Blackett, Christie and our biggest spend in 14 years

846

Tyler Blackett’s arrival, announced moments before halftime on Saturday, was welcome. He’ll immediately push Izzie, who has had no real competition for the left back berth since arriving at Celtic five years ago – an incredible situation.

The Ryan Christie situation surprised me. Ryan performed well against a Celtic defence in a state of flux earlier this month, as he has done previously against us, but it will certainly a curious signing (this morning Inverness Caledonian Thistle announced they have accepted a bid from Celtic).  More on these two later.

As for rumours that we’re about to spend more money on a player than we have since John Hartson arrived 14 years ago……. Well, that is a change of pace. On top of this business, I’m sure there will be more comings and goings in defence, and elsewhere.  Stay tuned……..

Thanks to everyone who entered the raffle for the Golf Day for four at Aberdour.  Taggsy informed the winner (Gerry) by email this morning.

You’ve known me long enough to expect no less, bud!

  2. If we’re not in the CL we can’t afford to break even on transfers. That’s the bottom line (boom boom).

  3. Big Pedro shuffles the deck while spinning at the same time…..Magician eh.

    Turkebhoy

Ive already explained why its not the “biggest spend in 14 yrs”

We got back…more than we put out….simple economics.

    HH

  4. We didn’t make the Champions League.

We lost out on circa £20 million.

Why the hell would anyone want to see us go further into debt by spending big?

VVD sale will cover losses and enable purchases. As did Forster’s last year.

You lose out on promotion/new job/ big bonus you go out and buy a Ferrari?

Course not – you sell your wife and lease a Mercedes.

*one of those last points might be extreme examples.

    I meant lease a Mondeo.

  5. SANDMAN

Nobody wants to sell Celtic in debt.

But….as I said, VVD 10/11 million, plus Derk, Stokes, and Scepovic……11 Million plus in to the club, as opposed to say 5 Million for JS and RC.

I make that, Celtic 6 Million up.

So where all this spin about the biggest spend in 14 years comes in….I don’t understand.

    Maybe I’m just daft.

    HH

  6. Sandman-We knew VVD was going after the CLQs,for 10 mil plus.Spend some of that to give us the best possible chance of qualifying, did we do that? Maybe part of the GB banner was accurate.HH

  7. Imagine if this happened. Celtic sign Jozo then ..

‘Hi Peter, Virgil here. Never agreed personal terms so just going to stay for another season’

Maybe oul’ Pistol Pete has realised that the natives are restless?

That’s three years in a row he has undermined the manager by faffing about when we needed players to get us into the big time. He should have learned his lesson by the squeaky-bum time two seasons ago.

Naw,he saw parsimony as the way forward, rather than a lucky roll of the dice.

And on the subject of gambling,he’s a busted flush.

Who do they think they are, purchasing tickets, singing, cheering, making banners creating an atmosphere inside Celtic Park.

They should be banned or made to stand outside in the car park, and use the internet to bump their gums like the rest of us.

I’m getting punted into the App Store and some betting website when I hit on any page on CQN. I’ve deleted my history and changed a few settings but not really helped. Anyone know how to change?

Ryan Christie seems like a good player and is pretty inexpensive. So far Celtic have allowed McAthur, McArthy, Robertson, Gauld, Fletcher and Dorrans, Snodgrass to go unchallenged. We intervene then we sell on after exposure. We are hardly likely to lose out and sell at a loss. Eg GMS is now worth what 2m? Armstrong 3m?

There may be better more technical players available cheaper but will they settle? How much will we lose?

Some cmments on this blog regarding young Scottish players are out of order especially in light If the fawning over a certain older player.

  12. Simunovic, Michu . When are we going to sign someone the fans can pronounce or spell , ffs some can’t even get Scott Allan right:-)

  13. Ah…I see…its accounting PLC style…I get it now.

    Ok VVD,10/11 Million IN

And say 5 Million for JS and RC OUT

So that equates to our “Biggest Spend in 14 years”

    OK….Righhhhht…I get it now.

  15. Joe Filippis Haircut on

I would not like to see Joe Hanson being sold I like his work rate his aggression and He appears not fear anyone. I feel the player can still improve he gets into good goal scoring situations but he could score more often All this stuff about a bust up in training it happens all the time you have highly paid young guys with big egos so it is bound to be volatile now and again. H.H.

