Bitterest pill, hilarious, angry, ranting

1510

News that the Maribor game later this month is on the season book has setup a dramatic climax to what will be remembered for decades as a remarkable month in our history.  We didn’t ask for this situation.  As we drifted away from Murrayfield, our thoughts were only of Celtic’s abject display, but nine days and two Uefa Disciplinary hearings later, we’re through to the Champions League play-off round next week.

For Legia Warsaw, the pill is unbearably bitter.  So much so, they had to appeal to Uefa, and on to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, despite scant cause.  CAS who will eventually be asked to determine if Uefa’s rules were interpreted correctly.  Which they were.  The consequences for Legia are so abrupt their reactions are understandable.

Football affects us in ways which are not always beneficial.  There was nothing Legia fans could do to remove their distress this past week, but reading comments, by fans of another Scottish club on this subject, has given a glimpse into the human condition.

The emotional investment by some Scottish football fans in Legia’s forlorn cause has evidently resulted in untold misery.  Celtic fell into the Clyde and came out holding a winning Euromillions ticket.  It was unplanned for, random and undeserved, but it happened and, right now, Celtic are the luckiest team in the world.

At a time when their phoenix club is falling apart before their eyes, our unearned good fortune has caused volumes of hilarious, angry, ranting.  Efforts to explain it as a consequence of immoral plots (as well as running the Celtic, the SFA, the SPFL, Glasgow City Council and The Commonwealth, Peter Lawwell also manipulates Uefa’s Disciplinary Body) demonstrate classic evidence of our old friend, Cognitive Dissonance.

We were blind lucky, accept that, or continue to give the rest of the world new and innovative ways to enjoy their football.  It’s not worth the dissonance.

It’s been an interesting week in the media.  Neil McCann’s excitable misinterpretation of the rules on Wednesday was a highlight, but the paper which brought you ‘news’ that Celtic wanted Dan Pertrescu to be manager, who declined as he was warned the club have problems by Neil Lennon, subsequently got a second story when they ran a properly sourced article denying ‘reports’ Neil spoke to Pertrescu.

I’m also loving reading those who in the media were spinning anti-Celtic nonsense that Neil left because he wasn’t happy with the player budget, now suggesting he could take over Crystal Palace, after Tony Pulis left because he wasn’t happy with the player budget.

Nonsense like this is never random, it has a purpose………..

On a related subject, I’m gutted for Palace, their fans, and for Pulis. The economics of the entire English league structure doesn’t work. Well-run clubs with good managers will be weeded out and relegated, as crazy debt-junkies inflate the bubble a little longer. Scottish football may be poor, but there are only two of our 42 clubs in any sort of financial danger.

Flag Day tomorrow, get along early, give Fergus a warm welcome back, and bring some change for The Kano Foundation bucket collection on the way in. Remember to join Fergus, Jim Craig and others from the Celtic Graves Society for the Jimmy Quinn event at Kilsyth Cemetery.

Thank you to everyone who gave so generously to Mary’s Meals by entering our competition for tickets in the comfy seats tomorrow.  I’m proud of every one of you.  My thanks also to Magners for helping out.  The competition is now closed, winners will be informed by email shortly, so check your inbox!

MWD. Ok. Regardless of the person who runs wings over Scotland I have an aversion both to their tactics (bullying, demeaning, spreading misinformation etc) but there is something about their iconography which makes me incredibly uneasy.

It is possible that ( I know) shortbread contacted Celtic to ask for a representitive to give Celtic’s side of the story. Had they done so, I would hope that Celtic would have told them ” Nothing to do with us. This is between LW and UEFA”.

It’s amazing how the narrative has developed. And in such an emotive manner. “Victims”, “punishments”, “relegated to the bottom tier” and of course the best of the lot being the notion that everything was fine until Craig Whyte took over.

Of course if they want to believe that then that’s fine by me! Only guarantees more trouble ahead for the phoenix club!

