Blackett, Christie and our biggest spend in 14 years

846

Tyler Blackett’s arrival, announced moments before halftime on Saturday, was welcome. He’ll immediately push Izzie, who has had no real competition for the left back berth since arriving at Celtic five years ago – an incredible situation.

The Ryan Christie situation surprised me. Ryan performed well against a Celtic defence in a state of flux earlier this month, as he has done previously against us, but it will certainly a curious signing (this morning Inverness Caledonian Thistle announced they have accepted a bid from Celtic).  More on these two later.

As for rumours that we’re about to spend more money on a player than we have since John Hartson arrived 14 years ago……. Well, that is a change of pace. On top of this business, I’m sure there will be more comings and goings in defence, and elsewhere.  Stay tuned……..

Thanks to everyone who entered the raffle for the Golf Day for four at Aberdour.  Taggsy informed the winner (Gerry) by email this morning.

  1. English Football is a Monster.

Caught some of the Liverpool-West Ham Game.

I believe Liverpool payed 32 Million for Benteke…and £30 Million for Firminho.

    And they got pumped.

    Totally crazy.

Its not free flowing football….its the football of fear.

THE GREEN MAN on 31ST AUGUST 2015 2:11 PM

    I received 11 green beans….then I gave 5 green beans away

I still have 6 beans left.

Do NOT give the remaining beans away.

Instead……plant them in yer garden. In the morning a wonderful beanstalk will have grown, reaching up into the clouds. Next, you must climb up that beanstalk where you will find a pot of gold. BEWARE, though! There is a mean old giant named Peter, guarding his pot of gold. The trick is to get it from him ,( a feat noone has ever managed before) bring it back down to earth, where the gold will enable you to buy a team of players guaranteed to win the Champions League.

So are we signing a striker or what ? The prospect of a goalscoring hero would rekindle some of the lost fervour in the stands.

  6. I haven’t read any of the comments. I can imagine what they are like.

Welcome to Celtic Tyler….. and a huge welcome to young Ryan Christie. I am delighted we have signed him. I agree with John Hughes… a star in the making.

All the best VVD… unless you get another move, I think you’ve played your last game in Europe. I hope it all works out for you. Thanks for those free kicks especially.

I hope the rumours about ‘scarlet’ are unfounded. Short memories anyone who forgets how good he was for us last season.

Finally. .. I hope the crowds do dwindle down to 20000….. because it will be 20000 there who go for the love of seeing Glasgow Celtic.

  9. When Dave the King spends his £30,000,000 next season to re-establish his 3 year old boynes as the same new different entity in the SPFL who will we sell for between 10 and 15 million to compete?

I believe VVD is our last major asset.

Who comes close as teh next 10 to 15 mill asset or will it take 2 maybe 3 assests next year to accomodate competing with the felsh dying zombified new same different never changed club playing in a stadium called Hunpox?

My experience of the games when 10-20000 turn up is that the moaning gits are still there and make up a bigger percentage of the support.

What makes this deal mind boggling is why didn’t you wait till after the two Malmo games? 18. Christie is an interesting signing. Easily scouted, so should have been thoroughly assessed. I think I’d rather have £600k thrown at this guy than another of those £2m projects that have been so ‘successful’ in recent years, ahem. Nice also to see that petrol money for scouts now goes beyond Edinburgh and Dundee….. I hope Ryan Christie makes it at Celtic Park. His dad was one that got away….

    Good Afternoon.

Transfer deadline day always brings about a degree of insanity with criticism of some being quickly followed by praise for others added to complaints about this that and the next, followed by regret that we didn’t do this or that in the yesteryear.

Balance sheets, bonuses, last minute deals, 3rd choice strikers and all that come into the mix.

I hope whoever Celtic sign is of the best quality and that they really improve the team for it will need radical improvement if anyone seriously wants to progress in the Europa League.

However, in amongst all the opinion (qualified, semi qualified and completely unqualified) I note a couple of comments today which are most intriguing and worth considering before opining on anything transfer related.

First, consider this article which amongst other things highlights that former European trophy winning sides from the Bundesliga, who have huge attendances and so on, can no longer compete in the transfer market with the Stokes, West Brom’s and the Crystal Palaces of the EPL.

The EPL clubs will get ever richer with the effect that the top clubs like Man Utd, Chelsea, Arsenal, Man City and so on will find it increasingly difficult to buy from those who sit below them in the league ( see Everton’s refusal to sell Stone as an example ) and so they will have to shop elsewhere in the future thus driving prices across Europe in an upwards direction for top players whilst many famous and well supported clubs outwith the EPL ( like us ) will be forced to shop in a cheaper market.

    http://www.independent.co.uk/sport/football/transfers/saido-berahino-and-john-stones-nondeals-highlights-a-shift-in-premier-league-power-as-spurs-and-chelsea-fail-to-get-their-way-10478337.html?origin=internalSearch

    Second.

The trend in transfer activity during a transfer window increasingly moves towards clubs doing most of their business at the last moment.

This is not a bout of activity which is peculiar to Celtic but is increasingly commonplace across the transfer market.

One agent has pointed out today that more and more players and their advisers will simply not agree a move until they see just what teams are going to play in what competitions as this affects the clubs spending power, the players wage demands and media rights, and the chances of increased value for both player and the clubs selling or buying.

Buying or selling too early could mean underselling your wares and so it tends to be only the big clubs who know exactly where they are going to be, or the clubs who have no prospect of European football who do any business early.

Accordingly domestic transfers within Scotland can be done any old time but cross border or European activity always seems to be a mad last minute rush because that is just the way it is.

In many respects it is like the English house buying system where there is often a linked chain of events with a player having to move from C to D before another can move from B to C and another from A to B and so on.

