Bin sentiment and compassion

215

We always think of ourselves as on the side of the underdog.  Tomorrow, we are the protagonist against the world’s underdog.  It does not matter that Shakhtar Donetsk are seeded higher than us, or recorded the kind of win in Germany last week that no Celtic team has ever been able to dream of, the world wants them to win.

Thousands of Ukrainian war refugees will pack into the Municipal Stadium, Warsaw, to express their strong nationhood and support Shakhtar.  It will be an incredibly emotional night for all of them.

The first thing Ange Postecoglou and his players must do is consign all of that to the bin.  They need to find similar oceans of resources available to their opponents.  If we are not suitably aggressive against a formidable team, we will lose and face an uphill challenge to remain in Europe after the group stage.  Draw, and progress to the Champions League knockout stages remains open.

What happens on the park will be determined by what happens in the minds of the Celtic players.  To match Shakhtar, we must be compassionless, clinical and unforgiving.  Sentiment and comradeship can wait until fulltime.

  1. Hi Scullybhoy…curious how you think it’d b your Celtic quiz team when you wouldn’t make it lol

There is such a google function as reverse image search ;-))

  2. Basset was prone to some misplaced passes. A couple hit straight out across the field for shies giving up possession. He did well enough defensively against Mo Salah. However from corners Van Dyke had four or five free headers.

Wasn’t it Patsy Gallagher who said to Paddy Connolly (I think) “ don’t get any ideas about you being a great player. Just run down the wing and get the ball into McGrory and make sure the lace is facing away from him so that it doesn’t scratch his forehead” ?

Good night to you and all fellow Celtic SUPPORTERS.

  7. Hello again all you young rebels.

From a lovely sunny Melbourne this morning 🥵

steady beat to pace myself 🏃

Thanks for the vid yesterday, fascinating watching that.

As you say, it would be very interesting to find out who the

bhoy was, who had the storage unit.

Loved the bit when the big yank, on looking through the

various sports tops came across the Celtic one and said

    “ Wow that’s a nice one “

Game night tonight, or early morning rise for us, take our

chances we’ll win with goals to spare. 🇮🇪

My original comment was to do with self awareness, good fholk on here who obsess about Football not understanding British subjects’ obsession with the Monarchy.

And that was addressed in my initial reply – Nobody on here is under any delusion or fails to understand that others are obsessed with their imaginations of the Royal Family. We all lived through the era of Diana grief- this is nothing new. So you have started with a false assumption again.

What we are asserting is the right not to join in and the right to protest. Only one side of the debate is being overlooked or repressed. It may be a minority opinion but it is large enough. Let those who wish to revere and be subjects do so but let us opt out of their very public private grief. Footballers In Scotland (bar Ibrox) did not request time off to grieve but it was imposed. Most TV shows did not ask to be cancelled in order to witter aimlessly over the same ground until they hit absurd levels of reference (bees, bearskins, corgi trainers and showbiz psychologists)

Now, I know little of Irish History and maybe some Irish fholk could put us right but I don’t think Irishmen had to fight to get their country back 800 years ago. I believe that quote refers to invaders from England, Normans I would have thought.

Of course the English managed to eventually increase their foothold in Ireland by introducing sectarianism.

The Norman English invaded in 1169. Irishmen fought them. Scots adventurers like Robert the Bruce’s brother had similar designs too but the Irish killed Robert’s brother Edward and it ended. All of these people owed allegiance to Rome- no sectarianism was required. The Plantations began in the mid-16th and early 17th century, so being generous, at least 400 years of the 800 years occupation required no religious sectarianism.

As I have said before, and of the Scottish Greens, Establsishments will use any tools including sectarianism but , in this case, the Irish were not converting in sufficient numbers to act as buffers to English rule, so they sent some Scots over to oppress more locally. These people were roughly co-religionists and were sent to reinforce England’s national interests in Ireland, which now included a pro-Protestant, anti-Popish element rather than the purely National occupation it had been up to then. Their grip was not in much danger at any time; these were pre-emptive and strategic moves of national control.

Whatever you count as sectarianism (limiting it to religion) will not stop any movement towards Independence, nor will conflict amongst and between religions or classes or political positions cease in any new nations or pre-existing ones.

    ————————————

Now, we have a game soon and I’d rather talk of the Shakhtar game now and I have nothing new to say about old Lizzie, on class, political or religious grounds. I have been disgusted and disappointed by what I have seen recently but not surprised or befuddled, as you thought.

But, I’ve made my statements and stand by them.

I will now concentrate on my jinx status, having predicted a Celtic win

Ange is not the keeper of people’s obligations

All eyes focus on Warsaw tonight, Ange was so down disappointed last week, his belief in his philosophy is absolute, the team is mostly predictable Hart, Juranovic, Carter Vickers, Jenz and Taylor, McGregor, Hatate, and O’Reily, hopefully, amongst the goals, Jota, Kyogo, Abada/Maeda, with Shakhter hoping to use the emotion of the home crowd and the war to drive them on, Angeball with its creed of we never stop, this will be an open game, Angeball comes with a guarantee of excitement, this will be another edge of our seat game for the Celtic fans watching, I hope our antipodean man has that big cheesy grin at the end of 90 mins, I love his commitment to his beliefs ethos to how his teams play, no predictions

    SFtBs @11:55 PM,

And that was addressed in my initial reply – Nobody on here is under any delusion or fails to understand that others are obsessed with their imaginations of the Royal Family. We all lived through the era of Diana grief- this is nothing new. So you have started with a false assumption again.

