Bitton deal, here’s an idea, just repay Mikes’ loan

475

Very pleased to hear Nir Bitton has signed a contract until 2020. Five years is an astonishing extension for a player who is clearly heading in the right direction. It gives Celtic assurance that they don’t need to worry about a key player’s contract running down for the foreseeable future.

Nir was the first manifestation of Ronny Deila’s player-improvement work. At the start of last year he was little more than a squad addition, a bit like Leigh Griffiths, but he’s since excelled in domestic and European football, as well as for Israel in the Euro qualifiers.

Let’s see if he can continue to improve.

I note the media going ‘a bit Tonto’ over Sports Direct’s insistence that the Rangers Former Players Benevolent Fund stop using trademarks they own. I know this will make many people swallow hard, but’s be clear, if the Celtic Former Players Association were selling merchandise bearing the Celtic crest the club would be saying “Cease and Desist that right now, Joe”. Same is true if you are a fan selling T-shirts or street vendor selling scarves.

Without making moral judgements, football clubs earn money from licensing their logos, you want to use it, you pay. You don’t pay, the club cannot discriminate between who they pursue and who they don’t, as such discriminatory behaviour would be a legitimate defence in law by a transgressor.

Sports Direct own thousands of logos and brands. They will have a department sweeping for infringements and they don’t strike me as the kind of company who let any slip through without action. I’d be amazed if Mike Ashley, or any senior SD staff, were even aware of the action.  Cease instructions will come out from the legal team without a second thought.

What remains galling to some is the fact that Newco have to take instructions from Sports Direct on use of logos and other IP. This, on top of the whole Fifa 2016 indignity, could be ended by repaying the Sports Direct £5m loan.

Why wouldn’t they stop the embarrassment and just pay Mike his money? He’s not going to cut a new deal, no positive accommodation is ever going to happen, all that lies ahead is more embarrassment, and the risk of Ashley taking genuinely draconic action to recover his loan.  I’m sure they money’s there to repay, right?

The above of course assumes that TRFC Ltd is a viable, trading entity when the time comes to settle the matter. That is by no means a given in the current circumstances.

In the event that TRFC Ltd or its holding company suffers an Insolvency, one might reasonably expect BDO to make a move to protect the Rangers plc Creditors’ interests. Whether that would be a simple claim, or a court application to reduce the D&P sale, is an interesting point to consider.

    Hmmm

    Good shout Paul

Very quiet on here when we’re winning and Celtic and Ronny Deila’s methods bear more fruit.

Imagine wanting to stay in a wee diddy league till 2020. Oh wait…………it’s a board trap to sell him, we don’t really want to keep good players and the sale will line P̶e̶t̶e̶r̶’̶s̶ Lawell’s pockets, later on.

Still there’s always Molde it’s a gazebo week, and ‘the supporters’ might get a chance to be be back on the internets to pan Ronny’s lack of knowledge, the boards greed, and Celtic’s overall cluelessness.

  3. I don’t make a song and a dance about tutu skirts being worn under duffel coats. In fact I don’t make a song and a dance about it that much that this is the first time I have ever mentioned it.

I don’t like it! There I’ve said it now. But would it stop me giving to charity if said charity volunteer approached me wearing a tutu skirt and a duffel coat. I think not!

I think I will repeat myseld ad-infintum until I bore you all to tears for weeks and months on end to the point that I take over the blog and cause tutu friction amongst you all and even upset BMCUWP!

MWD has the right to change his mind of a Saturday eveining with regards the wearing of tutu skirts and duffel coats in his own private surroundings.

Just reading a tweet by the zombies – they are organising Stink Bomb Saturday

Bears will simply walk into their local Sports Direct and let off a joke shop Stink bomb. They reckon that will have such a serious effect of sales that mikey will chuck his nonsense.

I’m sure sports directs competition must be kicking them selves that they didn’t think of this tactic before

They are asking the Newcastle fans to get on board with Stink bomb Saturday. … I think they might have got this idea from the Viz …

Its zero hrs contracts at SD so it won’t really cost much to get the bigger members of staff to stand at the door on zombie alert

I am not surprised that they have brainstormed this latest attack on mikey after the success of the previous successes of boycotting shirt sales that end up getting charged at full price to rifc and the walk into the shop and offer a pound for sets of golf clubs etc .

Alan Sugar will have no shortage of candidates for this year’s apprentice

  13. Too good not to share ….from Sons of Struth Craig I like him he is funny…

Sports Direct own the rights to our shirt sponsorship when the 32red deal expires and they paid nothing for it.

If you care to look back on our timeline I have been talking about this since before the EGM in March.

Dastardly Mike done a deal our club when he had his two place men on our board

Remember Somers statement about “normalising” the marketing deal when he returned the £1 for the stadium naming rights deal? Mr Somers forgot to tell us the normalisation really meant giving Ashley the rights to our shirts sponsor.

