Bitter sweet accounts

1056

Detail in our annual accounts for the year to 30 June 2014, released yesterday, are bitter sweet.  It was a good year financially but the successes were underpinned by qualification for the Champions League.  This season’s revenue will be lucky to rise much above £50m, from last season’s £64m.

I see lots of comment on Peter Lawwell’s £400k bonus.  The key figure to concentrate on executive pay is the basic (in this case £524k), not the bonus.  Celtic executive pay, including manager, chief exec and scouts, should heavily incentivise qualification for the Champions League.  If we’re in the Champions League, all other objectives become possible.  Failure to qualify brings a range of risks; so the execs should feel the pain of failure in the pocket.

Basic pay should be appropriate for the work (this goes for all staff at the club, of course), but there is ample room to incentivise everyone, from executives, to kiosk staff, to stewards, on club performance or service objectives, as appropriate.  Would doing so tackle many of the stewarding and service issues we see regularly? Would be interesting to find out.

corkcelt……I have been in RD camp from the start but

it is a must win game tomorrow, anything else and he’s

    a dead man walking.

  2. CC,

    I might think the opposite,

the policy was not prudent , it was risk adverse, other than “roi projects”.

We wont have a war chest, we will be skint because less attendance & no cl money.

profit before qualification this year, sammi and the management team allowed to go, sales made, and no quick reinvestment.

loan signings, fine if it was 1 or 2 big names, remember PL used to talk about A listers.

a rookie manager that was to be head of youth. i despair.

Cost savings should start in the boardroom.

    PL OUT.

    Bit of a moot point.

All those Celtic ‘fans’ saying they have had ènough, never going back ,things have never been so bad, etc. where were you in the macari/Brady/Kelly/ muggleton years? Or were you not Tims then? Now that was grim.

    ==========

I’ll be chucking it in terms of emotional and probably financial investment not because a club called TRFC are playing against us but because I have yet to have conclusive proof that I’m paying to watch a straight game.

I have seen evidence this is not so and I want a reassurance that either that evidence is false and so the narrative it paints is false

    Or

The evidence is true and that changes are going to take place that will give me some assurance I’m not been treated as a mug.

This is not in Celtic’s hands alone, but without any indication that change is underway, I’m out.

As an easy example I would want SPFL clubs to be responsible for club licensing with independent oversight to check a few cases ( like drug testing) and membership of the SFA dependent on a licence being granted by the SPFL.

I’d want spot checks on player registration, as in having the right to do so put in players contracts by an independent committee, introduced.

I’d want to see the criteria for getting membership of the SFA defined and not left to SFA discretion( It should mirror club licensing).

In short the rules for governing Scottish football became obsolete when RFC started using unannounced ebts and hiding side letters to players and I want the relationship between SPFL and SFA changed totally and old rules changed and those who used ambiguity in them to avoid proper policing of them removed from office.

If supporters of all clubs insisted on this before ST renewal next year it might even happen.

Otherwise God forbid I’ll be in same camp as KevJ but I’ll be putting my energy ( what’s left of it) into something more meaningful than winding up CQN.

“SFTB ….You were doing good until this part….the club didnae try tae sell Jimmy McGrory it was the “Great Wullie Maley”.

Although I appreciate all the historical information, the distinction you make is more than moot.

Willie Maley was the Lawwell/Strachan, Lawwell/Lennon or Lawwell/Deila of his day. As were Robert Kelly and Jock. They all sold, or tried to sell, our best players before their time. The only one in the list who was clearly a spent force was, unfortunately, Jinky.

The sin was evident throughout our history and it had less excuse available to it in terms of our economic disadvantage. We were for most of our history no less or more a football revenue earning machine than were Liverpool, Man United, Arsenal or Man. City. They chose to spend more of their earned income on player wages than we did at Celtic. Yet our troops never rebelled on football matters.

That is the sole point I was making.

I am on board with the disconnect about fan treatment and Scottish Football administration manoeuvres since the late 90s. I think our club has been cryptic to the point of being incoherent in explaining their approach there.

But I cannot get on board with the view that the Board or Majority Shareholder are responsible for all our position as an also-ran in European football, a status shared by Anderlecht, Ajax, Sparta Prague, Legia Warsaw, Rapid Vienna, Ferencvaros, Red Star, Dinamo Zagreb and every other big club in a small league.

