Blackett, Christie and our biggest spend in 14 years

846

Tyler Blackett’s arrival, announced moments before halftime on Saturday, was welcome. He’ll immediately push Izzie, who has had no real competition for the left back berth since arriving at Celtic five years ago – an incredible situation.

The Ryan Christie situation surprised me. Ryan performed well against a Celtic defence in a state of flux earlier this month, as he has done previously against us, but it will certainly a curious signing (this morning Inverness Caledonian Thistle announced they have accepted a bid from Celtic).  More on these two later.

As for rumours that we’re about to spend more money on a player than we have since John Hartson arrived 14 years ago……. Well, that is a change of pace. On top of this business, I’m sure there will be more comings and goings in defence, and elsewhere.  Stay tuned……..

Thanks to everyone who entered the raffle for the Golf Day for four at Aberdour.  Taggsy informed the winner (Gerry) by email this morning.

Fenerbache had to defeat Shaktar. No argument against investment.

Shaktar invest each year and grow. They sell and acquire. They will grow. We will stagnate.

We had to defeat Maribor or Malmo. We couldn’t.

Never mind, Southampton are out and Quarabag are through. We are therefore fandabbydozie. Sadamn lives.

“Surprised some of the squad has reportedly turned against him ..after all it was them who voted for him last year.”

No, our players are not allowed to vote for anyone in our team, it was players from all the other teams that voted for him.

I disagree, and yes we did give ourselves the best chance of qualifying. We retained VVD for the qualifiers unfortunately, the RD system and particularly the players in Malmo were set out for another year in the EL, even then only by the slimmest of margins. We scored three times at CP but the system cracked and might even have done with VVD and Jason Denayer partnered.

We are not fully prepared for the CL regardless of which players we brought in

after GMD and SA. The proof of that will be how we perform in the EL. We’d need to revert to a side principally set out how not to be beaten, rather than RD’s up and at em, which will be chopped down ad nauseum, by European sides.

The inevitable sale of Virgil van dijk was rubber stamped some time ago, and it was clear this season that the previous mouthy public stance of VVD and his agent had been completely silenced, because an agreement had been reached that should Celtic fail to enter the CL proper the ‘ambitious’ player would be allowed away.

With a hint of irony, Virgil opted out to a club he’ll maybe help into the the Europa League next season, or could be in the bottom half of the big league at St Mary’s.? However he has the EPL dreams so many crave, and only time will tell how good a centre back , he really is., when he’s not playing against ‘the dross’ that is Scottish Football, and is denigrated nearly every day on CQN.

The fee mentioned is enough it seems to have Celtic’s many enemies, feeling quite poorly, so that will do nicely for me.

VVD gave his all, and he’ll remain a great footballing CB to have played at Celtic., what he certainly wasn’t by any manner of means was the best defender, not in the same class as so many, to have gone before especially in the air, not as aware of danger as Johan Mjallby, definately no Caesar, and like most a pussy cat, in the Bobo Balde terms.

If you minus the EPL insanity factor for EPL experience, Celtic have done nicely from the price paid, especially if you were to montage Virgil’s European games, and specific incidents. One in Milan and most recently, Malmo would a ‘class A’ defender, have absented himself from all three corners that eliminated us from CL participation?.

The unhealthily obsessed that churn of the daily anti Celtic drivel on this site are to be pitied (again), as Celtic look set to complete our umpteenth ( lost count) signing since the Maribor defeat last year. What these people do when Celtic win, or sign another player is anybody’ guess?

What would they give to be just another Celtic supporter happy at going along to watch Celtic.

Ah but if you previously only gave away 4 beans, this is still your biggest spend to date.

Of course your net spend may be lower. Doesn’t make the first claim incorrect.

  10. 13m + add-ons for VVD (= a good deal)

then another 3m on top when Big Vic goes to Spurs from Southampton.

get some more dough in for scepovic, stokes and commons and we are loaded.

let me see the balance sheet.

  11. If Joe Hansen goes wouldn’t be too bothered been a decent player – very good on his day – but too often wasteful in possession and spurs too many opportunities

I accept that posters come on to CQN for a variety of reasons. I come on to see if there is any information on matters Celtic ( and on Sevco, I must admit) that I cannot trust the MSSM to report. So, in general, I am not really interested in the uninformed opinions proffered by seemingly brilliant managers and financiers . Occasionally, though, one of the predictable posters has a moment of illumination, an epiphany. . Such was the case with The Green man earlier when he said:

    “Maybe I’m just daft.”

Imagining such a scenario suggest PL will not be moving VVD fingers, holding pen full of indellible ink and scribing on parchment of said purchasers before he jets (is jet the right word or is that just for huns and their undead brethern?) off to an exotic land such as Dundee or inverness or even Salt n Sauce to purchase his new starlets (oops another undead noun) just before the tranny’s windie breaks.

This is merely a comment an not a dig at you but people are deluded if they ever think we’re going to spend our income from transfers in it’s entirety. It flies totally in the face of buy them young and cheap, develop then sell.

Now where we might see increases is the initial outlay. VvD was £2.5m or thereabouts, JS is supposedly £3.5m. If we recoup the same transfer in 2 years that’s decent. If we make the same gains we’d be pulling in near £18m and that would allow another step-up in outlay. Perhaps we might even take the risk on a striker.

  21. we concede easy goals and we don’t score enough on the big stage..solution= buy another midfielder…eh?

No Bother…I get what you are saying.

At no point have I ever advocated spending all our income from transfers.

We don’t have that luxury, I agree.

However…the PLC project strategy has failed badly.

For every VVD we unearth…there are downsides which outweigh the advantages.

For example…Derk, Balde, Pukki, Berget, Ciftci,…just to name a few from a large catalogue of substandard players.

We can do a whole lot better imo

    The strategy needs tweaked.

    We need ne ideas.
