Bitter lessons await

240

At the risk of touching on a topic that is best left until the end of the season, Leicester City were relegated to the third tier of English football yesterday, 10 years after being champions and five since they won the FA Cup.

The title win, Champions League campaign (and subsequent European runs), and revenue from selling some of the countries hottest talent at their peak, should have led to the reinforcement of the model which took them there and a lengthy period of top flight football.

Instead, they overspent and lost £92.5m in season 2021-22, then did the same the following season, resulting in am £89.5m loss, leading to the departure of manager Brendan Rodgers.  Winning the FA Cup against Chelsea in 2021 is one of the greatest football days for any Leicester fan, but it provided the seed for their downfall.  Confidence was sky-high, so there was no resistance when the football department wanted to change the model.

What’s it got to do with us?  Successful business models are difficult to put in place and easy to destroy.  Once they are gone, there is a lag before performance catches up, but it inevitably does.  We have football games to win over the next five weeks, but whether we win the league or not, I have concerns.

You’ll doubtless get it in the neck from the Brendan disciples, Paul, but what you say is no less true for that.

Celtic has conspired to realise Dave King’s deck of cards prophesy.

Unpredictable business at times, football. St Johnstone bounce back up after a season, Coventry took 25 years from Stracchi’s relegation.

I think my concerns would be deeper if we DO win it. Confirmation that all is working well and keep going as we are.

  11. Celtic being compared to Leicester City. Laughable. The latter’s position in English football is entirely different to ours in Scotland.

Celtic are successful domestically and the model worked at that level but it stopped working as we didn’t get stronger. As football changes every year we get smaller as a club and so we need to attract even more inexperienced players to try and develop them and sell them on. Is that all we should ever do?

If so what is the point?

We should try and attract better managers and better players to maximise the potential of the football club. We should never accept being a feeder club for richer clubs and leagues.

  13. Successful Business Models DO NOT sell their 3 best attackers / goal scorers and NOT replace even 1 of them.

Successful Business Models SHOULD put the best team out on the pitch that they can, so as to win league’s and then with forward planning and recruitment go on to qualify for the Champions League.

Successful Business Models follow ALL of the above season after season….thats why they are called Successful Business Models….

    We ain’t one of them….

Brendan got handed the keys did he, Paul?

    Fair enough … IF true.

I’m not sighted on the resultant change of the model at Leicester … so any facts supporting that gratefully received.

    What i do know?

They made a truly bizarre decision to sell Kasper and promote a back-up keeper who was nowhere near EPL level.

IMHO, this was the biggest factor in them failing to scrape to 17th place.

Brendan bought a couple of big haddies at £15m a pop

… Vestegaard and John Souttar’s brother.

Brendan got bumped in April – he didn’t walk.

The dead cat (concrete block) bounce from the new manager didn’t happen.

Other than that I know very little.

As I alluded to last night, it will be interesting to see if ‘overseas billionaires’ have more staying power than the ones from Motherwell.

  19. Cheers Bada – so appointed rather than process under way is good news but to reflect on another bloggers view, it is a worry given the mess this season has been manager wise that it is the same folk involved in this appointment.

Hopefully they get it right this time 🙏 🙏

  25. I share your fear about winning the games we need to, because our squad and team has been shredded of the good replaced by punts, who in their right mind thinks 10m spent on Balikwisha and Tounekti is money well spent for Celtic’s future needs? Add them to the 2 players away back to Japan those on loan and coming back and you see the problems in the football department, the model is not working, we sell anyone of value and replace them with rubbish.

  26. If we are going to do comparisons with England. according to the Price of Football podcast the only English team to post “real” profit this year was Luton Town. Who had back to back relegations, and profit is largely due to parachute payments.

Are Luton Town carrying out a successful business model ? Are they a successful football club ?
