Blackett, Christie and our biggest spend in 14 years

846

Tyler Blackett’s arrival, announced moments before halftime on Saturday, was welcome. He’ll immediately push Izzie, who has had no real competition for the left back berth since arriving at Celtic five years ago – an incredible situation.

The Ryan Christie situation surprised me. Ryan performed well against a Celtic defence in a state of flux earlier this month, as he has done previously against us, but it will certainly a curious signing (this morning Inverness Caledonian Thistle announced they have accepted a bid from Celtic).  More on these two later.

As for rumours that we’re about to spend more money on a player than we have since John Hartson arrived 14 years ago……. Well, that is a change of pace. On top of this business, I’m sure there will be more comings and goings in defence, and elsewhere.  Stay tuned……..

Thanks to everyone who entered the raffle for the Golf Day for four at Aberdour.  Taggsy informed the winner (Gerry) by email this morning.

  1. Apart from a post here, I cannot find any news anywhere re Stevie Frail. Virgil is the biggest story on SSN deadline day pantomime, had his medical last night according to them. No talk yet about Scotland.

  2. All the best to VVD – thanks for your effort and the £9m profit you left behind.

Personally believe Denayer was as important if not more important to Celtic last season – he would have been my pick of the two and I suspect will go on to have the better career.

I’m concerned the Denayer situation repeats itself with Blackett. We will grow a dependency on him then he will depart leaving a hole just before our next attempt at Champion’s League qualification. The opportunity cost is massive – we fail to grow and develop a longer term Centre Back solution.

Good point about VVD and distractions, there is potentially a great player there

Needs a seasoned pro to guide him on dealing with the sharper forwards

  4. Hopefully manage to clear out a some fringe players today.

Sad that our best player, yet again, departs. If Simunovic does come in for £4m+ then I really hope (and believe) he’s been well scouted and will be of similar calibre. Can’t say I know anything about him and haven’t even come across an often misleading YouTube video, but unlike the striker position we do seem to recruit fairly well at the back just now.

Christie is a promising player but what are we going to do with all these attacking midfielders? They all have potenital but do they have potential to be Champions League class?

That’s got to be the aim here.

We NEED a quality striker. Griffiths and a yet to fire Ciftci are not enough, Stokes looks like he’s out the picture and to be brutally honest, they can all do their job in a particular role but not one of them is a complete striker.

  5. We need a decent striker to bring Griffiths on. I have ( and always have had) enormous belief in Leigh Griffiths ability and natural talent. I said when we signed him he was the perfect Celtic signing as I don’t feel he will necessarily attract attention from a bigger club – he’s not got the physique/profile but he does have the talent to become a very good Celtic forward. He needs a more accomplished partner to take him up a level.

Cifcti will not do that job and has already been ‘seen off’ by Griffiths – who is miles better. I don’t buy the different type of player baloni – strikers have one job – Griffiths does that job well.

  6. The VVD leaving saga has been going on for so long, and the confusion was so certain, it’s not registering with me as a player going!

An English mate from work just phoned and said “see your selling a centre back for £11m” .

I had to think who it was! In my mind he left about 10 to 10 last Tuesday night.

Great player, he will be missed.

The best centre half in my time watching the hoops was Elliot, in IMHO. In the brief spell he was here, he was colossal. . A giant in a poor team.

The bear was great as well for a time, for different reasons.

Eight signings by us, before the window slams shut.

Pretty substantial turnaround in personnel under Ronny, leaving just a hand full of players from the Neil Lennon era, and a few that won’t get a game still heading for the revolving door, before midnight

If we get another striker I’ll be surprised, if we don’t I’m confident Nadir Ciftci, who will score plenty, when he’s free from suspension for the SPL, and has the actual Celtic support behind him on match days.

I also hope Anthony Stokes doesn’t move on, and gets his head down as he’s scored a fair few goals against all SPL opposition

Good luck to VVD great player graced the Hoops, well done to us, for getting a reasonable fee.

  9. Dexter says PAY THE LIVING WAGE CELTIC PLC on

I think Ciftci should be sent out on loan. He is still a work in progress, it seems. I don’t believe we should be used as a job training scheme, however.

  10. Marc rieper or bobo. Best centre halfs I have seen

8 players in how many are 1st eleven players?

Lost Center half pairings with one replacement

    And…………… Guess what no striker

Are we stronger from last Season

6m in the pl bonus pot :(

  11. Looks like Virgil to Southampton for £11.5 million.

After watching him defend the three Malmo corner goals, I’m definitely in the ‘Any more than £5 million bite their hand off’ corner. Might’ve been me that said it in the first place….