How could I have “started under a false assumption”, when you first replied to my comments after my points had already made!?

The point is simply this, fholk obssessing over subjects obsessing the passing of her Majesty and the Proclamation of the new King.

    The voyeurs of the voyeurs.

We can turn the TV off, we don’t have to be manipulated into a response, whether positive or negative, we can watch as little or as much as we wish to; we can wallow, we can read a book, we can differentiate between what we can change and what we can’t, what we have influence over and what we do not.

Today, I’ll be mainly obsessing about Celtic Glasgow playing in Warsaw.

This may turn out to be the most crucial match for us in the group, a win this evening, and win we can and the group is wide open with two winnable matches at home.

Good morning Sean. The last 2 Bhoys were John Halpin and John Colquhan.. A wee bit nervous about the game tonight and dont have BT Sports any more. I would gladly take a draw.

I thank AN TEARMANN for keeping us all aware of our history – THANK YOU!

On that note in memory of George:

It was on January 12, 1966 that Celtic beat Dynamo Kyiv 3-0 and headed towards a 4-1 European Cup-Winners’ Cup quarter-final aggregate win.

This was the night that a 16-year-old George Connelly thrilled the crowd with an astonishing display of ball juggling – walking around the perimeter of the playing field without letting the ball drop.

  17. Thankfully I managed to take my good lady and myself away from the madness of the past days and today we return home, in time to watch the Celts in Europe.

I am quietly confident of a victory in Warsaw. Shakhtar are no mugs but our Bhoys have the ability and the class to win the points.

    3-1 Celtic.

    Hail Hail.

  18. Warning – non-Celtic post.

Northern Irish schoolboy Christopher Atherton became the youngest senior footballer in the United Kingdom at 13 years and 329 days old when he played for Glenavon on Tuesday.

The teenager came on as a second-half substitute in their 6-0 win over Dollingstown in the League Cup.

And he made a quick impact, providing an assist for Glenavon’s sixth goal.

Atherton breaks a 42-year-old record set by Eamon Collins, who played for Blackpool aged 14 years and 323 days.

Collins made his Blackpool debut on 9 September 1980.

    >>>>

I was intrigued by what happened to Eamon Collins and……….

Clubs played for: Blackpool, Southampton, Portsmouth, Gillingham, Colchester United, Exeter City, Farnborough Town, Crediton United, Elmore (1980-1996)

    Born: 1965

    Birthplace: Inchicore, Dublin, Ireland

    Position: Midfielder

Biography: Small in size but mighty in stature, Eamonn Collins became the youngest player to ever appear in a professional English match. He turned out at 14 years 323 days old for Blackpool. Alan Ball was the seaside club’s player-manager at the time, but it didn’t work out and Ball returned to Southampton. Collins, not yet 16, followed him after only that solitary appearance for the Tangerines. He only played one further game for Saints before he moved along the coast to Portsmouth – again under Ball. He would go on to play for the World Cup winner at two other clubs in Colchester and Exeter City before retiring. Collins went on to become a manager at lower and non league level and is now a players’ agent based in Dublin. His mentor Ball described Collins as “diminutive”, he never grew but had a shrewd football brain and never let me down.”

So, who is the youngest Bhoy to score for Celtic in Europe???????????????

  19. TOMBSTONE on 13TH SEPTEMBER 2022 7:56 PM

Tks agree Stockport is a shithole . Fiddlers Green looking best bet will give it a try..

  20. Speaking ahead of the game, Ange Postecoglou said: “Every game in the Champions League will be tough and every opposition will give us different challenges and whatever is out there tomorrow we need to be ready.

“As I said after the Real Madrid game, I was a bit frustrated and disappointed because it’s not just playing our football for a certain amount of time.

‘In the context of who we were playing against – one of, if not the best, in the world – for us to match them by playing our football was encouraging, but I didn’t see any reason why it couldn’t continue beyond the time it did.’

“The disappointing thing was we conceded straight after the first goal and we had to stay in the game. We should have got back to it and kept playing our football and in the end you lose 3-0.

“We could have been more competitive for longer in that game but that’s the level we’re at and that’s what you’ve got to do. Sixty minutes is never enough. You have to see the game out and be resilient when you need to.”

  21. For Moritz Jenz, last week’s game against Real Madrid was his first experience of Champions League football as a player.

The German could feature again tomorrow night, with Carl Starfelt out injured and he is fully aware of the threat that Shakhtar Donetsk will pose.

The central defender said: “For me, it’s another great match for my career and for the team and another great game to play.

“We’re prepared and focused to play tomorrow and put in a good performance.

‘Last week’s game we went head-to-head with Real Madrid for 60 minutes but we need to continue to be more clinical with our chances and see the game out.’

“We expect Shakhtar to let us have the ball and try hit us on the counter, but we’re used to this in Scotland. We have the ball a lot and we’re prepared and ready for the match.

“Obviously every away game is a tough challenge but it’s up to us to play the game and be cool in the heads and be clinical.

“I think going into every match, we need to get the result so it’s up to us to start strong and perform well and be ready for the opponent.”

  22. Virginia Wade, Jimmy Tarbuck, Gyles Brandreth and the queens butcher fae Ballater.

They’ve done it to death now.
