BIRTHDAY BHOY AT CROSSROADS

LIAM SCALES celebrates his 25th birthday today with his Celtic career at the crossroads.

The versatile Republic of Ireland defender admitted he was in the dark about his immediate future at the treble winners, as CQN reported last month.

Scales spent all of last season on loan at Aberdeen, coincidentally the Hoops’ Premiership opponents in Sunday’s High Noon showdown at Pittodrie.

CONGRATULATIONS…Callum McGregor shares the joy with Liam Scales after the Irishman’s goal in Celtic’s 3-0 league win over Dundee United at Tannadice in December 2021.

The left-back or centre-half figured in each of the pre-season games in Japan and Dublin plus the second-half of the James Forrest Testimonial Match against Athletic Bilbao a week ago at Parkhead where the team came back from a 2-1 deficit at the interval to win 3-2.

However, Scales was missing from the match day squad for the opening Premiership game of the season as the champions overcame Ross County 4-2 on Flag Day in the east end of Glasgow on Saturday.

That omission flagged up doubts about the Irishman’s part in Brendan Rodgers’ plans for the team and, after playing the entire match in the 1-1 draw with Wolves in the Aviva Stadium in Dublin, the back-four operator admitted: “I don’t know what’s ahead of me.

“I just want to do as well as I can and make as good of an impression as I can.”

Interestingly, the returning manager observed: “Liam’s excellent and I really like him. He’s an intelligent boy.

HEAD BHOY…Liam Scales clears his lines against Dundee United on Tayside.

“He’s come over, obviously gone out to Aberdeen on loan and done really well. He’ll be at an age where he’ll want to play.

“But we’re in no rush, I’ll just assess it and see where it is. We’ll take it from there.”

Scales cost £600,000 when he joined from Shamrock Rovers in August 2021.

Rodgers has 23 days before the August transfer deadline to make up his mind on the qualities of the defender who is under contract until June 2025.

In the meantime, all at CQN and Celtic supporters everywhere wish Liam a very Hoopy Birthday!
