Biton influence on central mid

768

It wasn’t just the result, which was enormously satisfying, but the manner of Celtic’s performance yesterday was equally gratifying.  We passed with speed and precision, creating space between what was often two blocks of five defenders.  Hearts were in a sorry state but despite enduring the consequences of being unable to pay their dues, they remain considerably more resourceful than many of the lower league teams which have caused Celtic problems in cup competitions in recent seasons.

We finally got to see what the fuss over Nir Biton was all about.  He brought control, time and space to the play.  In particular I liked the way he tried to retain possession.  Hope we see more of him in the weeks to come.

While most attention was drawn to the striker position following defeat to Milan last week, central midfield, bereft of recent departures, the injured and suspended, was just as under-resourced.  The opportunity is there for Biton to grab a place for himself, just as Victor did a couple of years ago.

  1. Guys,

mhaybe Thomas gravesen could buy us a striker to make up for being sh*te for us!

    http://uk.eurosport.yahoo.com/blogs/early-doors/gravesen-makes-fortune-retirement-moves-vegas-stunning-model-113143405.html

Thomas Gravesen didn’t have a bad a career as a footballer.

The international midfielder got to play for massive clubs like Everton, Real Madrid, Hamburg and Celtic and represented Denmark at the World Cup and European Championships.

Coming off that cloud and into retirement would be tough for most players, especially as Gravesen called it quits at the age of just 32 in 2009.

At the time he was blasted by the Danish press for throwing his life away. He was in a relationship with a porn star called Kira Eggers and comment pieces in the country suggest he was washed up and on a slippery slope to ruin.

However, Gravesen has proved all his doubters wrong and then some.

According to Danish newspaper BT, Gravesen invested his career earnings in a number of financial businesses and struck the jackpot.

He is now worth over €100m (£82.61m –about enough to bid for Gareth Bale) and has just announced his second ‘retirement’ at the age of 37.

How is going to spend this retirement? Well he has just moved to Las Vegas with his latest squeeze – stunning Czech-born American model Kamila Persse – where he plans to spend the rest of his days living the life of luxury and indulging in his passion for gambling.

According to the paper: poker, roulette and blackjack are amongst his favourite games.

It might be tough to recreate the buzz of the Premier League or the Bernabeu but as silver medals go – it doesn’t sound too bad!

Fantastic performance Celtic 7-0 with no strikers on the score sheet. If there is such a thing as a downside it has to be that. Pukki lacks confidence and looks out of his depth. Stokes not a lot better. A penalty box fox is required to finish of the moves. Nice if we got 2 in January sales.

I remember well a time back in May 1998 when Bobby Tait in his last game as a referree made an “honest mistake” with his timekeeping, adding an extra 4 minutes in which Ally Mitchell scored the winner for Killie..

We all know what happened the following week. :-)

    Indeed we did,bud.

But SFTB’s point was the scoring of five, not four.

In that,he was largely correct, but it wasn’t as rare as he suggests.

And,as you say with your reminder of how often we scored four, not far away from a common occurrence.

We may never have beaten teams 5-0 on a regular basis, but in the two seasons between 2001-2003 we equalled or bettered that a dozen times.

And we were disappointed every time it didnae happen.

I make it only 8 times in those two seasons that we equaled or bettered 5:0.

The equivalent figure for the past 3 years is 8 times so hardly a huge reduction in the frequency of drubbings. It certainly does not account for the euphoria we felt and expressed then and the misery we express now.

I was certainly not disappointed when we failed to secure an easy win. I take much more joy from hard won and merited close victories against bigger teams than I do from flat track bullying. The Ajax 2:1 game was far more important to me than yesterday, even though it was not as entertaining.

    Managing expectations?

I expect my team to muller the opposition every time they go onto that pitch.

Anything less,at least domestically,is selling the fans short, and explains the disquiet amongst us.

I manage expectations no more than you. In trying to point out that we are in a great period of achievement by our club, I can argue that I am on stronger grounds than those who try to tell us about some mythical past of constant 5:0 wins and who are trying to manage expectations differently by creating discontent.

What, in your Celtic supporting experience, gave you the expectation that Celtic would regularly mueller the opposition and that, anything less meant you were short changed?

We have won more games than we have lost or drawn. We are a hugely successful club.

Yet, we have lost more leagues that we have contested than we have ever won. We have lost more cups that we have contested than we have ever won. Our title and cup winning ratio in these past 13 years has been as high as it ever was, outside of the 66 to 74 period. Yet, on here we are regularly upbraided with the “worst team in my lifetime” nonsense, leveled mostly at WGS and NFL but, strangely, less so at Tony Mowbray.

We have as much an accurate recollection of the 80s and 90s as the huns have over penalties for liquidation.

Regular cries for 5:0 victories is a rallying call by DBBIA before every match but he does it tongue in cheek. There never were halcyon days populated by regular drubbings, not even in 66 to 74 and not really that much different in 2000-05 either.

I signed up for Celtic “win, lose or draw”. I never ever demanded regular 5:0’s.

Enjoy them when they occur but if you expect regular repeats you will be disappointed. You have set the terms for your own disappointment. You have created a hurdle that was not placed on managers before. Winning a title was what we wanted; if we could not get that, a cup would be fine. If we could not get that, some signs of promise for the future would be great.

Now, in the midst of being one of the most rewarded generations of Celtic supporters, we are “demanding” better results at the threat of disquiet.

That is not the Celtic Way for me.