Virgil suffers from the luxurious handicap of being a defender with anticipation so good it gives him time to think. In certain situations, thinking ain’t the best thing for a big centre back. As in Barcelona in the 1-6 he gets found wanting by sharp-witted forwards as he struggles to make a final decision. He can be forgiven the Barca shambles because we were already out and Lenny changed the team drastically to provide gametime for the squad.

But versus Malmo… Old failings writ large when the chips were down. Couldn’t just focus on winning the ball clear; too busy in the head with the shenanigans in the box. He should have made all three crosses his alone and skittled anyone around him. Three times. Three fails. No CL.

Been good to watch and looked special on many an occassion, but not quite the top-class backline general we needed. He’ll get a few roastings down south with the speed of foot and thought up against him.

As for Simunovic – is this the ubiquitous bench-warmer from the Balkan region to replace Scepovic on the bench/director’s box? We’ll see – in such case, also expect some overhyped, over-inflated ego to arrive on loan at the last minute, become the manager’s latest blind-spot and take up the jersey from fully-contracted players until he decides we can’t pay him enough nine months down the line…

As for Aidrian Durham – that’s one creepy Hun fanny; gurning DJ man-child who wears trousers far too tight for him and hangs around teenagers like Noel Edmonds leering over a particularly tense deal-or-no-deal box-opening situation…

  12. Durham studied in Glasgow during the Souness years when half the England team played for thems. He went there for his football fix, hence the reason he is now a vitriolic Celtic hater

Needed knocked out when he ran an online poll, at the height of NFLs suffering at the hands of the hun bigots,”Does Neil Lennon deserve to be hated” on his drivetime show with his sidekick and fellow clown Darren Gough

  13. Syd

    Balde was a proper Centre Back , ( and a CEO )

Sadly in some eyes he was also Bobo ( he’s a bombscare ) Balde long before Efe (he’s a bombscare) Ambrose, and before Daniel (he’s a bombscare ) Majstorovic and before…………………………etc

  14. Bsr,

Agreed. But I think Stokes will be away if he can find a club and replacement found.

  15. I heard he was dead on

The only time I would listen to Talksport is when England have lost at football and the morons phoning in and those presenting sit greetin about how comes the best league in the world doesn’t help England win.

Other than that, they can all do one.

  16. Talk sport doing feature on players clubs would get rid of.

    Notable comments from fans….

“Wonder if anyone will be stupid enough to take Michu”

“Aiden McGeady. The guy us stealing a wage”

Nowt so fickle as fans eh!

  17. Van Dijk, is possibly one of the most elegant centre halfs we’ve had this last 30 years.

Ability with the ball at his feet is second to none.

However to say he is best defender we have had, over this period, is wide of the mark I.m.h.o.

For hard as nails, sheer ruggedness :

Mick McCarthy, Johan Mjallby, Tony Mowbray, bobo balde.

All of which lacked any real pace, but made up for it by being solid.

However if your are talking about the most complete, all round centre half, then I’d go with :

    Paul Elliot.

Although Marc Reiper too was a tower of strength, consistent and could read the game well. Paul Elliot has the edge on Reiper, only because Elliot was very quick.

Virgil VanDijk reminds me of a young Ramon Vega.

  18. Joe Filippis Haircut on

Looks like Fletcher is a no goer if we dont get a striker before the dead line I would hope Stokes is still with us I would make the pecking order Griffithis Stokes and then Cifti. I think if Ronny and Stokes can bury there differences Stokes playing as striker for me would make a lot of sense as I think it is his best position and he would score as many goals as some of the other names mentioned. H.H.

The Colin Murray show is very good,

Hawksbey and Jacobs show at 1pm is quite simply brilliant.

    Your missing a trick

  20. I do Bobo a disservice above, because the big man was quick.

Balde had it all, apart from those moments when he believed he was beckenbaur .

If he understood his footballing limitations better, we would of had the ultimate centre half.

  21. Geordie

Yep, and on yet Friday the negatrolls said we’d get £6m for VVD and a loan signing was his replacement. Do they just lurk when Celtic invest more money, or are they busy getting their toys back in the pram?

No doubt some will be preparing for the closure of the window with their ‘best long post ever’ on how it’s really Celtic that are ‘deid’.

It’s all quiet on the Stokesy front but if he goes, someone will come in, as we require more than 2 strikers, when we have around 13 midfielders, and 9 defenders ;-)

  22. glendalystonsils on

Surprised nobody has mentioned the best CB and leader of the lot. Billy McNeill. Maybe yer all too young >))

  23. As far as centre backs go, I loved Paul Elliot but the best defender by a country milefar was the bold Ramon Vega.

I can honestly say that he won over 98% of high balls into the box and, if he hadn’t had his head turned by his manager-brother, he would have been a legend in the Hoops!

He later stated that the worst mistake of his professional career was leaving Celtic.

    ——————————————

Desperate to go ‘aff oot’ but glued to the internet to see who our new striker is going to be!