The whole transfer window system and the structure of European competition makes all of this inevitable.

Were it the case that the champions of the top twenty seeded countries automatically qualified for the Champions League Group stages and that the 2nd and 3rd teams of the bigger leagues had to earn their way in via the play offs then Celtic would benefit financially and in terms of being able to plan their cross border transfers in advance.

Similarly, if domestic cups are to mean anything then similarly the winner of the cup competitions in those same leagues ( or the losing finalists if the winners are also league champions ) should gain automatic entry into the Europa league stages.

That way, football competition across Europe becomes relevant and meaningful irrespective of the size of checkbook being weilded by the TV execs.

However, in the absence of fundamental reform, the last minute activity, the amount and nature of the spend, and the ultimate quality of the football on offer at any local level is about to be determined not by any sense of fair play, financial rules or the ability of those who run or manage any club, by the value of the media contract which prevails in your country of residence.

Unless UEFA take steps to bring about change in the actual rules of football, then European Competitions will largely be determined by post code lottery.

And we the fans do nothing whatsoever about it except moan on the pages of the internet or in the surreal atmosphere of a public house.

To combat this, those who run clubs need to view the role of the football club completely differently, and those football associations who will never enjoy massive and game changing media rights need to find not only a voice, some teeth and a set of balls in dealing with UEFA but also a galvanising communal entrepreneurial flair which historically has been completely non existent in Scotland.

Whether this will be Celtic’s biggest spend in a transfer window or not is almost an irrelevance in the greater scheme of things as by the time we get to the qualifiers for the European competitions next year someone, somewhere will have signed an agreement which means that teams from another league may well be better equipped and better prepared that any Celtic team.

None of the above excuses the fact that Celtic are not in the Champions League draw for this year. That failure lies squarely at the feet of the Celtic players and their manager. Any team that can score three goals in the home leg of the final play off game is equipped to progress. A team which cannot defend and which ships four goals (home or away) in the final play off games is destined to fail unless they score 5 — and very very few score 5 in Europe at any stage or level.

I would rather sign Norman Stanley Fletcher, Cyril Flethcer, or the late Tommy Fletcher ( you will only get that reference if you are from Letterkenny) than Stephen Fletcher!

Football as an industry, and not just Celtic, needs to have a right good look at itself!

  22. Your havin' a laff on

P67, I have to say I take issue with the statement claiming this will be our biggest spend in 14 years!!!

The facts just don’t back it up (see below)

    Ins:

    Ciftci – £1.5M

    Boyata – £1.5M

    Janko – Compensation (say £200K)

    Allan – £275K

    Bailly – Undisclosed (say £250K)

Blackett – Loan (£3M option – no spend until next year – maybe)

Simunovic (not a done deal) – likely fee £4M (plus add ons when sold)

Christie (not a done deal) – likely fee £750K (loaned back to ICT)

A N Other Striker – ????? unlikely to be any more than £1M – more likely to be a season loan

Total spend circa. £9.225M (assuming purchases of Simunovic, Christie & Striker happen)

    Outs:

    Matthews – £2M

    Pukki – Undisclosed (say £250K)

    Irvine – Compensation (say £100K)

    Balde – Free???

    Chalmers – Undisclosed (say £100K)

McGeogh – Free??? (top up of Allan fee??)

Van Dijk (not a done deal) – £11.5K

Possibly also Johansen, Boerrigter, Stokes, Scepovic

Total receivable: £13.95M (not including potential sales of Johansen, Boerrigter, Stokes, Scepovic)

    Net receivable £4.725M

I think we can safely assume that this will be the 5th or 6th season in a row where the club have made money during the transfer window for the entire season (if you look at summer and winter transfer windows as being 1 season). My gut feeling is we’d have to go back to Neil Lennon’s first transfer window when we sold McGeady and replaced him with about 11 players to find a season where we spent more on transfers than we brought in.

For the record I am not necessarily against the current signing policy, merely pointing out the inaccuracy of the reporting.

The flaw in our signing policy is not having the ambition to spend significant money on an experienced player of real quality if the opportunity becomes available. There has to be flexibility within the boardroom to deviate slightly from any plan where the need arises. The Boards’ procrastination and inflexibility during the current transfer window has resulted in another failed attempt to reach the UCL resulting in the banner displayed at the game on Saturday. Whilst I understand the sentiments I do not necessarily agree with the way in which it was demonstrated. Stay positive bhoys and ghirls. It’s the only way to achieve success.

With any luck the Club has now learned its lesson and we can build now for a run at next seasons UCL, starting with decent perfomances on the UEL.

    COYBIG

  23. I am not lurking anymore.

Add to your list Izzy, Jamsie and Chico who also receive lots of personal abuse.

  24. Go tell the Spartim on

Does Paul67 not mean the biggest spend on the one player since John Hartson and not the biggest net spend in 14 years.

Is super Joe Hanson the official CQN whipping bhoy, not from me, Mulgrew should get it

  25. If I was RD…seeing as it was the wee buzzbomb’s birthday.

I would sit the players down…and show them Bobby Lennox and the rest of the Lions at their best.

    They were real players.

Celtic players should be busting a gut for the club and the fans….that’s what we expect.

We don’t need superstars….we need a Celtic mentality drummed into the players.

We just want a good team.

A Celtic team who fear nobody.

    HH

  26. no player is above criticism but if we must get tore in – then I don’t think we should start with SJ or Izzy – both have given all that they have most of the time.

  27. Lawwell has done well to get £11.5 m for our best player – he would have done better if he had got £15m without sacrificing VVD…he would have done even better to have got the (very attainable)£15m and then sold VVD….

Net result – nother fail….lets not be fooled…again
