Blackett, Christie and our biggest spend in 14 years

846

Tyler Blackett’s arrival, announced moments before halftime on Saturday, was welcome. He’ll immediately push Izzie, who has had no real competition for the left back berth since arriving at Celtic five years ago – an incredible situation.

The Ryan Christie situation surprised me. Ryan performed well against a Celtic defence in a state of flux earlier this month, as he has done previously against us, but it will certainly a curious signing (this morning Inverness Caledonian Thistle announced they have accepted a bid from Celtic).  More on these two later.

As for rumours that we’re about to spend more money on a player than we have since John Hartson arrived 14 years ago……. Well, that is a change of pace. On top of this business, I’m sure there will be more comings and goings in defence, and elsewhere.  Stay tuned……..

Thanks to everyone who entered the raffle for the Golf Day for four at Aberdour.  Taggsy informed the winner (Gerry) by email this morning.

  1. Thought Mrs Pastry was a reasonably funny send up of Mr. Pastry, I’m waiting for Wee Alfie Pastry to make his entrance but all that sh*te is for another day. All I am interested in today is having our Croatian Centre Half confirmed in, Derk confirmed out and a Striker in who can and will score a minimum of 30 goals a year.

  2. Think Manure just got stuffed big time by Real Madrid, suspect they decided to sign de Gea on a free come January. On a positive note for our own club we still have Craig Gordon on board , fingers crossed

  3. Durham’s comments are on the Mail Online, not Talk Sport. He is doing his usual of trashing our achievements. He spent sometime in Glasgow and has leanings towards Sevco. He cannot hold back his hatred of all things Celtic. He’s Simply a Hun…..

Paul Kimmage is a courageous investigative sports journalist.

His sporting background is in cycling and raced at the highest level.

It was due to what he witnessed with doping in his world that he retired from the sport and became a full time journalist.

Along with David Walsh, he did much to expose the cycling authorities in their cover up of Lance Armstrong’s drug fuelled career.

If only we had journalists like those two in Scotland.

Ha I had genuinely not seen that as I have been absent from the blog for weeks!

The Green situation this morning is interesting but it is merely a sideshow. A pretty big sideshow I will grant you but a sideshow nonetheless.

tedermeatballs twitter line from last night was interesting to say the least. He was warning that the Rangers thing was about to go nuclear and that we were nearing the mushroom cloud.

There is a strong suggestion that Green will be charged with offences relating to misleading statements in the share prospectus and so on.

All very good and that but still a side issue and nothing really to do with the original charges brought against Duff and Phelps, Craig Whyte etc

Unless of course someone has started asking questions about just how and under what circumstances Green managed to buy the assets from the liquidators, and where did the money come from?

But then that is still a sideshow because the charges against Whyte are all about raising money on company assets and using that money to buy company shares – but that is a sideshow because the value of the shares came to only £1.

More interesting is how a guy who has nothing, owns nothing, and looks like a gombeen can walk into Ticketus PLC ( for that read Octopus PLC ) and persuade them to give him £25M in return for a promise?

Could be he had a buisness plan and a set of figures drawn up by someone else? Could be that someone else warranted the figures and the previous trading figures of the business?

Could be that Ticketus made a balls up of the security package that they took over the company assets and it could be they have a huge claim against their lawyers? Could be that the lawyers belatedly corrected the mistake – maybe? Could be Ticketus and the lawyers insurers are all over the liquidators like a rash about what is in the pot and about the ale of the assets to Green?

Could be that Green will have to explain his relationship to Whyte and how his wee “Paki Pal” as he called him came to have a sum of money which was transferred by the MBB’s mammy?

Could be that Green will have to explain where all that money raised on the stock market went?

Could be that wee Craig baby is raging and is sticking everyone and anyone right in it?

But that is all a sideshow really?

Maybe we will find out who backed Green in the first place?

Maybe Mike Ashley gave him some money?

Maybe someone knows the answer to all of these questions?

Maybe the SFA should investigate certain matters?

But all of that is a sideshow really.

There are some people who are awfully quiet and never seen anymore don’t you think?

    Can anyone else hear singing?

No real surprises re the transfer front.

I do wonder though if Man Utd’s equivalent of PL is getting pelters on Man U quick news for the farcical transfer dealings with Real Madrid.

There’s some decent content on newsnow Celtic but there’s also some trash like Durham. If you click on the publication you can delete that particular publication from the list.

Which I have just done with the Daily Mail, having already done so with the Record, HITC and any other blatently anti- Celtic publication which appears.

    Beatbhoy,

Like you said, an interesting article. I am an enthusiastic fan of Athletics but not of the BBC team.Their focus is too much on UK athletes and a select bunch of foreigners. That is understandable (and perhaps even acceptable considering the audience) but the `sameness` of the pundits` ethos makes for dull commentary. An honest, alternative view to drugs in sport would be refreshing and to have an athlete actually saying: I do not run for Britain. I run for myself. would be interesting!

Anyway, enough of that from me on a Celtic site. Wouldn`t it be great if Virgil remains, Jozo turns out to be brilliant and Blackett and Izzy between them remove any concern about the LB spot?

Oh, one final comment before I give the bike a try (rain looks likely).

There seems to be an air on here that the EL is hardly worthy of us. Can I just remind people of the fact that there are two teams in our Group who are much, much more fancied to progress to the KO stage than we are?