  16. “Now as for Kris Commons ,Ronnie has ruined our 30 goal a season man.”

    Tiny Tim,

    Hysterical nonsense

  17. the gullible really don’t get it…

we don’t get to the champions league because we don’t buy players to fill the sizeable holes’ in our first team squad to get us there…

then we sell our bests players and spend only half what we get in because of the downward spiralling money trap because there’s a gaping hole in our finances because we don’t get champions league football.

    its call ‘reverse moneyball’

    use adblock plus

SOT if you are about did you see my ask for your thoughts yesterday ?

  19. I see the gamble as thus:

Signing players pre-CL qualifying MAY increase the qualification chances. No guarantees. Lower quality of player available. Unless you’re willing to spend like fenerbache and STILL not make it. And yes, I am aware they had a tougher qualifying route but had we spent l ike they did on that quality and failed like they did this place would be black type on a black background and the ads would be for Dignitas.

Signing players after qualifying means better quality of player willing to come to club. The gamble is to qualify with what you’ve got and then make it even better. We’ve failed narrowly two years now to crack that golden formula so will be interested to see if we give it a third go. However if you do make it that way the cycle it kicks off can be stellar.

These prospective signings will be RDs last shot at getting it right next summer. He’ll have the added distraction of the media Zombie frenzy as they get promotion.

As for the GB banner – bit of a brass neck from the bhoys who started the ‘Champions League Party’ huddle at 3-1 v Malmo but if they’re committed to backing players who got a sledging from Malmo after the first leg then go over there and hide like firghtened first years playing the big boys in the academy playground for the first time then the GB have a right to ram it to the players and question their appetite for the fight in their own particular way. Their criticism of the board is justified because the board PR let them down badly early in the year after the Motherwell non-event and the Dundee ‘riots’. The standing area should be the preserve of the GB only. Otherwise, CP will have tumble weeds blowing down the pitch.

  20. Think Stefan getting hard time but suppose the paradise regulars have seen much more of him than me.

Surprised some of the squad has reportedly turned against him ..after all it was them who voted for him last year.

Fletcher Defo not for me but if ronnie did pair him with Griffiths I think they would make good partnership.. If fletcher stayed fit.

  21. Feeling excited about the new signings , hope the CH has no teeth and a hairy a@se , big Virgil was always too pretty for me.

  22. bournesouprecipe-I hope you and yours are well, the lack of ambition and forward thinking ,has found us out again IMO.Now we get a flurry of activity? RD had long enough to size up the squad,to get players in and out before pre-season.As i said, did we give ourselves the best possible chance of qualifying? HH

  23. I should add the caveat that I think if we fail miserably in the Europa group then this will be RD’s last transfer window and we’ll have a new boss in by January.

  24. Captain Beefheart on

Some of the guff on here is Comical Ali esque.

We were dumped by a bunch of Swedish non entities.

Now we should be grateful for spending a little of what will be the Virgil money.

Incidentally, a great fee for Virgil if we get 11 million.

  25. August 2014-we need a LB to give Izzy competition,and a striker

    August 2015-we need a LB to give Izzy competition,and a striker…….

  26. Paul67 seriously … I love the blog ( mostly) but sometimes it feels like a mouthpiece for poorly orchestrated propaganda….are you seriously expecting folk to swallow the proclaimed ‘good news’ header??

Anyhow- what an easy job Lawwell has himself… Can anyone think of any circumstance that would precipitate his sacking?

He can mess up and he knows he’s ok. He punts more family silver to get us out of a temporary shortfall.

He stumbles on a good idea – he buys Armstrong and GMS – good work I say , superb business. He then thinks this idea is in actual fact a strategy do he proceeds to buy any Scottish player with a glimmer of talent regardless of where they play or can fit in to a team.

The only measure for his continued bonus payments must be attendance..let’s see how that works out over the next season..

  27. We kept the player who was to help get us to the CL, he wants to leave now, and you’d be daft to keep him

even though he was such a………….ahem……………… stand out in Europe.

    Shhhhhhh csc

p.s. If he changes his mind it’ll be PL’s fault as well.