  7. Auldheid.

Great summary of why it’s more than a decision about whether to watch the hoops v Sevco.

However, maybe one omission in your list of assurances required, and maybe it’s too hard to sort.

What about the referees? If there’s no action on that, it remains a bent game.

  8. I don’t agree that we’ve not spent money on players, we’ve jut spent mot of it on dross. A million or two here and there adds up when the players don’t perform.

A three million player sin’t sure to be a hit but the better the player the less the gamble.

Occasional higher fee/earners could make the difference quality wise.

  10. Big win for the Hoops this weekend, can see no reason to expect less. 3-0 for me with Scepovic scoring

Cannae wait for the trip over next Thurs as well

Hail Hail and have a great weekend

  11. We should (but won’t) start with a front three of Guidetti through the middle and Griffiths/McGregor playing either side of him. Have a midfield three of Henderson, Brown & Johansen behind them with a back four of Matthews, Lustig, VVD & Mulgrew. CG in goals.

Ambrose, Izzy & Mukaso have had long journeys away on international duty so should be left out the squad. Stokes & Commons have been poor all season so should be left on the bench along with Kayal, Denayer, O’Connell, Scepovic and Zaluska

Mood of Blog lifts as next Celtic game approaches

  13. It seems every game we face is a must win for Ronny now and that his jacket peg’s shoogliness will never be fixed. That is what comes from a league record of 2 wins, two draws and two defeats in our last 6 league games. Creditable Europa results and getting by the first round of the LC have brought no respite.

However 3 or 4 wins in the next 5 games consigns that poor start to a short term historical dustbin. Neil Lennon was in trouble in an October march in Kilmarnock not long back and he survived because the team started winning. Gordon Strachan too was in trouble because of his European start and though h was quickly competitive in the league race, the jury remained out on Gordon to such an extent that it only took one dropped league for him to go with our curses following him.

I suspect so many minds have been made up that even a healthy run of wins in the league and a qualification from the Europa Group will not convince many.

I fear that, as with many things Celtic, we keep raising the bar of expectations to a level we never asked of previous managers. Big Billy was not judged on our failures in Europe. In the days of Macari and Brady we were desperate to even have a chance to fail, so little European football did we see.

The expectation that may kill Ronny’s time with Celtic is that he will be the man to bring a more pleasing style to Celtic. That was the fault which killed WGS’s Celtic career despite his great successes, and though Neil improved the playing style, he did not do so by an amount that would please the CP faithful.

So far, United game apart, RD has neither maintained or improved the results or the football playing style. I will happily settle for a short term improvement in the results so that he can be afforded the patience to see if he can make us a modern fit football team in the longer run.

But, as I say, I fear he may fall between a lot of stools (no pun intended).

    £120k for a CEO

    I admire your passion.

We are a £60m +\- turnover business; Imho PL is overpaid, but economic reality is you won’t get a quality CEO at that sort of money.

Pay that level and you will get a lightweight, or enthusiastic amateur, and as we are seeing with our new manager, CP isn’t the place to learn your trade.

Good post above by sftb. We expect and crave the Deila run to begin, game by game, and his season has been punctuated with European games, which tested us to the full.

The Zagreb game being a case in point.

Because we were pinned back after taking a lead we defended well, and took three points.

We are never pegged back to that extent in the SPL, (Aberdeen maybe) but can lose to Hamilton?

I have a proposal on refereeing that again requires clear separation of responsibilities. I’ve made it before but here it is again.

Make SFA responsible for recruitment and supply of referees and SPFL for monitoring their performance.

In effect make refereeing a service the SFA offer to the SPFL and if their recruitment and training are not good enough the SPFL are free to select from elsewhere according to matching standards. England or Estonia, no matter, as long as set standards used.

Make refereeing a profession where the best get rewarded for excellence, the poorest finding a lower level.

By separating supply and monitoring you remove the ability the likes of Dallas had to produce a desired result by appointing a pal like Dougie McDonald to a key game.

Good for clubs, good for good referees and good for football, the most short sighted brainless industry we allow ourselves to devote much of our time to.
