Blatter Ad hominem, Hampden, Thompson

819

Rumours circulated last week that is was Sepp Blatter who leaked the million or so emails to The Sunday Times, allowing them to uncover previously hidden payments between Fifa delegates at the time of the Qatar 2022 vote.  That looks fanciful in the face of Blatters tub-thumping, that criticism of the voting process is motivated by racism.

The motivation behind The Sunday Times is irrelevant, Fifa is either corrupt or not.  Blatter is indulging in the ancient art of Ad hominem, rejecting a claim not on its own merits, but on an irrelevant facet of the person making the claim.  Sony, Adidas and others have led the way is asking for proper oversight of Fifa to protect their brands being damaged by association.  This is all very well but by postponing any disclosure until after the forthcoming World Cup, Fifa have years to allow sponsor angst to dissipate.  Expect nothing to change.

What a fascinating wee story that the SFA are considering leaving Hampden to Queens Park to maintain and ‘fill’ with a few hundred spectators each game.  If this is a bargaining position to force Queens into cutting a generous deal, fair enough.

In the event the SFA decide to move away from Hampden, it’s worth keeping an eye on the stadium.  Those who appear intent on driving Newco Rangers into liquidation could do with a spare stadium in Glasgow, just in case the current owners of Ibrox do not succumb to manipulation.

On the subject of that lot, Dundee United’s Stephen Thompson’s playing a blinder. Not only is he cherry-picking their youth talent but he’s also raised the inconvenient fact – Newco Rangers is a two year old football club. Follow the money on this one.

Well done to BBC Alba and Alex O’Henley for the outstanding Jock Stein documentary last night.  It’s difficult to add much to the Stein story after all these years but they managed to do so. The level of detail contained therein was remarkable, and it was nothing short of astonishing that we heard first-hand testimony on Jock playing for Blantyre Vics.

If you’re short of a Father’s Day gift, Tommy Gemmell, Bertie Auld and John Hughes will be signing copies of their books at the Celtic Store in Argyle St from 1pm until 4pm on Saturday.  Three Lions, one venue, bring your camera.

It’s also an enormous privilege to announce that after we hosted a live chat session with Willie Wallace last year and Tommy Gemmell last month, Bertie Auld will be live on CQN from 1pm this Friday.  Bertie is the strong silent type, so you’ll need to prepare a few questions to bring him out of his shell.

Visit the CQN Bookstore to get Tommy Gemmell to sign your personal copy of his tome, All the Best, freshly signed by the man himself this morning.

    You are correct.. Strachan wasn’t complaining about the decision, he was complaining about being crap but he seemed to have some pride (if that is the correct word) that he was involved in what was to be JS’s last football decision and that it turned out to be a right good decision too.

    Sorry, but you seem to have misread what I said.

    Perhaps you should read it again.

    The statue at Westminster was erected because Cromwell was regarded as having played an important role in the development of Parliamentary democracy, and in spite of, not because of, his genocidal campaigns against his opponents.

  4. Im sure that if the SFA were to desert Hampden and leave it to sevco that Celtic would have something to say about that, or would they?

    Celtic should send out copies of the BBC ALBA Jock Stein documentary to all our lapsed season ticket holders. I often question myself when it comes renewing due to corrupt nature of our football league structure and opponents (or future opponents) but last night’s programme renewed my belief in being a Celtic supporter.

    If there was a 10 year season ticket I would buy it today (payable by instalments)

  8. The Scottish FA will examine a proposal to end its lease on Hampden Park in 2020 and use other stadia.

    I think there’s a lot of people here assuming Sevco will still be on the go by 2020. I’m sure they will be, in some form. Hopefully not “big” enough of a club to fill Hampden in 6 years time though.

    There were many who opposed the monarchy in the 17th century who were not so bloodthirsty and bigoted as Cromwell.

    By your reckoning Robiespierre and Stalin would be classed as “progressive”.

    Sure, the Tories in Glasgow called themselves Progressives up until the early 1970s.

  17. Queens Park would be better off doing a deal with a club that is more likely to pay their rent. Not a club with a known rap sheet for not paying debt’s.

  18. ernie lynch

    Cromwell secured power for the emerging business class and the English “squirearchy” who thereafter funded the push for empire in the 18th century. That’s why there is a statue of him in Parliament Square. Nothing to do with democracy.

    I know why the statue is there.

    The mere fact that the sheer scale of barbarity attributted to him is totally disregarded is the point.

    That Britain finds it becoming to honour such a monster speaks volumes.

    Or maybe his victims didnt really matter

    Is there any particular reason why you are giving us your opinion on the matter now rather than when the question was first asked?

    In any event the movement from a feudal economy to a capitalist economy would be regarded by most people as progressive.

    And the fact that the start of the move towards parliamentary democracy coincided with the rise of capitalism is of course entirely coincidental.

  25. Wee Fergus is back in a few weeks and I’m sure he may have a word or two to say about Hampden and what should have happened rather than tarting up a stadium that needed bulldozed and rebuilt from scratch.

    Celtic starting rebuilding Paradise in 1995 and the job is still not finished. The inside may be done but work is still ungoing turning Paradise into a truly modern top class facility inside and out. It is embarrassing to drive past our excellent ground to go to Hampden for a cup final or international match and the SFA know it. Wee fergus told them as much back in the 90’s but then they never did listen did they?

    The erection of the statue was controversial at the time and has remained so. There have been campaigns (including Parliamentary motions) to have it removed.

    By the way I was answering a question as to why it was there, not whether it should be there.

  27. Mr Cameron said: “I would say freedom, tolerance, respect for the rule of law, belief in personal and social responsibility and respect for British institutions – those are the sorts of things that I would hope would be inculcated into the curriculum in any school in Britain”

    British values:

    * Freedom – imprisoning without trial. Trials held in secret;

    * Tolerance – allowing the army to perpetrate crimes in whatever country they enter. Ireland, Iraq, Afghanistan;

    * Law – flipping properties to maximise MP expenses. To not see this as fraud;

    * Responsibility – cutting benefits. Supporting bankers. Cutting higher rate tax;

    * Respect – for corrupt police, newspapers, politicians, clergy. No respect for teachers, nurses, labourers.

    He’s got to be having a laugh. I suppose he and his cronies learned their British values at Eton.

    I didn’t realise there was an approved timescale within which someone is allowed to make a post or offer an opinion. I just find it a bit strange that you would deem a butcher like Cromwell to be progressive, especially considering his attitude to the Irish people. The hordes regard him as a hero because they share that attitude to the Catholic Irish.

    You’re a brave man coming on here calling him progressive.

  31. !!Bada Bing!! on

    livibhoy- i wonder how much “advice” the SFA took from SDM in the Hampden re-furb? I wonder where the steel products came from?

  32. The Hampden lease doesn’t expire until 2020 so in terms of the SFA doing anything to help them via use of stadia it will be far too late.

    I reckon you are explaining why the statue is there,and others are asking,erm,why the statue is there.

    It’s a difficult one,we all know his history of despotism. But he was instrumental in installing parliamentary power over the monarchy.

    That’s not to excuse it,by the way. But it does go some way to understanding why he is still held in high regard.

    A bit like saying Mussolini and Hitler got the trains running on time,though.