But as you rightly say, the authorities really need to get a grip and start running the game for all.

  11. bournesouprecipe on

Legia Warsaw’s reaction to their illimination from the CL is as understandable and as predictable as the anti Celtic bias that has swept through SMSM led Sevconia. It must have been so hard some days for ‘the media’ to have gotten out of bed to watch the institutionalised establishment club die, then two years later find out, that despite a charade, that they are indeed still dead.

Celtic are the only show in town, and still suffer an ever increasing liquidation backlash that has gone from a national pass time to raison d’être for some of SMSM. The scandalous coverage of Celtic’s good fortune is a classic example, of how Celtic are despised, outwith the Celtic family.

Imagine the headlines for a moment if you can, had the Legia Warsaw situation somehow been reversed and Celtic had made an administration error where VVD had been played whilst under a three match suspension? The focus would still have been on Celtic, but this time, their gross incompetence, brought upon themselves, through complete amateurism.

Celtic’s brief statement and subsequent inclusion of the Maribor game as a fans freebie, should draw a line under our UEFA break which was a long time coming, since we stood in the Jungle and watched real European cheats in action. I wish Legia nothing but luck as they will surely win the Europa Cup, if natural justice, is the ultimate judge?

They are a good side who struggled all season until the second game in Dublin against St.Pats, but they will toil as soon as they play a more compact European styled team, with the muscle and nous Celtic have lost overnight since the dissolution of NFL’s best pre planned, and laid out side.

Celtic face Maribor just like they faced the pre season up to and including Tottenham Hotspur, in a state of transition. The cards have been shuffled and reshuffled as RD plays cavalry charge football, with players that have little swash and a tendency to buckle.

The automatic re-inclusion of the fit at last James Forrest indeed underlined that RD’s vision of attacking at all costs, is indicative of the reasons we’re out, (but back in) Europe. The James Forrest led battle is one that works too infrequently, even when he’s augmented, with two tackling midfielders.

Winging your way to victory rarely works unless you have an aerial threat and Celtic certainly don’t, have a threat let alone in the air, and won’t have for the Slovenian game. The game plan has to change to succeed, because there are few Euro sides that play this style away from home, let alone attempting it with Celtic’s present level of strikers.

If RD doesn’t cover the midfield with Kayal, Biton, and whoever else he thinks can defend, there’s no chance of progress in Europe never mind in the SPL. So far, including the Perth breakthrough, I’m not convinced we’ll come out of the change in style, intact.

  12. Well MWD I am a committed no voter so I idly disagree but I have no desire to flog that particular dead horse (I’m flogging plenty of others!).

They resent the positivity with which mainland Europe regards us compared to their pet Huns.

Imagine a wildlife show on TV

The Scoddish media and their pet Huns are like a bullying creature who batter the wee creatures and eat all the food, yet seek the approval of their betters and become resentful when it is not forthcoming.

They are slowly beginning to appreciate that the rancid cesspit of self-serving Masonic incestuousness of the Minty/Scoddish media tartery has been “changed, changed utterly”

Wilsons article coming from a public service publically funded broadcaster is nothing short of disgraceful. The really disgraceful thing is that we expect it.

  18. Bournes part of my ongoing annoyance at the celtic board is indeed their ongoing lack of willingness to defend either the support or the club. Add to that the rabid anti celtic anti catholic rhetoric and you have a real issue.

While I understand many of you saying that celtic couldn’t speak. Well I agree they should get involved with Legia or UEFA they could most certainly take issue with the way that the MSM have rounded on us.

You can always make an excuse why it’s better to say nothing but part of their role is to defend the club and they aren’t doing it.

Thing is it’s an easy win for the club. You could drive a coach and horses through the MSM reporting flaws and it would help unify the support.

Another inaction I really can’t understand.

  19. Well joe there is probably more that unites us than divides. It’s just that we take opposing views on the main blog topivpc.