Magic Mike now has a decision to make. He can emblazon our shirt with Sports Direct or any other of his firms name or he could sell to the highest bidder and we would receive no money from our shirt sponsorship deal from next season

I have tried unsuccessfully to uncover the length of the deal but I would imagine it would have been similar to the stadium naming rights deal which from memory would have three years to go.

Our club now receives no money from shirt sponsorship, a pittance from merchandise and our board are gagged from explaining the full extent of his dastardly deals from fans and shareholders.

This wretched excuse of a man even attempted to curtail our own fund raising efforts while we raised a four figure sum for the Former Rangers Players Benevolent Fund.

I am confident to predict our soon to be released accounts will show very little difference from the 75p from each £10 spent on club merchandise that was revealed in last years accounts. Remember at the time the Ashley controlled board attempted to claim we were due a massive dividend and we would be better this season?

I said it yesterday and I will say it again, the borderline legal acts of Llambias, Leach and Ashley are strangling our club. If anyone wants to google “companies act section 41” they will see why I’m happy to use such terminology.

Our club has been used as a personal piggy bank for Whyte and Green in the past and is now being used as a corporate piggy bank by Sports Direct.

Our fan base gave too much to the previous two before we woke up, let’s not make the same mistake again.

Are we incapable of going a year or two without a replica shirt? Does it make you less of a fan spending your blue pounds on something else that gets more money in to our club? Buy a brick it lasts longer. Buy a few programmes. Buy someone less fortunate a ticket for a game.

It took us two years to get some fans round to accepting the last board were bad for our club, please let’s not take the same length to get through to you on this one.

I fully expect a legal and PR vendetta against me, I’ve got news for you Mike, I’m well used to it and it won’t deter me in bringing the fans together against you.

Ashley may have big pockets and thick skin but I will happily stand up against him because this is our club not a line on the accounts of Sports Direct.

I really wish we didn’t need to start another campaign, I really wish we could just switch off and enjoy the football. The reality is we need to and we have learned so much from previous years and campaigns that we are even better prepared than before.

We the fans have the only thing he wants and it’s in our pockets, give him it and nothing will change. Keep it from him and we have a chance.

Every bear needs to see this, share it on social media, show your friends and family that aren’t online, discuss it on the busses on the way to games and don’t just leave it to others. Together we will make a difference but it will take everyone doing something and not leaving it to a few.

Of course SOS will organise events and come up with ideas but it’s not only us that need to do something. Join us, help spread the word and support us as we start this next chapter.

Gone are the times of petty squabbles between fans, we are far better than that this time. Let’s just do what needs done together.

Remember we have beaten bullies before and we will again. How can I say this with confidence? It’s simple we are Rangers fans.

Here before them, here after them. Here forever.

  14. antipodean red on

    Bournesouprecipe,

It’s all very well beating SPFL fodder, all be it very well against Hearts late in the game and a superb performance against Aberdeen. But if we were to fail twice in a fortnight against those Norwegian giants of Molde, then Celtic supporters would be indeed be entirely justified in asking questions, particularly in light of the submission in Norway. Or do you expect that everyone should just be happy with that level of performance?

  15. With no covering Knights King is exposed, check mate is an inevitability.

If TBB is right then I think the play will turn to timing.

If Mike waits and the fan group reserves are deployed with King the pain goes on a bit longer but there’s no one to mop up at the end. If he brings King down now then he can strike a deal, have ‘the club’ fan owned and perpetually licensing the franchise, logos and all as they have a slush fund to get started.

The problem the fans groups have is the sodom and gomorrah one. 20 good men? How about 10? 5? 1?

Without the ‘whole business’ and tradeable shares I’m not sure there’s a person with the nous to run it out there.

  17. The Battered Bunnet on

    Good pont Kev.

If the fans pile their savings in behind King just now, it’ll buy a month or two of reprieve, but will serve only to ensure that they have no colatteral to use when the house comes down and the chance to take the ‘club’ back arrives.

As for the matter of a few god men, surely to god there is at least a handful of folk with the nouse to run a 21st century business?

  18. By the way, I am pretty unimpressed by the way people are discussing Molde on here as if they are Stajrnan or Inter CableTel Cardiff.

They beat Fenerbache in Turkey and were unlucky not to beat Ajax. They deserve respect as they have been head and shoulders above the rest of the group so far.

Still, we need 3 points or we’re done for.

  22. My friends in Celtic,

As many of us stated Nir Bitton signing on until 2020 is excellent news. Our custodians have persuaded him that his medium to long term future lies in Glasgow.

This does not necessarily mean he will be staying in a ” wee daddy league” it may mean that we can expect to play in an environment more befitting of our status.

Why do I think that this may be possible at this time ?

With the seemingly unstoppable rise in viewers watching games through Internet streams the big media companies must know that their subscriptions must fall and dramatically so. Then payouts must follow.

The bigger teams will then try to form individual deals and the most attractive clubs will be asked to participate in a new set up.

I posess no magic hat, but I think this is inevitable.
