MOTHERWELL spoiled Barry Ferguson’s homecoming to Ibrox with a 2-1 win in the Premiership this afternoon.
The latest setback opens the door for champions Celtic to ease 16 points ahead at the league summit when they face St Mirren in the 5.30pm kick-off in Paisley.
Two strikes from Luke Armstrong, in the ninth minute, and Tom Sparrow, on the half-hour mark, condemned the faltering Govan club to another failure.
Cyriel Dessers netted nine minutes after the interval, but there was to be no miraculous fightback on this occasion after Ferguson had seen his side win 4-2 against Kilmarnock at Rugby Park in midweek on his debut as interim manager after the sacking of Philippe Clement.
The loss to the Fir Park club completed an x-certificate hat-trick of consecutive defeats at Ibrox after losing 1-0 to Queen’s Park in the Scottish Cup and then St Mirren 2-0 a week ago.
That was the loss that saw Clement’s 16 months in charge come to an end.
Boos and jeers greeted the final whistle as furious home fans demonstrated their anger.
