too. The concept that it’s ok to liquidate your company and carry on as before is preposterous, and dangerous.

The following future sums will accrue to the Liquidation estate in respect of the onward sale of

Jelavic from Everton to Hull City AFC.

    • A total of £37,500 payable in 5 instalments to January 2016.

    • £75,000 due to Hull City retaining English Premier League status in 2013/14.

    • A further £75,000 will become payable on 31 May 2015 if Hull City retain English Premier

League status in season 2014/15 and Jelavic remains registered as a Hull City player.

  23. The huns contention is that the club and company are (and always have been) different. In that case nothing is due to the club and the question is which company the compo is due to – the liquidated company or the new company? Or perhaps the compo should be split – 2 years for the new (2 year old) company and the rest to BDO who are still liquidating the old company.