    Cheerio for now,

  9. I’d like to wish VVD all the very best if as it looks like he is for the off, he was a joy to watch a colossus among men, in my opinion he has been one of the best centre halves I have ever seen in a Celtic Jersey, a fabulous athlete and seemed a downright nice guy, all the best big man.

  10. Deadline day without Harry Redknapp is weird, cancelled sky sports yesterday after some deliberation. Should have done it years ago. Guy on the phone asked me what team I supported, reminded me of my first job interview 32 years ago when guy asked ” What school did you attend son?”

If the deal doesn’t go through (Madrid usually find a way of getting round rules), this won’t upset Man U too much.

The guy was always going to leave on a free next season anyway, if, he now comes back into the team and plays to his ability then the points he wins them will be worth more than the £20mill transfer fee (it will be once again tight for Man U to finish 4th, but it’s all about the CL).

  12. WANYAMA LATEST

Sky sources understand that any possibility of Southampton midfielder Victor Wanyama joining Tottenham has now gone.

We believe the player left the UK this morning to join up with the Kenyan national team.

Re de Gea, I think Madrid just made sure he never ended up anywhere else . Defo pulled a fast one. Manc’s will be happy enough I suppose but a wee riddy on their coupon. Noo if it was us involved we’d be getting slaughtered

  15. For all the comment about Malmo, can I remind people that West Ham couldn’t beat a Maltese team, Southampton were duffed by a Danish side, and they have more money to spend than Celtic can shake a stick at.

  16. So, smokescreen geezers….who’s gonnae pay back the £140 million that was stolen and, concede that ‘all’ the trophies wrapped in red/white/blue ribbons since the start of the SDM era, were also stolen?

    Green?

    Whyte?

If, none of the above then, what’s the point in all of this hun pish?

Celtic’s billionaires on the board should have thrown a legal team at the prospect of Rangers kicking another ball until ‘all’ of the stolen money was paid back – They didn’t?

Celti’sc billionaires on the board should have thrown a legal team to challenge the pathetic LNS verdict – they didn’t?

    WTF?

  17. No issues with VVD moving on,that’s where we are as a club at the moment, good luck to him,i think he has a lot more improvement in him.To be honest,we need to move guys like him on,to attract other players in.

  18. “Celtic’s billionaires on the board should have thrown a legal team at the prospect of Rangers kicking another ball until ‘all’ of the stolen money was paid back – They didn’t?”

Celtic had no legal right to act on behalf of Rangers’ creditors. That club died and that was the end of it.

On the other hand, they could have challenged the licence being awarded to a new club playing out of Govan. It’s unclear what they did in that regard and I would refer to the likes of Auldheid on the matter.

To be honest, if Celtic managed to block Sevco’s SFA membership it would have been a good thing for RA PEEPUL. The SFA/SPL desperation for a “strong Rangers” allowed Mr Green to buy the clubs assets and bleed the peepul dry for years.

The club has been living hand to mouth since early 2014 as the “onerous contracts” handed out to like likes of Super Ally, Big Mike and many others still take a toll.

  19. Now that Virgil has gone that’s our plan B out of the window. I hope Simunovic can play upfront in the last five minutes.

  20. In the right team….Michael O’Halloran would be like a young Gary Hooper…imho.

The only foreign striker that I would sign…to develop…Jordan Larsson.

RD should rip a few pages from Slaven Bilic’s book about…parking a bus without the handbrake on….or, he could study MO’N’s Beachball Sunday script…for all EL games…not just away from home.

Celtic FC’s biggest star(s) of the present…The Green Brigade.

    Take care Celts…..oot. YNWA.

“Twenty-nine of the 30 SFL clubs accepted Rangers as an associate member of the Scottish Football League while 25 clubs voted in favour of placing the newco team into the bottom tier

Rangers will start the new season in the Irn-Bru Third Division following a vote by Scottish Football League chairmen at Hampden today.

The 30 SFL teams were voting on whether Charles Green’s newco Rangers should enter the league and which division they should be placed in.

The Scottish Premier League and Scottish Football Association were hopeful Rangers would be parachuted into the First Division, with SFA chief executive Stewart Regan claiming that putting the Ibrox club into the Third Division would bring financial catastrophe and a “slow, lingering death” of the game.

Twenty-nine of the 30 SFL clubs accepted Rangers as an associate member of the Scottish Football League while 25 clubs voted in favour of placing the newco team into the bottom tier.

SFL chief executive David Longmuir said: “The member clubs of the Scottish Football League have today voted to willingly accept The Rangers Football Club as an associate member of the Scottish Football League.

“Furthermore, the Scottish Football League’s only acceptable position will be to place Rangers FC into the Third Division of the Irn-Bru Scottish Football League from the start of this season.”

Good luck Virgil, we will miss you. Another Celt joining a lesser club for a greater wage.

Shame he couldn’t have departed on a higher note. The Virgil who was so easily blocked at 3 of the Malmo goals was a shadow of the Virgil who we were used to seeing glide around the field, lesser players bouncing off him like ninepins. With all the transfer speculation, I reckon we lost some of Virgil before Malmo.

  27. Michael O’halloran is too old to be a young Gary Hooper.

He’d pass as a younger brother though.
